How many 455s are still in service now then? And if I want to get in a ride on one before they're all withdrawn, should I do so like, now? And what services are they most used on?

Officially down to 11 pairs and a single so 23 units each day. Loiter around platforms 1 to 6 at Waterloo and you won't have to wait long. They still run every route on the slow lines through Wimbledon. The Chessington/Woking/Guildford cycle has the greatest proportion of 455s, roughly 50%, shared with (off the top of my head) two 701s and four pairs of 450s.

There's three Reading diagrams which are 455 this morning when there should be nil, so the official figure is somewhat lower than the actual figure.

As I type 455709 and 455729 are approaching North Sheen forming 2O39 on their way to Strawberry Hill

These two were still in passenger service, on different diagrams, at the time of Mondays scrap run. Both got caught up in the massive disruption caused by the incident at Vauxhall, so I am not exactly certain when they both finished. However, RTT does show 5860 arriving Waterloo at 2019. If this allocation is correct, then 5860 will be departing for scrap in 38 hours from passenger service, which is 2 hours faster than 5908 which currently holds that record. Of course, it could be even less if 5718 or 5860 worked something later on Monday evening that I have not picked up.

Indeed. It's the "someone else" who has gone into administration. As I understand the news article, the funding they need to complete the deal has fallen through, leaving them committed to buy something they can no longer afford.

(similar to the situation where, after you have exchanged contracts, your bank has changed its mind about giving you a mortgage, or the property you were going to sell to fund the purchase has gone down in value).

From what I can tell, Unimetals has not ceased trading, so it would likely be business as usual until that point, if indeed it comes to that. The appointment of administrators does not necessarily mean a company is finished.

Could we end up seeing some 455s going to store, rather than straight to scrap, if Newport is at least mothballed? SWR will want them out of Wimbledon to make room for 701s, and, depending on the ROSCO, space is becoming available at Long Marston and Marchwood as 701s leave these sites.
