As far as i know that would be an accreditation fail. There are quite a few ScotRail tickets not available as eTickets
As far as I know we paid - 5 years ago - for hundreds of eticket readers on Scottish gatelines on the proviso that they would introduce etickets. Which they haven’t done. Though they did introduce m-tickets which only they can sell. Should we remove the barcode scanners?

Do the barcode scanners at ScotRail stations not accept e-tickets?

I know it’s a Network Rail station but was told by a ScotRail staff member the gates for platforms 6, 7 11 and 12 at Edinburgh Waverley are “ScotRail managed” and I have successfully scanned E-tickets issued by LNER at said gates.

Most wouldn't believe it but ScotRail are a larger blocker for us retiring CCST than TfL are

Bit like that machine at GLC that printed E-Tickets onto paper, then?
Using mTicket data ? yeah funny that.

As I understand it, a barcode reader on a gate or in a ticket inspector's hand is simply looking for a QR code, and doesn't care whether it is an m-ticket or an e-ticket or a paper printout. Is that wrong? And what is CCST?

CCST is credit card size ticket - an orange card ticket.

All rail tickets use Aztec barcodes. QR codes are not used.

Scanning is agnostic of fulfilment type or medium.

It feels like there are some people talking at cross-purposes here.

I think the following are true:
  • ScotRail mostly sell their digital tickets as mTickets. I don't think the average user could tell you the difference between an mTicket and an eTicket - as far as I can tell, an mTicket can only be used from within the ScotRail app, and requires activation before travel, whereas an eTicket can be issued as a PDF, printed, or added to a digital wallet of your choice. (According to this page, ScotRail will now sell Advance fares as eTickets. It also refers to the code on a ticket as a "QR code", which isn't helping anyone.)
  • Other retailers (Trainsplit and LNER being examples) will sell ScotRail tickets as eTickets if they can, but not all flows are eTicketable.
  • Many other retailers will default to CCSTs for any ScotRail journey, even if it is possible to issue it as an eTicket.
what I don't know is if the list of fares that can be issued on mTicket is the same as the list of fares that can be issued on eTicket.

Though you can still use the Tap & Pay app those those stations as they are within the zone, thus able to get a barcode ticket.

Other examples are rail & sail tickets, such as those through to Rothesay. At the ferry port part of the ticket is surrendered to be replaced with a ferry specific one which also has a barcode on it. Which raises the question, why can't Calmac do the same as the bus operators (Plusbus) and support the reading of the rail barcodes?

I didn't realise how long the issues had been going on. I don't use the app but I was on a train today where the ticket collector had to give up as her machine was not working.

But the passengers got talking, and I got the impression that if you had a flexipass then the app was not working and they were getting free travel; one of them said Scotrail had told them there were few complaints when they asked about it.

It does seem ScotRail keep downplaying the impact of these problems, both on launch day and even in recent times.

I have to ask, what are Strange Avocet and Miura PED?
A PED is a PIN Entry Device - basically a card machine for taking payments, though realistically most people tap contactless rather than inserting a card and tapping in their PIN now.

A lot of the recent posts seem off-topic. Is the ScotRail app now functioning perfectly?
