... and any freight that does want to head west can run via Westbury if needed (or a convoluted loop via Avonmouth).
More likely, a double header with the driver changing ends at Temple Meads.

Before they messed with SPM and did away with the through line as a "main" running line (it's now a depot line), a train would have been routed Bristol West Jcn -> TM -> North Somerset Jcn > SPM > back to Bristol West Jcn...

If you really need to you can still go through the depot, they did it when Temple Meads was blocked a couple of years ago I think. The point is, there's options for traffic to get from Portbury to Devon if it really needed to, and there's not likely to be sufficient demand to justify building the direct curve within the potential lifespan of the theoretical bridge. Therefore if you built a bridge you are increasing your costs to mitigate against a risk that has minimal chance of actually happening.

It's not like when a bypass cuts off a route between two towns (A22/A26 at Uckfield).

Apologies I meant the loop itself. That’s been gone lot longer hasn’t it?
The West curve was gone either before Bristol PSB took control in 1970, or it was disconnected when Bristol PSB took control and the mechanical signal boxes in this area (apart from Ashton Junction) were closed.

Portishead West Curve closed 06/12/1971, the down line retained as a siding until March 1980. R. A. Cooke track diagrams section 19A.

Tree clearance is due to start today at the Portishead end of the line
Also demo of the old station buildings at Pill is underway albeit it soft strip at this very moment. Was trying to find some old images of station topside buildings but very little out there as they were away from the actual platforms

The same with Bicester-Bletchley, any remnants of old stations etc were obliterated.

Actually got me thinking what physical infrastructure (Platforms/Station buildings) will be left on the Portishead Branch.

Ashton Signal Box - demo'd early 1990s?
Ashton Gate Station - Platforms remain
Clifton Bridge Station - Platforms & Bridge remain
Nightingale Valley Halt - Nothing remains
Ham Green Halt - Platform remain
Pill Station - Signal box demolished in 1964, Street level buildings due for demo by end of year, coal sidings removed in 2000 prior to freight reopening.
Portbury Shipyard - Nothing remains.
Portbury Station - platform & station now private residence.
Portishead Station(s) - Pier station building demo'd for RNLI 2015, Original station demo' 1954, Second Station closed 1964, used as part of petrol station till Waitrose? circa 2000.

So the demo of the Pill buildings will leave pretty much just a few platforms and Portbury station as the only remements of the original line operation.

Was any of it particularly architecturally notable or historically significant?

Having no leftover Victorian cottages will make it easier to build modern facilities better suited to present and future travel demands.

Oh no the Pill streetside stuff is absolutely insignificant - as say can find very little photographic evidence of these buildings in BR use as most pictures are all at platform level

The most architectural significant station on the branch was Portbury, which for a relatively small use stop (much smaller population than Pill/Portishead) was rather grand.

Suspect the biggest loss - which has already happened long ago - was the loss of the "new" Portishead station - terminal stations (re-)built in that era are rare.

The station building itself lasted into the 90s as a car showroom/garage. The platform canopy was pretty lovely though, for its age/era, and probably would have been listed by now if it had remained.

The particular value would probably have been the “ensemble”. A 1950s branch terminus was surely a one-off in this country?
A completely unrelated thought - are there any plans to rename Station Road in Portishead? What has been a quaint reminder of things past (as in many other towns) is about to become a source of confusion.

From the outside photos it was still rather unremarkable. Probably the 1950s equivalent of the station building shown in the publicity images for the new Portishead station!

I imagine not, it'd be a right palava for any records that rely on the road names and any resident or business with an address on the current Station Road. The best option would probably be to make it 'Old Station Road' but the chances are it'll just be left as is.
Most people will have a look at google and realise quickly enough where the new station is, and for those who doggedly follow road names still there'll be signage pointing to the station. The lack of a track or platforms will also be a suitable clue!

And, of course, there is always the off-chance that the station could end up being resited again!

Fair point - can't be many mid sized town terminus stations that lasted as short a period as it did!

Interesting thought about Station road but I doubt they would.. you could argue it still has a fire station on it :D

There is a large yellow JCB removing trees and bushes at the Portishead end of the line visible from Quays Avenue.

Tree and bushes clearance works under way at Portishead. Photo taken towards the new station site.

Does the track need relaying through Pill? The platform almost certainly needs replacing (as in even taking out the foundations).

Think it’s due to be two single lines through Pill isn’t it - so looking at that picture 1 of them will.

Correct, the turnout will be south of Pill station AIUI. So the platform coping visible on the right of the picture wont be the passenger platform.

The left hand side will be in use, not sure if that’s deemed as the up on a passing loop?

That side had the signal box for the loop and from memory of exploring the station as a child 40 odd years ago there was still the footprint/hole where the box once stood. Be interesting to see if it’s visible when they cutback.

Will see if I can get some pics at weekend of all the work so far

Oi! I walked along the platform on the right of the picture about five years ago! Did have to watch for the tripping hazards otherwise known as the vegetation...
Haha fair. I think this is first time they’ve cleared it right to the embankment behind. Got vague recollections of seeing the shelter under the stairs on right hand side being visible one time too.

On a point of pedantry, It wont be a loop as such but rather just extending the dock line to join south of the platform. Down will be towards Portishead, Up to Bristol.

So you'll have a Portishead Single on the 'down' side with one platform for both directions and a Portbury Docks Single/Siding (or whatever it ends up being called) on the 'up' side without a platform, I think.
