It's a real downgrade on what was previously used, is there any plan to improve things?

I can't imagine there's anything to fix it other than completely ripping out the wiring on the unit and re-doing it, as it's also linked to both cabs, the disabled alarms, and any intermediate phones at GOPs.

It's the retrofitting of TrainFX to the 170s garbling the speakers. I have to put up with it everyday if its any consolation :D
Same thing with the 333s. Even though the old system is outdated & needs to be replaced, replacing it with TrainFX is also a downgrade imho.

They would have been better off going with any other PIS System in both scenarios (i.e: Televic, Whiteleys/BTROS, Annax, etc)

That's a shame, it sounds really cheap and home made.

The problem I've noticed with TrainFX is the lack of audio filtering / equalisation. The bass of the voices can shake the panels (no high-pass filter, so ~120Hz comes through, even though you don't really need anything below 400 in this application) yet the treble is really muffled (nothing above about 6KHz, which itself is weak with no boost on it).

And there's just me - and probably most other passengers who just want a train on time, preferably of the correct length.

Yes, I know what you mean here, the audio switches between muffled and quite jarring and back again all with plenty of background interference, it doesn't flow at all.

Well yes, the basics help as well.

Reported on facebook today. Please can anyone confirm this was 150225 in bits? TVM...

I saw two carriages of a 150 (?)in darkness in Northern livery on low loaders at 5.40am on the M60 anti-clockwise near Heaton Park, Manchester on Tuesday morning 18th November. Any idea which one & where it might have been going ?

I only saw 156401 last Sunday morning when I was on my way to Victoria, it was stabled at Newton Heath Depot in full view of Metrolink Tracks, so obviously it can be moved whether on its own or with help from another unit.

Nothing planned at the moment for 769's, the 156's are supposed to be done this year but I wouldnt hold my breathe.
This was from April 2024 so good job you didn't hold your breath. I'm presuming the run down ex-GA and ex-EMR 156s are not in line for any interior refurbishment whatsoever now?

I've been wondering about the 156s too. I note a few have had the infamous ironing boards seats put in, which whilst far from comfortable do mean that there is at least a bit more legroom than some of the horrendously configured 156s which see some rows with seats so close together even Ryanair would baulk at the legroom. Are there any plans to swap out seats on 156s, or are we stuck with these until the new stock lands in a few years.

You will be stuck with them now - in the original refurb plan when Arriva took on the franchise in 2016 it was intended to replace more seats than actually happened, certainly the whole 158 fleet was meant to get new seats, however the plan got curtailed down to just new seat covers and fill.

The "ironing board" 156's are five Heaton based units that came South from ScotRail to Northern in 2019 IIRC. They are: 156447, 156449, 156465, 156485 and 156496. 156485 is currently "loaned" to Newton Heath, along with 156421 and 156491, whilst the Whitehaven tunnel problems are resolved.

Cheers for the replies. Whilst they are not the best, it would have been nice to have these in all units for the reasons above.

Are these the same seats fitted to the 2 car 158s and 195s?
Yes. It came from Scotrail last year. Already had the seats fitted. Just the Northern moquette was needed. Also has the seat grab handles finished in a darker Yellow. One other different feature is that it has sockets at the seats for phone chargers.
