We saved a train TV on Quest/ HBO Max episode 6 briefly shows CDL being fitted to a mark 1 carriage in Bo'ness railway, could this be for the Jacobite?
No, that's for the Scottish Railway Preservation Society (SRPS) fleet.

SRPS use them on their mainline charters/tours.

The RailAdvent railtours page shows a preliminary ECS movement from Carnforth to Tom Na Faire depot.

I know this doesn't guarantee anything... but...
And what's left for west coast railway and Railway touring Co tours In England and Wales loco roster wise if the Jacobite season is going ahead and 44871 and 45407 do go to the west highland line tom na faire depot, There is only 34028 Eddystone W.C. 34067 Tangmere B.B. and 35028 Clan Line available for the M.K. 2 carriage sets M.N. unless W.C.R. have miraculously turned out a few rakes of C.D.L. fitted M.K. 1 carriages oven ready and O.R.R. approved for 45699 galatea and 44932 to heave.?

I agree, I don’t know how they would manage if both locos are going up. I think they could manage with 2 rakes of mk1’s, 1 on the Jacobite and 1 for RTC. RTC could operate the MK1s with 45699, 44932 & 46115 and then a rake of MK2s with 34028 & 34067. I mean they could beg for the A1SLT to help again, I don’t know how badly that bridge was burnt.

So, I'm a bit new to all this, and this sounds interesting. What exactly happened?

That's only pure speculation i stated previously when I say about the M.K.1 carriage situation as the M.K.1,S are supposedly been fitted with C.D.L. although no one knows this is true for certain which if west coast railways are fitting C.D.L. they haven't announced a date as to when the 1st rake of M.K. 1 carriages would be ready as loco overhauls and and all rolling stock work is kept very quiet at the discretion of W.C.R. fitters at 10A.

Yes I know, I am only speculating, I’m saying I think they would be able to cope with the Jacobite and RTC but only if they have 2 rakes of MK1s. I agree with you that they would struggle with only 1 and we have no idea how far through (if any progress) the MK1s are.

The best you can hope for will be 1 rake of mixed large window mk2's and Whatever MK1s have been CDL fitted, I can't see how in just a few months, there will be more than a handful of coaches done,

Nothing wrong with that - don't forget it's only relatively recently that there's been a second service, and in today's economic climate is there the demand? The problem I see is that the stock is rotated during the season for maintenance, so maybe WCR has got the exemption?

As posted in the Scotland Travel Group Facebook page:

Update on the Jacobite Express

West Coast Railways have sent an email to the travel trade saying the train will start running on Monday 1st June.

Initially, it will only be for tour companies with group bookings but they will also be offering on the day ticket sales. They don't yet have a confirmed date for online bookings opening.

This is a huge surprise as we didn't expect the safety upgrades to be completed quickly.

These are the timings from the rail industry portal.

So, it’s good to see it’ll finally be back from Monday. We’ll have to see what stock is used tomorrow.

Can anyone tell me how long would it typically take for CDL to be installed on a Mark 1 Coach, please? This assumes that there are no problems in principle with the work and doesn't include any "non-railway" objections (such as we've seen over the past few years) to it.

Forgive me if this is a silly question, but I always ask questions about things when I don't know the answer.

Thanks.

If only WCR had been warned several years ago of the necessity of carrying out this work.....

I take it there is nothing from the ORR? Are WCR working to an assumed approval date or an actual approval?

No - under the Rail and Other Guided Transport Systems (Safety) Regulations 2006 there is no concept of an external body inspecting or authorising modifications in this way. Provided that the (mark 1) coaching stock is covered by the relevant Regulation 4 exemption of the Railway Safety Regulations 1999 (which is crashworthiness related) and the operation, fitment and maintenance of such a system is suitably covered in the railway operator’s Safety Management System it can return to use if central door locking is fitted.

ORR approval is only required if another Regulation 5 exemption is to be issued, in which case as per other operators a time-bound, deliverable plan for fitment is essentially the only thing required to satisfy this.

ROGS essentially put the onus for certification and conformity on the operator, removing the previous practice of an HMRI inspector coming round and signing it off. The ORR could still carry out spot checks to see both paperwork and operation, but it isn’t a (legal) requirement to entry to service.

The ORR certainly didn’t give approval for last year’s hybrid operation of CDL mark 2 and non-CDL mark 1s.

All that said, if you’ve been in the spotlight of the regulator previously and had a very well publicised battle to avoid fitting CDL, it would probably be in your interest to invite the regulator round for a tea and a walk about…

It should be noted that with the exception of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway there are no longer any active Regulation 5 exemptions.

Presumably the design (if different to the ones used by LSL or Vintage Trains) would need approving by an "Independant Competent Person"

It is mostly Mark 2a with cdl fitted
The Jacobite is advertised as a steam train, so to most tourists MK2 carriages will be OK, but not to some steam enthusiasts and Harry Potter fans who expect MK1 carriages, even if not advertised (might attract copyright fees from Warner Bros if Harry Potter is mentioned).
Could be WCR are still converting some MK1 carriages now they are back from the 'Polar Express" trains.

Mark 2a are the older style and are more like a mark 1 than an air-con mark 2.
