I hope the recent posts are not altogether serious, they are starting to frighten me a little.

@najaB @Bantamzen do you honestly think we are heading towards some terrible outcome thanks to lunatic fundamentalist Christians?

Sorry to ask but those posts have spooked me.
I wish I wasn't being serious but there are people in and closely associated with the current US administration who believe that they have a religious duty to initiate the process that will lead to Armageddon.

For example. this was reported a few pages back:
American service members across every branch of the military have been told by commanders that the US-Israeli war on Iran is intended to induce the biblical end times, or Armageddon, according to complaints lodged with a US watchdog.

“This morning our commander opened up the combat readiness status briefing by urging us to not be ‘afraid’ as to what is happening with our combat operations in Iran right now,” a non-commissioned officer said in an emailed complaint lodged with the Military Religious Freedom Foundation (MRFF).

“He urged us to tell our troops that this was ‘all part of God's divine plan’ and he specifically referenced numerous citations out of the Book of Revelation referring to Armageddon and the imminent return of Jesus Christ.”

This was an official briefing that has been approved to send to the troops invoking the "end times".

So what do others on here think about this?

Do we think American religious fanatics want to end the world and this is the idea of this war?

Worth remembering that even if the US left NATO, the combined miltary budgets of the remaining NATO members would still be greater than those of China and Russia combined, still an extremely potent defensive alliance.

Hence why I wouldn't be so quick to call them a paper tiger. They might not be as technologically advanced as the US but European NATO still has good military equipment along with the capabilities to actually use it, and France and the UK both have a nuclear arsenal along with blue-water navies with a global reach (albeit more limited than the US Navy).

This does give it an edge over Russia who have combat experience but outdated equipment, and China who have new equipment but aren't battle-tested. Nevertheless a big draw of the alliance was being under the security umbrella of the US, especially for the former Soviet bloc states. I think in time though a united European force could potentially be on par if the world ends up becoming more insular.

For clarity, I don't think this is the reason for the war, but there will definitely be some of that bent cheering it on.

No. This war against Iran is mainly an Israeli thing. But Israeli has it's hands around the neck of U.S. politics and Trump doesn’t like Iran, so...

Plus, Trump was pleased with the operation in Venezuela and having success is now "loving" having the power to use the military for his own use. Remember, he never asked or consulted with Congress or any ally other than Israeli.

Although Trump has now said many times that he doesn’t thing he's going to heaven, he does not strike me as being very religious, let alone deeply Christian. Trumps religion is money and power.

I don't know about the people behind (trying to control) him.

In the future, I would say that an alliance of NATO countries (not including the U.S.A.), some other Eurpoean countries and some others (Japan, Australia, New Zealand maybe and maybe others) may become stronger than the U.S.A.'s military. Especially if the U.S.A. gets told to leave all the bases in or controlled by all these countries.

The U.S.A. relies on such bases around the world to project power. This would be a lot harder if they lose all the bases in or controlled by all the countries listed above. Hence, the countries listed above would become more or as powerful as the U.S.A. if they can also increase and improve their military.

This could go even further if other countries decide that relying on the U.S.A. for help with defence no longer serves their interests...

Theoretically they could but I don't see the EU, Anglosphere and Japan all coming together under one super alliance, though I can see an EU collaboration along with the possibility of CANZUK finally coming to fruition. It would be quite practical if the world ends up becoming more insular.

This may seem irrelevant but this really will be the legacy of the Trump Presidency even if the Republicans grew a spine and impeached him tomorrow. He has sullied the US standing on the global stage in a way it's enemies couldn't, and I can only hope the midterms later this year will be the beginning of the end of his rule.

This is why I think Europe as a whole will be wanting to move away and decrease reliance on the US in the long-term. Right now we are hoping to be able to ride out this disaster of a Presidency hoping a rational successor takes the oval office after him, but long-term a relationship can't be at the whim of a few thousand swing voters electing another lunatic. Inevitably I feel like the world will eventually evolve into a more insular society of blocs and spheres of influence.

Is not just the military which are moving away from the US, there's been talk of countries trying to separate their computer systems from US companies.

Rather than trying to throw the US out of NATO, we should be trying to throw Trump out of the US.

With him gone, I suspect reasonably-friendly relations with the US will return.

If it were Russia it might just need a window... preferably a high up one and over water to make cleaning up easier.

