Metrocar updates and withdrawals - Tyne & Wear Metro

Thus far, we have two Metrocar sets out today.

  • T111 (Green) - 4024 + 4035
  • T136 (Yellow) - 4068 + 4029

555021 (on T126) and 555020 (on T132) have both been withdrawn from service (the latter due to a pantograph issue, not sure what was wrong with 021), so it's entirely possible that Metrocars might be drafted in later to replace those trains. The 555s have definitely had reliability issues recently.

4009+4050 replacing the 555 on T132, and 4041+4081 are out on T108 as well, so four sets out again today.

555020 is back, this time on T126. I’m not sure how long it’ll be before it’s caped again. 555020 seems to be the most unreliable member of the new fleet atm.

Today's Metrocars (24/04/2026):
  • T105 (Green) - 4009 + 4050
  • T107 (Green) - 4035 + 4024
  • T128 (Yellow) - 4081 + 4041
4068 and 4029 were briefly on T134 (Yellow) but have been pulled and replaced with 555014.

Just two sets out today, 4009/50 on T103 and 4041/81 on T108.

A 35th Class 555 (555033) entered service yesterday evening.

Metrocar update - 27th April 2026

  • T110 (Green) - 4009 + 4050
  • T130 (Yellow) started as 4029 + 4078, but these moved to T129 later on in the day, and 555031 took their place on T130
  • T133 (Yellow) - 4081 + 4041

Just those three pairs out today. Per a reliable source, 4029 and 4050 both failed, hence the unusual pairings (4009 has been paired with 4050 for a fairly long time).

T135 (Yellow) was meant to be Metrocars, but they failed at Gosforth Depot and 555008 was drafted in to replace them.

I am guessing that 4065 is withdrawn? Hasn't been out since 14 March. I was on it shortly before that and it was in a right state.

Compared to others that left for scrap yes, and one that is still here that should of gone well before now

Any sign of Nexus announcing when they'll be withdrawn from service permanently? Can't be that far away at this point when we seem to be regularly down to only one or two sets each day in action? Are there are any out regularly on a Sunday or that now entirely booked to be 555s?

I think the remaining ones will simply be withdrawn as they need money spending on them, that's happened with a few recently. There are just about enough 555s in revenue use now to withdraw the Metrocars, but the operational phrase there is "just about", so I expect the end not to happen until there are a few more on line. A guess would be end of June/start of July, but it is just a guess.

There are rarely any out on a Sunday now, although after a number of blank Sundays there was one set last week and one the week before.

On paper everything is booked 555 now with old sets just standing in as required - just to add to the mystique of it all!

Sorry for the lack of updates to the fleet list as I’ve been very busy lately. I am sorting it out now.

Also of note is that GCS Johnson, who had been removing the Metrocars for scrap, have collapsed into administration. As such a new haulage firm needs to be selected so it’s unclear now what timescale we’re looking at for the remaining disposals or if they’ll possibly work slightly differently from the previous disposals.

T112 is 4009+4078, replaced a failed 555 earlier.
