Do they? Didn't have them check my ticket getting off at Heathrow in February.
They were checking tickets those leaving the coach at Heathrow last time i used NEX, although this was a couple of years before covid (i haven't used NEX since), & on an overnight coach were the destination was London Victoria, they might not check tickets coaches were the destination is Heathrow/Gatwick.

It’s a fair old hike from Stansted to bmth and very prone to significant delays on the m25 and m3. On the Scalia dash is the brake warning light orange or red?
It was yellow. But it’s always been Nat ex policy anything to do with brakes, steering or anything else that could quickly turn nasty is immediately off the road until rectified. Not anymore…

I have only once had my ticket checked getting off at Heathrow instead of Victoria Coach Station, mainly because drivers are dealing with luggage and dont bother check ticket or notice when get on going to Victoria coach station.

I used the 101 service back from Birmingham to Bristol yesterday afternoon and had a non NX liveried coach (Merc Benz Tourismo) from a company called Amans Travel. This seems to be a scheduled working for the company thats run for the last few months.

Would anyone happen to know why Amans are operating this as opposed to Travelstar European who already part operate the 101?

Amans has the contract for the 101 @ 0855 (Fri) 0920 (Sat-Mon) ex-Plymouth and 1615 (Thu-Mon) ex-Birmingham since October, currently until April. They do not appear to have an NX-liveried or trackable vehicle, however.

Thanks. I know some companies see yellow / orange as a run till end of duty warning but best practice says get it off the road immediately.

I do wonder how much effort Nexp now put into checking contractor compliance.

So a load of customer service assistants were due to be made redundant in January with others having their hours cut. That has now been cancelled. Clown company. Duty cards have also been released for the owned ops Stansted operation. Clearly haven’t been proof-read. Riddled with errors. Some illegal errors on there. Still being told to follow them. Jesus wept what has happened to this company? Flixbus really need to go in for the kill now.
Why do you want to see Nat Ex "Killed"? They're cheaper than Flixbus in my city, more frequent and with better legroom

They deserve it. They’ve taken staff and customers for granted too long, simply because there was no viable coach competition. That’s changed. In ways they never could have imagined. They’re falling apart and running around like ants frantically trying to save their backsides.

How far back are you going? Megabus started in 2004 and that was a significant competitor until they largely pulled out of England last year. There was also some competition from First using the Greyhound brand on a few routes for a number of years. The experience in mainland Europe once Flixbus gets a monopoly isn't that great, so you might end up missing National Express if they end up closing down.

Experience has shown that from the early 1960s demand for coach travel was declining. Competition has rarely lasted long and usually resulted in a pyrrhic victory for the survivor. Privately owned businesses are there to make money for the shareholders and their actions are governed by this imperative.

I presume you are referring to Leicester based on your profile, but it's worth noting that Leicester is far more competitive for NatEx because it's such a strong corridor that they want to keep hold of. If they don't compete and try to hold on to Leicester and Bristol corridors, NatEx might as well give up now.

I don't think Megabus was a strong competitor a lot of the time though. They tended to be the bargain basement option, generally had fewer journeys than NatEx, and served far fewer destinations. Megabus also tended to focus on cross country links rather than London stuff. I don't remember Megabus ever competing against NatEx with 11 buses per day between London and Nottingham, or 11 coaches per day between London and Leicester City Centre, or 22 coaches per day between Bristol and London. Yes Megabus was there, but I don't think they often were a major competitor.

Flix has come in, all guns blazing, and out to win over the whole network. That is a very different style of competition to what Megabus was.

I cant speak for the others, but Megabus absolutely were a major competitor on the bristol to london route. To claim otherwise is nuts. The coaches were always rammed and NatEx actively put their prices up for a short period of time when Megabus pulled out (though quickly realised doing that too much would give Flix the market so have calmed down again now).

Megabus were a competitor to NExp but self evidently only on routes they both operated. Most customers of Nexp only travel on one or two routes.

