I'm confused - E19 can't just be a depot run can it? The frequency it currently runs at suggests the buses constantly need to get back to base? I thought if it was depot runs then it would be like E12 which is sporadic in that it is funny times, big gaps in service and is no intermediate stops.

Maybe something to do with charging the coaches?

I’ve just completed my first linked-up journeys on the ember network, changing at Dundee and also Inverness and it all worked flawlessly so all credit to them. What has raised my curiosity, is that as with the single point to point journeys - a combined journey has a single QR code and displays the start and final destination code (eg Glasgow > Thurso). SaltireNEC cards are scanned on entry and the QR code read. What I found confusing was at the changeover, the QR code is scanned again, BUT the driver is advised to scan the NEC (again!}

Is this Double-dipping? Glasgow-Inverness and Inverness to Thurso would be a higher fare, when the first scan covered the full journey. It was the same on the return.

Perhaps there will be more services for the E19 to feed into at Edinburgh Airport.

It will be a 20 minute service on the E20 which vehicles start at Livingston as an E19 to Airport then to Glasgow as an E20 . It's simply for staffing, drivers hours and charging. Vehicles may also operate onwards from Glasgow as E3/5/8/16s

Apart from charging it would be far simpler to pull in at Deer Park and do this rather than run a 24/7 20min service to the airport that is hardly used.

Fresh air express, just a balls up tbh starting it nearly 3 months before the E20

I tried the E19 today. Decided to have a walk in the farmland around the airport, so Livingston to Ingliston and Ratho Station to Livingston. At £4.90 it's about a third cheaper than walking up to the X18 which would have been the alternative.

Easy to book, arrived 7 minutes early with 4 people on. 2 joined opportunistically in Broxburn and couldn't understand the booking process, nor that you can't easily change your mind about where you'd like to get off. It's so different to the other buses around here I don't understand why they don't have a leaflet on board to hand out to people that explains it. Arrived at Ingliston 11 mins early. Return was on time but held on a couple of minutes at Ratho until after the 10 minute window in Broxburn and went straight down the M8. All good and I was the only person on apart from the driver.

Nice coaches, very easy to book, friendly drivers, good experience and I'd do it again. I usually drive to Ingliston and it's making me reconsider that.

Couple of comments.

1. A stop at Deer Park inbound would help as neither Fastlink has both an open north and south stop due to long term roadworks. I don't know what you can do about the Ladywell northbound being closed.

2. On the airport bound service they are laying over up to 10+ mins in the stops on the A8 - I suspect when they don't have passengers. I was walking back from Newbridge to Ratho and one was stood in Lochend for the best part of 15 mins. Other service buses were blocking the exit from Lochend Road when pulling in behind it. The timetable is pretty loose outwith the peaks and that's assuming they follow the full route: they can easily gain 10 mins if they don't. If two service buses had arrived together at Lochend they would have blocked the entrance to Lochend Road as well. They need to tighten this up.

3. I wonder about the pre-booking model for this route. There are now a few social media ads, but nothing in the bus stops, no leaflets with the mail - it's not a serious effort at marketing a bus service. As well as the airport it's a very good link from Livingston to Broxburn and the Calders, and much faster than Lothian Country. It connects with the tram at Ingliston and should have the potential to get some folk off the train too. If they kept it limited stop but otherwise pulled in for people waiting I wonder if it could do a lot better.

I asked the driver if he would have waited for me at the Fastlink in Livingston. He assured me he would and told me they are instructed to wait until a minute after departure for any pre-booked passengers.

I wondered if the E19 skips sections of route if no passengers are booked. I took the E19 once and it took the full route and picked up some passengers in East Calder who never pre booked.

Its Ember, they are more likely to have a QR code than a printed leaflet. I would like them to publish a PDF timetable or something, same goes for Flixbus.