Indeed, when the conversation moves to religious extremists most people tend to think of Islamic ones. What a lot of people, especially away from the US fail to realise is that Christian extremists have been on the rise, even gaining more traction than Islamic ones because they've learnt how to actually seize control without firing a shot.

And talking of which, I'm not usually one for the tin foil hat stuff, but I can't help stumble upon the thought that maybe all these "blunders" by Trump as well as the well documented attempt on his life are maybe part of a bigger plot from those behind and to the right of Trump. Make him look like he was saved by god, then have him drive his country into a state of war both internally and externally, bring in the trigger happy Israeli government to go a bit too far, call it "The Will of God", or make him the "Chosen One" or the "Second Coming", then spam those launch codes. It sounds crazy I know, and I'm sure I'm wrong, except I doubt myself on this because everything I see going on with the Trump Circus at The White House seems to be leading to just this. And if you scratch the surface of the cess pool that is social media these days, you'll find plenty of Christian Americans cheering this on. Having not had the latest Rapture happen as many predicted, there's a palpable sense that they want some way of bringing about Armageddon so that they can all be whisked to sit at the side of their god.

I hope I am wrong, because these people are far closer to that end that any terrorist claiming to be fighting for Islam....

It's not hard to see links. For example:

Matthew 24:24 NIVUK
[24] For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect.

Now I'm not saying that Trump is a false prophet and definitely not a false messiah, however the point is that "the elect" (short hand for those chosen by God to be saved - although that's a whole world of debate over free will that we don't have time for here) could follow someone totally unsuitable.

To put the above in context a few verses later it says:

Matthew 24:29-30 NIVUK
[29] ‘Immediately after the distress of those days ‘ “the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from the sky, and the heavenly bodies will be shaken.” [30] ‘Then will appear the sign of the Son of Man in heaven. And then all the peoples of the earth will mourn when they see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven, with power and great glory.

So yes, very much in the context of the end of the world.

It wasn't that long ago that the prevailing thinking in the US was that they'd not be deceived and it was likely that the Anti Christ would be Catholic. However, as with any such arrogance, it's easy to find yourself on the wrong side of history.

As such it's no surprise to find that there are people thinking that the US 'christians" (in name only, and very much not following what the bible says - especially the several places where it says about carrying for the poor, those in prison and those from other countries) are trying to bring about the end of the world.

Especially as a lot of them believe in a pre-millennial rapture (i.e. where the Christians are removed from the earth before the 7 years of tribulation* which heralds in the start of the end of the world) and so they miss all the terrible things which will happen.

Unfortunately, there's no guarantee that is the order of things (even if you believe that it's going to happen) and so hastening the start of such events may not be in their best interests.

* Tribulation, is discribed as having many terrible things happening within it, including the rise of the Antichrist, severe natural disasters, worldwide famine, plagues, and the martyrdom of believers, culminating in the Battle of Armageddon before, at the end of it, the second coming of Jesus Christ. Many of the things described talk about bad things happening to 1/3 of things, such as a battle killing 1/3 of people, death of 1/3 of plants, impact on 1/3 of the sea (and the ships on it) and the poisoning of 1/3 of fresh water (whilst many think Thames Water and the rest of our water companies are bad, even they don't quite manage that!). As I said, not something you'd really want to try and bring about.

These extreme groups, have to be the most un-Christian people ever, and I doubt if Trump is even religious, except where money and power are involved, those seem to be his gods,

As regards Nato, or what replaces it, Ukraine in my view should be afforded the same protections as members, An EU lead bloc, including the likes of Canada, New Zealand, Australia, should have the power to come to the aid of a country that's being invaded, and to be able to put people inside that country to assist in stopping aggression, Its going to be better to fight against Russian expansionism, in Ukraine, than in the Baltics ,

Whilst the Trump regime won't actually come out in support of Russia, it won't exactly be helping, to stop Putin's attempt to re-establish the iron curtain.

Perhaps the most fitting quote from the Bible for this whole sorry affair is John 11:35 - "Jesus Wept"

My opinion is that those who believe in the Rapture are a small minority in the Trump administration and do not hold any decisive positions, but they would still take any opportunity to further their wishes as they believe they are mandated by God to do so. Possibly more dangerous are another small minority of the preppers or survivalist strain who, partly driven by religion and partly by greed, would destroy the world once they have stocked their bunkers: they will cleanse the world of it sins, but as they are good they will save themselves for the good of the world. And these people claim, and probably believe, that extremists of other religions are mad.