Megabus competed mainly on price but needed high load factors to operate profitably. At weekends and during school holidays this was possible but midweek and in the winter very difficult indeed. It doesn't take much of a lean period to soak up the profits from the good days. Megabus established pick up / drop off points at many universities to tap into student demand.

I didn't think Megabus was that big on the Bristol to London corridor? Though I am basing off what I can remember of their services.

Which seemed to be very few. Or where they did both operate routes, Megabus tended to run much less frequently. Not so much giving NatEx a run for their money like Flixbus is doing.

They had a service every hour pretty much, I preferred the Plaxton Elite Interdecks on the M10 to the Levante 2's of NX at the time. Plus when my local route in Bristol started/ended on The Horsefair the stop was more convenient.

I won’t miss them. Baring in mind I’m talking purely from an employee perspective. Not a customer. I’ve never used a scheduled coach for travel on all my life even though I could for free. Neither do I intend to.

That comment concerns me greatly. If you wont use them then it begs the question why should customers? It also shows a lack of confidence in your colleagues and the company you work for.

It's not an industry where I'd like to try and chose friends; they're all awful and they're all arguments against private sector involvement in public transport. I used to use National Express to go the airport, but yield managed fares and a reduced service level meant they didn't really have the flexibility you need for the return journey from an airport so I now only use them if I really have to.

Compared to National Express Flixbus appear to have insufficient control over their subcontractors, but they're now my only operator to London so I reluctantly sometimes use them too.

I won’t use them purely for the fact I have a car that can do any coach journey at least three times as fast, direct and I don’t have to share cabin space with some of the dregs we get on board. I’m not even taking into account the worsening service provided by national express and my “colleagues”.

Why do you feel it has worsened though? Just feels like you have a personal bias against them. I didn't enjoy my time at NX in 2018/2019, I'll be 100% honest with you. But if I let that cloud my judgement of the overall service then I'd simply never use any coach of any kind again to get anywhere. NX has better fares than Flixbus I have found which is why I tend to use them more often than not.

When there is a high chance of a 12 year redundancy package. I think not. I’m hanging on for now.

For a London - Scotland journey who is best for comfort between Flix, NEX and megabus? I've heard legroom is really poor on Flix.

I've never used Megabus, they've pulled out of my city. I use National Express primarily as they're cheaper, have more services and better legroom. I use Flix sometimes and the seat reservation and booking fees add to the cost, but they've been ok on the odd 2-3 hour journey i've done with them. London - Scotland i'd pick National Express due the legroom.

Yes, Leicester and - thanks to that competition - we have multiple services with cheap fares

Why anybody would want one of those "killed" is beyond me. I wouldn't benefit anybody

Thanks for that.

I have been wondering what Alsa in Spain is doing differently, especially as to my knowledge, Renfe as a rail operator seems fare more efficient, with High Speed Rail and yet cheaper than UK rail operators for equivalent distances.

A random example, Barcelona to Santiago de Compestela on Renfe, about 1000km (!!!) has fares from £59, departing today, and £86 in Premium. A very random journey - can you imagine Cross Country charging those prices on the day of travel? :D

Flixbus Yutongs are the worse for legroom out of them, seats are not uncomfortable though. National Express seat is more comfortable and legroom better, perhaps a better chance of a seat free next to you. Megabus double deck coaches are pretty comfortable.

Night services tend to be busier and quicker.

National Express have published the Christmas Day and Boxing Day fares on their fares page now:

They are taking the mick with these fares. Christmas Day fares are approximately triple the normal fare. So if you want to travel on Christmas Day then you have to pay three times your usual fare. They are really taking advantage of the fact that no trains are running and people have no choice. Boxing Day fares are only a couple pounds extra compared to the usual fares.

Up thread it was mentioned that NX should employ people who have some knowledge of the coach industry. Employing those with a lack of knowledge is nothing new. Back in the day I worked for NX as a " Customer Experience Manager" at Milton Keynes Coach way. For reasons I won't go into my services were dispensed with. I believe the person who replaced me was, as I understand it an ex Spanish Hotel Manager. Obviously a vast knowledge of public transport in this country was on hand.