I was recently in Dingwall and booked ember to Inverness. At the stop there was timetable fixed that listed all departing services and at the bottom was ember, and beside each time was a code that when checked revealed the stop required pre-booking. Five minutes before arrival, someone else joined me and we waited. On its arrival (4 minutes late) I was scanned by the driver and took my seat. The other guy wanted to purchase a ticket to Inverness. The driver did this (£2.00) then went on to explain if I hadn’t booked he would not have stopped, even if hailed. Clearly the bus could have gone no other way, but at Cumbernauld, they will not go via the Town Centre stop if nobody booked, staying on the M80 instead.

On E19. I’m not saying it will or won’t be a success. But do remember back when Lothian Country first came on the scene many, including myself, were talking of them running empty. And look where we are now. Not saying Ember will be the new LCB, but there can be a build it and they will come eventually. From what I’ve seen, Ember seem a bit more willing to put a route into an area and actually give it time to build custom. Most of the coaches I’ve seen in the last few days have had 1 or 2 on now, not exactly busy but considering it’s had absolutely no promotion.

I caught an early afternoon service on the E19 a little over a week ago.
There were 2 on, who got off at Livingston Bus Terminal. I boarded for Ingliston and was the only one on board until an older lady ran up just before we left and boarded for Broxburn Post Office, tapping her NEC card.

When she got off she was asking about the service - this seemed to be the first time she'd used it. The driver told her she was fine to board where she had without booking, but they wouldn't stop for people if no booking had been made from other stops.

We stopped short of Ingliston as we were running rather early.

I was then dropped on the main road outside Ingliston which threw me a little as I've never been there before and caused me to be a tram later than I could have been. I wonder if the driver thought I was being cheap so dropped me at a handier place for walking up to the airport. As I walked to the Park and Ride an Ember in the other direction was pulling in at the correct stop.

Weirdly that's how the stops are booked for the E19. Eastfield Road towards the airport and the stop inside the park and ride on the way out. For sure a good few mins walk from the road to the tram stop.

The driver offered to run me into the park and ride but that would have been further away from where I was headed.

The E1 goes into the park and ride in both directions but the other airport Ember services miss it completely.

I got the E19 on it’s first day & my driver said to me that the buses were too long to be able to serve the northbound stop at the park & ride before the airport due to the location of the traffic island making it too hard for the GTe14s to turn out without minor damage to the coaches.

Nonsense, the bus can easily get in there. Clearly one of the newer drivers straight from service work.

A normal vehicle can serve that stop and with the GTe14s rear steering it will be even easier

Every Ember I've ever been on at Ingliston P&R - whether boarding, alighting or just passing through - uses the same stop (the one opposite the P&R building), so I'm not sure what the driver was talking about.

The E19 seems to be the only Ember route which calls at the stop directly outside the P&R building.

The E19 towards the airport serves the stop in Eastfield Road, the reverse journey stops at the P&R. The E1 can be booked to stop at the P&R on the airport variant in both directions.

Will E20 replace E19? Im guessing once it goes to Livingston it will duplicate the E19

Ember are about to opened it's Kirkcaldy depot and are looking for drivers at this moment of time. Hopefully we will see a Fife - Tayside route soon.

They've put up an advert on their Facebook looking for drivers on Skye this afternoon. Looking to compete with the 917 to Inverness? Stagecoach will struggle if they keep running the piles of scrap metal they normally do on that run.

They are paying more there and Oban so they must anticipate it being more difficult to recruit there.

Can't speak for Oban but it is very difficult to recruit on Skye for almost anything.

Oban has been short staffed since the start.

They had Glasgow, Inverness and Aberdeen drivers in hotels there 2 weeks ago working from Oban to cover duties.

The worst case is Stagecoach/Citylink get pushed out and leaves Ember. Ember operate for a couple of years but retract operations, leaves no service. Very unlikley.

Very interesting. Looks like we may be about to see the end of Stagecoach's dominance over the Fife express coach market. I wonder if Ember will have a go at Glasgow-Dunfermline-Kirkcaldy-Dundee or Edinburgh-Kirkcaldy-Leven-St Andrews.

The quality of the buses on that Stagecoach route are not great. I recall struggling to fit in the seats, I'm not particularly tall or that big!

Good: The current network is disgrace, needs a good kick up the backside. If you look at the press release they wanted to have Fife to Tayside route first.