If those waging war made their real motives open, they would be overthrown in a revolution in a heartbeat. That's why they have to hijack a religion and claim to be doing its bidding, as it's their best chance of covering up the real motives, which are usually to expand/retain power (the primary motive with Trump and Netanyahu), resources (especially oil), and land (in this case occupying Palestinian territory).

I wouldn't call this "hijacking" so much as the traditional use of religion throughout history. Hijacking involves a certain degree of resistance, whereas in these cases there is a great deal of voluntary participation.

I wouldn't want to be a trump supporter hoping for the rapture, it'll be like a turkey hoping for a nice hot oven, and if there was a rapture where they'll end up will certainly be hot!

Absolutely agree. Wars very rarely are the solution. Especially wars launched "in defence" (and normally with no formal declaration of war and called or described as an "operation" or any other term other than "war") but where the other party had not actually attacked first.

Sorry to ask but those posts have spooked me.
I don't wish to be frightening anyone, and I really hope I'm wrong, but as @najaB rightly points out there is movement from some in the US in this direction. That some senior brass inside the US military were reported to be talking about "God's plan" when communicating details of the planned attacks on Iran is deeply disturbing if true. And sadly some in Trump's administration are definitely what you might consider at least close to if not surpassing what might be considered "extremist" Christians. America is full of "pay for salvation" churches where the minsters will happily tell their followers that the only way to secure your place at God's side when the apocalypse comes is to hand over large sums of money, and of course many within Trump's inner circles will have large sums of money to give. So it's not hard to imagine that some may think that they have bought in on the holy train, and no matter what happens or what they do their souls are guaranteed aa fast-track to heaven.

So I think it's important to understand what some of the motivation, at least for Trump's allies because I don't believe for a second Donny gives two hoots about religion, may be in this ever more aggressive stance the US is taking. That way we, as in the rest of the world, can at least make the decision to give them a little bit of a wide berth. For all I think Starmer is a poor PM, his continued stance to keep us out of the attacks is a wholly sensible one given that the US still hasn't quite settled on a reason for starting this war. Hopefully equally as sensible people at Capitol Hill are at this moment working quietly to find a way to distract the man child away from Iran, and thus scale back this situation and at least step away from the brink of another long, bloody conflict.

Excellent explanation, thank you.

To add a bit of perspective of what, from my C of E soapbox, makes me bang my head against the wall, there is a very strong strain in US Christianity (among others, but predominantly US-influenced) which says that the best way of doing the Lord's work is to shove Christianity down as many people's throats as possible, nonsensical though it seems to me. Hence, those of them who actually believe in Jesus and aren't just affecting Christianity for votes probably believe that the more God gets into policy, the better, as it will make people believe in Christ (citation needed). Which is such an idiotic attitude to take to foreign policy that it redefines the old adage about arguing with stupid.

Union Pacific celebrating the 250th anniversary of the USA with some loco repaints. What is notable is one very obviously brown-nosing the current President. Nothing to do with needing regulatory sign-off for the merger with Norfolk Southern, of course...

Here's a widespread image of the post. Ironically someone will probably take this post and swap him into it when his time is up:

"Never speak ill of the dead" unless you're Donald Trump who hasn't the restraint to say nothing or the tact to say something neutral that can be interpreted ambiguously.

That provocative style is what has got him, the USA, and now the rest of us, into the hole he seems determined to keep digging.

Funny how just as Trump is egging NATO to be involved in the war an inter-ballistic missile is fired at Diego Garcia; clearly Donald thinks people jump into and get involved with wars without providing the full story…

IF Iran fired the missile that is…

Such an unpleasant man with no grace or class.
And would i take him in place of the embarrassment of a leader we currently have? You bet i would!! Trump is a man with faults aplenty but there is something about the guy that hooks me in every time i see his press conferences. Undoubtedly in a minority on here, maybe it is because he is so different.

Edit.
Must add, I'm getting a bit peed off with Karoline Leavitt though there are comparisons with the nonsense she spouts and a certain Dr Goebbels.

You would like a convicted fraudster, adjudicated rapist, multiple bankrupt, insurrectionist, corrupt, treasonous, demented, idiot as leader? Are you on the same planet as the rest of us?
