But what will it be like getting home again at say 1700-1800, by which time the extreme heat will really have taken effect?
The GWML from Slough - Paddington is currently Relief lines only. Mains appear shut.
Can’t confirm if this is heat related but I expected the weather is playing a part.
Relief lines are very congested with trains almost signal to signal. Lizzie line, GW and freight all battling to get down the 2 track bottleneck.

There's also a segment of society who think that working from home is the same as taking a day off and deeply unproductive. Or they're just jealous of something they don't understand.
Northern have cancelled 4 Skipton - Leeds services today, allegedly due to the weather. This includes both the 0544 (first service) and 0744 (same unit), neither of which can be described as running through the peak of the heat. Does make me wonder if this is more about train faults (short forms are rife with 331s) or crew shortages rather than heat. Cancelling the first service feels like poor form.
They've also cancelled the 1626 Leeds - Skipton, so let's hope they find a 6 car for the 1656, otherwise there will be a lot of very hot passenger crammed on a 3 car.

They've cancelled unit diagram circuits from the start to the end of the day - by far the most efficient thing to do rather than have a sudden burst of additional empty stock moves mid morning when the infrastructure might start to face issues.
Looks like Southeastern are having a pretty rough time of it with a brief, but disruptive blanket emergency speed restriction because of some rather heavy rain on dry ground.

I work in HE part of the time and tomorrow's Departmental meeting has been cancelled and is now remote. I suppose, travelling in only exacerbates Climate issues and pollution. But more importantly, there are bound to be issues later today onwards to Thursday.
That is part of the pre-agreed emergency timetable for LNR on the WCML south.
Euston - New St hourly
Euston - Crewe hourly
Euston - Tring cancelled
Euston - MKC run as all stops (no additional peak time trains)
Also, New St - Liverpool will revert to 1tph 8 car double sets.
Local LNR services remain as booked.
WMT services will be heavily reduced;
Cross city 2tph
Camo Hill hourly
Wolves - Walsall hourly
Rugeley TV terminate short at Hednesford

Never mind working from home, I'd rather work from my air-conditioned train than my stuffy home or office!
My train is significantly busier this morning than usual, which could either be people taking a slightly later commute due to poor sleep last night, or people working in the office today in lieu of Wednesday and Thursday.

Various "full and standing" messages appearing on Chiltern JourneyCheck. Can see the allocations on RTT keep wildly fluctuating so someone behind the scenes must be trying to get things sensibly allocated.

Not sure if this has been mentioned, but Avanti have reduced Birmingham, Manchester & Liverpool services to 1tph today.

807s all day except one 805. Not stopping at South Parkway, so yes, it does seem odd not to use 11 car Pendolinos!

The diagrams that are running appear to be the faster Pendolino one that stops at Tamworth, not the slower 807 one that stops at Crewe and MKC.

It's definitely time to start painting trains white. A GBR livery that doesn't have a light colour on the roof and tops of bodysides would be incredibly short-sighted.
Let's hope some alternative has been arranged for those in Rugeley Town to get to Trent Valley or Hednesford. I suspect not, of course.

Lots of advice to not travel Tomorrow/Thursday and especially from LNER to travel Friday instead yet looking at ventusky.com Friday is now set to be the hottest day for most of the LNER route

it is relatively recently that models have suggested the heat will continue at this level on Friday, once confidence firms up, advice will be updated no doubt

The weather forecast is moving pretty rapidly. I suspect because of overnight shenanigans (the most intense storm I've experienced over London) things aren't looking quite as crazy now - maybe they weren't expecting the storm to suppress temperatures quite as much. As others have said it seems the heat has pushed back into Friday too, which was forecast "only" at 30 degrees until this morning.
Which begs the question - can Met Office withdraw a warning, and what impact does that have on the rail industry?
I'm in the office two days out of four this week because I was attracted by my firm's apparent belief that AC is only effective if it means you need a jacket. I'll be at home tomorrow and Friday though, and even with the heat I'll be far more productive than I am when I'm wasting 2 hours getting in and out.

As long as people do work and they and their employer are both in agreement with it, what's the problem? It's particularly sensible when travel may be fraught, though I must admit some office aircon would be nice today!

I have noticed that Realtimetrains now include the aircon symbol next to the service on the full list; rather than have it as part of the train diagram. Very useful! That's as long as the A/C is working!

My Department is already planning to close offices that are in the red warning zones, asking people where they can to work from home. And for Amber areas the advise is should offices become too hot, local decisions can be made to close and those able to work from home can do so. Personally I'm in an Amber zone, with temps forecast up to 38C by Thursday, so I've already decided to WFH Wednesday & Thursday (although Wednesday was almost certainly going to happen as England play tonight!). But if it means a proportion less people commuting, that will make it easier for those who have to travel in to work.
Should be 2x Manchester, 1 via Crewe, 1 via Stoke.

Wouldn't it be great if the data sent by some rolling stock (e.g. class 700s) that reports to control how many people are in each coach, the temperature of each carriage, and which toilets are working or not, was able to be shared with services like RTT!
I hope the weather we've had over the last few years is making more people realise that instead of spending £50-60 on a semi-decent fan (i.e. not a £10 Argos fan that breaks in a fortnight), it is now absolutely worth investing £200-250 in a portable air conditioner that can cool you at night, or be in your home office. They should easily last 10 years or more, so the total cost is minimal.
YES there's a high usage cost depending on your electricity tariff but even if you're paying 25p an hour to run it (based on most systems using around 1kW in cooling mode) but when it's this hot, you'll be happy to pay.
We currently have three portable units, but the next step (sometime in the autumn hopefully) is getting an air to air heat pump and installing five units around the house to heat and cool. These are substantially cheaper to run (and quieter) and I am convinced that future homes should be coming with heating and cooling, especially shoebox flats that can get dangerously hot.

Judging by the displays on rail stations, I'm not sure that's all that accurate - and in any case how do they know? I suppose they collect data from those using phones like they do for if a pub's busy or not on google maps? But even so, would be really helpful if you knew in advance which were the quietest carriages on an app! I suppose it's possible to give the temperature inside a carriage, wouldn't the aircon work on a smart signal?
A bit off topic but on that theme, would be nice to know when a TPE is split, which part the trolly's in!
I'm in the same quandary as others with booked travel on Thurs. In my case it is Leeds to Kings Cross, the Eurostar to Paris, and a sleeper from Austerlitz to Toulouse. Decision-making on a go/no go is proving difficult because of vague and conflicting information. LNER say don't travel, but as yet it is unclear which trains may be running, and today's forecast sees London in mid 30s rather than 40C. Eurostar seem to have cancelled a few services, but most are scheduled as OK (for now). Finding out about likely SNCF services is less easy. My risk assessment says worst case scenario is getting to Paris in 40C heat and then getting stranded if the sleeper is cancelled, and having to find a space in a park to kip in. Ultimately the gamble is mine to make, but any further info or advice is welcome.
