I seems likely there will be another scrap move if no more 455s are being used since Wednesday 25/02/2026 (rightly or wrongly). I reckon the short sidings the remaining 455s could use will be needed for 701/5s quite soon. Remember there are only two more 701/0s left to get from outside London and the SE (701049 701045 from Long Marston imminent and 701003 from Derby less likely soon ?) !.

EDIT - I just realised I mixed 049 and 045 up ! - sad considering I saw 049 arrive

This means that both 458/5s are out despite only having one booked diagram.

(And on a separate note, 458/4 reliability seems to have really gone down the proverbial toilet with FOUR 8 car diagrams being covered by other stock throughout the day- two 701s, a 455 pair and now 8533)

It seems the earlier posts saying they’d been stood down were not accurate.

Either way, the end of March and off lease is now approaching fast.

Interestingly 458533 is back on the diagram starting with the 06:20 2C09 depature from Watreloo to Reading and should be also the 09:50 2C23 Waterloo to Reading depature. Deputising for a 450.

Per the 701 thread, looks like 2 701s covered 458/4 diagrams, so maybe that left a 701 working needing a last minute backfill.

Just out of interest are any other units apart from these last few that are still lingering pending withdrawal in SWT colours (8.5 years after SWT lost franchise)

The 455s are on an 8-450 diagram today. There are 6 458/4 diagrams uncovered though (3 pairs). One pair being covered by a single 458/5, and two pairs being covered by a single 450.

They're going anyway, but I wonder if this may all mean that instead of the 450s going to strengthen mainline services ahead of the 458/4s being withdrawn this gets swapped round.

It is encouraging (if that's the right word) to see that it's not broken 701s that are being backfilled, indeed quite the opposite.

With the rollout of more 701s I do wonder if a temporary halt should be called to replacing inner suburban 450 diagrams in favour of replacing some 458/4 diagrams for the next few weeks, and retiring some of the more troublesome 458/4s.

Yes, but there's no work for them. As stated in last month's Modern Railways they'll be going into store later this year. I wouldn't be surprised if that becomes sooner rather than later.

SWR do love a good refurb followed by immediate withdrawal, don't they? At least these turned more wheels than the 442s post refurb. It's an absolute scandal how much money is wasted on units down there

It's just as well they haven't died. Two peak trains from Epsom were cancelled this morning. Would have three without the 455s. I saw them arrive at Waterloo from Dorking. Hard to believe so many people would fit.
