This demonstrates how large the profit margins must be on trainers!

Retailer gross margin on clothing and footwear is normally between 40% and 60%, dependent on the brand and the relative strength of the retailer

They're even larger if the manufacturer sells direct to customer, rather than through a retailer!

Well, yes - although I bet Sports Direct/Frasers Group drives a hard bargain with suppliers.

I was also bombarded with ads for their payment card to get 10% off (a card with 29% APR interest obviously). Even the packet was fully branded for their store card and not Sports Direct.

Which is why they could bin the customised trainers if they had to, knowing that the option to return might lead to more sales given you need to try them on.

Plenty of companies refuse refunds if you customise or engrave a product. Sure, consumer rights apply but most people don't have the time or willpower (or don't know their rights).

Especially with so much brick and mortar competition in the outdoors sector from the likes Mountain Warehouse, Trespass, Millets, etc.

You get what you pay for though in places like Trespass and Mountain Warehouse, some stuff may be decent but most of it is mass produced tat.

Those Halfords Autocentres are popping up everywhere it seems.

What is the issue with them?

My bad, I meant Kiwkfit not Halfords!

Plenty of complaints online about them trying to sell/scare people into unnecessary repair work. I've used them once for an MOT as I needed it in a hurry and they were the only place that could fit me in and they tried to tell me my brake pads and disks needed replacing, the pads and disks I'd replaced myself 12 months earlier an had done about 8k miles on, oh and they also hadn't even noted them as an advisory when they did the MOT!

Never used Kwikfit so we were puzzled by a letter from them last week with an incorrect surname (mis-spelt) warning that we needed to MOT a vehicle that we last owned four years ago.

I stayed near Brean, many years ago. It was nowhere as busy as expected. The reason was, and looking at the Pontins, you could see Chalets without bedding over the fence. Was that, due to the Miner's strike. Block bookings by the NUM had been cancelled.

The Daily Express has said that Sharps Brewery is to close.

Sharp's brewery is to close at Rock in Cornwall. Owner Molson Coors says the site is no longer sustainable. Is this the doom of Doom Bar? My personal opinion is that this will be the only Sharp's brand to survive as most of it is already brewed elsewhere.

One of best known and biggest breweries in Cornwall, producer of a popular ale, is set to close. American owner Molson Coors Beverage Company has revealed that it plans to shut down Sharp’s Brewery in Rock and has begun a formal consultation process with employees.

The site is best known as the birthplace of Doom Bar...

BBC also has the Sharp’s brewery closure story.
A Cornish brewery is set to close with the loss of 50 jobs.

The US brewing firm Molson Coors said it was proposing to shut Sharp's Brewery in Rock by the end of the year because the site was "no longer financially sustainable".

Managing director Simon Kerry said 200 staff would be made redundant across Molson Coors and 50 would be staff at the Rock brewery.

I believe that most - if not all - Doom Bar is brewed elsewhere nowadays..... possibly Burton-on-Trent!

AIUI Doom bottled is brewed in Burton, and cask in Rock. Or the otherway round, can’t remember!

Anyway haven’t had it for a decade. Far better options out there readily available.

Bottled is brewed in Burton; cask in Rock. As an aside St. Austell's bottled Tribute is brewed near Bath (Warmley), only cask is Cornish!

Doom Bar wen't down the drain the second Coors bought Sharpes out, the speed of the drop in quality was noticeable.

I don't drink ales anymore because it's so inconsistent and increasingly difficult to get a decent well-kept pint.

I have never liked it, basically the Cask version of Carling

Much better ales out there

I have used Kwikfit in both Wilmslow and Stockport, going back for many years, and have found them to be good. So I think tarring all their outlets with the same brush is inappropriate. I was once in the Wilmslow one when someone came in and asked for some advice and was reassured that there was no issue, no charge.

Sharps Doom Bar was an ale I did not like. You likening it to Carling Black Label makes a lot of sense to me.

Indeed, it only takes one bad apple. I would say generally car garages have to treated with caution. There are enough bad ones out there "looking for work" but it does not mean all of a particular chain are bad. I have been stung by independents but there are more good ones than bad ones.

I note that Sharp's Brewery is being conflated solely with Doom Bar, which is understandable as their leading product and a nationally recognised name, but I might as well note that they do have other brands as well: Admittedly, their Atlantic pale is probably the equivalent generic offering in that particulr category. Bit surprising that Molson Coors see fit to close presumably one of the higher output breweries in Britain based on the strength and market penetration of those brands (even if the brand recognition isn't necessarily positive, but somebody must be drinking the stuff!). Presumably, they might have identified spare capacity at Burton (with cask ale consumption being a declining sector year on year) to brew the cask stuff alongside the bottled that's already made there.

I don't drink ales anymore because it's so inconsistent and increasingly difficult to get a decent well-kept pint.
I'm surprised to hear that from a presumably Birmingham perspective, as I'm out on the session in Brum on a largely weekly basis, including revisits to the south Birmingham suburbs around where I used to live as well as my usual city centre watering holes (where high throughput generally ensures quality), and it's a rare occurrence indeed that I'm served an even remotely iffy pint of cask. Plus there's the quality of the likes of Batham's and Hobson's just across the Black Country border: Had a pint of Batham's in Stourbridge's Royal Exchange last month that was as crisp and clear as mountain spring water.

i used to like Sharps ales and visited the brewery back in the 90. I used to like Cornish Coaster but it was dropped from the portfolio many years ago. Looking at their website Doom Bar is unsuprisingly mentioned more than any other beer!

Wetherspoons is the only place I've tried Doom Bar and I found it far too heavy.
I think it's awful. We went to Bromley 'spoons for some lunch and it was something daft like a £1 a pint, when asked why I didnt order one by Mrs T, I said I wouldn't have it for free.

I think Atlantic is one of their beers an IPA IIRC, and was palatable. Not seen it for a bit.
