A typical commuter-belt part of north-west England
That's their loss then
There is still the walk from the Gardeners Arms to Moston railway station, with the local feral youths attracted to that area that another thread contributor made mention of earlier in this thread.

It is more years than I can remember, but I used to join in football training at the CWS sports ground opposite the Gardners Arms when I was at Manchester University in the early 1960's

Let’s say you’ve just missed your train, it’s late at night and the next one isn’t for 60 minutes.

Which station would you least like to wait at and why?

Stevenage is pretty grim. The platforms are rather windswept at the best of times, absolutely no pleasing outlook at all, the waiting rooms are horrible, and at times the station is also something of a freak show. Ghastly place.

To be fair, I've never visited Tiverton Parkway, so I can't comment on it.

Shipley's never struck me as being too bad though. I'll bear the Fox in mind if I need to wait there.

I really don't get Charing though.
Tiverton Parkway is literally a massive car park in the middle of nowhere and notably right next to the M5 services, so I'm going to guess - since it doesn't say what type of crimes - that it's thefts of/from vehicles. So perhaps it may not be "least desirable place to wait" but "least desirable place if you want to return to a vehicle with intact windows".

Like you, I really can't understand Charing.

During the day it is beautiful, you walk through a wood to get there and you can barely believe you at a Zone 3 station.
After sunset, that wood is pitch black and is a scary prospect. The mirrors on the path to let you see round the corner of the narrow path down doesn't help the feeling of safety.

Essex Road. Obviously you could leave the station and then it's quite nice Islington, but if you wait inside it's really creepy and deserted and obviously underground.
I've mentioned it on here before, it take a lot to unnerve me, but sitting on the platform at Essex Road, alone, the silence really is deafening, it really put me on edge.
Would you normally ever have to wait all that long (60 minutes +) at somewhere like Essex Road for the next train out of there?

I don't believe so no, but 10 minute was long enough!

Something unnerving about total silence other than the odd water drip or passing train in the opposite platform!

29 mins would be the longest typical wait at Essex Road. Not sure what people find undesirable about it though, for those of us who are very much *not* people persons it sounds like just my kind of place. (I know what it’s like, have never waited too long there though).

It's a lot better since the arrival of the TP services, at least there's enough normal people about now for it to feel safe all of the time. During the day it's actually fairly pleasant and the cafe in particular is nice. It absolutely would have been top of the list for this thread in the early 2000's but I don't think it justifies a mention anymore, there are many much worse station to wait at.
It's definitely better than it was, but it still isn't somewhere you'd choose to hang out on a cold wet evening (unless there were some very rare moves going on). There's plenty of stations in this thread that aren't bad during the day, but that isn't what the OP asked for. Put it this way: if Leeds is eligible because of a few (or a few hundred) rowdy drinkers (post #2) then Wakey Kakey definitely is!
Kirkgate station may have improved, but that end of Wakefield has gotten far far worse in the last few years.

I must admit, I go through and change at Kirkgate at all times and I can't say I've noticed that end of town being particularly worse than before. There's less activity generally and some of the buildings have been knocked down (such as the Snooty Fox)

The bottom end of Wakefield has a serious "roadman" infestation. Kirkgate station used to be an absolute hole, now it's still far from perfect but it's an oasis of calm compared to the surroundings!

Severn Tunnel Junction looks bad enough on a summers day. Can only imagine how cold and bleak an hour there in winter darkness would be.
As far as I know, there's nowhere near to the station to go to!

Bristol Parkway. Even after rebuilding it’s still a cold and windy place.
There is a pub and other amenities in the surprisingly pleasant village of Stoke Gifford which is only about five minutes walk away!

I’ve been to the Beaufort Arms and wished I had stayed at the station.

Regarding cjw714 & Ashley Hill's comments about Bristol Parkway:

I will say that the upstairs seating area is quite good, but I wouldn't want to stay on the platforms for any length of time!

I've looked at the Beaufort Arms for Sunday Lunch , and it doesn't look too bad ... late at night, though, it's a bit of a walk to get there and back!

I'd also nominate Filton Abbey Wood ... I've had to wait there a few times, and it's pretty uncomfortable at night during the winter - although at least there are seats and shelters.

I pass through fairly regularly and interchange onto the bus on the main road, and only once have I encountered some youths smoking green, but they left me alone. There’s a couple of unassuming but nice businesses that have sprung up there including a pizzeria and a pleasant pub to wait in. Some of the buildings have seen better days but I don’t feel threatened in that area- it’s well patrolled by police vehicles too.

On my visit (with friends doing the St Phillips Marsh diversions) about 10 hand pumps were noted. Eight looked very unused and the two in use appeared to be connected to barrels of vinegar. It might have improved since then.

The shopping area surrounding Stevenage station isn’t any better either…!

And not a decent pub in sight!

Another vote for Wakefield Kirkgate. It might be a bit less dodgy than its surroundings, but that's not saying much.

In my student days I developed a particular dislike of waiting for connecting trains on windswept platforms at Nuneaton.

I wonder, do these crime stats also include things like trespass/level crossing misuse being attributed to the nearest station, and onboard crime being attributed to the station where the police meet the train?

Tweedbank. If you're there too early, the coffee shop and waiting room are shut. If you're there too late, the pub and the waiting room are shut.

Falls of Cruachan when you find that you have missed the last service train in the "Summer only" operational station opening time, and the next train to stop there is not due until the Spring operational opening the following year.
Think you're likely to then be walking the 3 or so miles alongside the A85 to Loch Awe station, or maybe getting a taxi to Oban, if you've got signal, rather than waiting. The OP was contemplating stations where there'd only be around a 60 minute wait, to be fair.

Any station where you get to feel the visceral thrill of fast trains shooting past just a few feet away from you can't be all bad. And if you're going to be anywhere in Stevenage, the place where you can quickly get a train out of the town is probably the best!

I've been in a pub like this and thought that the unused ones should be painted white, like signal levers

Wakefield and Nuneaton have something in common then, the area around the station is grim for both!
