Branwell's Mills Premier Inn

A good hotel located just across the road to Penzance railway station. I was in a Premier Plus room which had all the normal things that you would find. The breakfast served is quite good, with it being a buffet. They had some components of an English breakfast, such as hash browns, sausages, bacon and baked beans available, as well as toast and cereal.

Where would everyone look for railway related holiday accomodation - such as staying in a disused station, or a holiday cottage that overlooks a railway line? I've seen https://www.railwaystationcottages.co.uk/ but there doesn't appear to be a massive number on there. Are there any facebook pages etc? More looking at self catering for a week than a hotel with a room that might have a view...

Good got Dent Station (https://www.dentstation.co.uk/) which I've stayed at myself which is lovely. The village is a fair bit from the station though.

It has everything you need, private access and parking.

Also on the Settle & Carlisle line, self-catering accommodation is available in Kirkby Stephen station building and Ribblehead Station Master's House....plus the privately-owned former station building at Long Marton just North of Appleby.

I've used a couple in Scotland - they are a notch or two down from M&B's 'Miller & Carter' chain, but OK.

My wife and I have just returned from a short trip to Dublin and stayed here.

Everything was fine for us and they were happy to store our bags early on our day of arrival. They would also have been happy to store them on our day of departure, should we have needed that service. .. TAKE NOTE LIVERPOOL ONE PREMIER INN who refused this service

The hotel is quite new, I think it was completed in 2024.

It's a wee bit out of the city centre, but there are regular buses (G1/G2) as well as the red-line tram service (Luas) to 'The Point' station .. a 5 minute walk to the hotel ..if that !

Always got my eye on that Premier Inn if I stay over in Dublin. Sometimes the cheapest out one if not sold out.

Premier Inn, Chesterfield

Stayed here last week after the BLS tour to Derby works, around a 7 minute walk from the station in the town centre area, with various takeaways close by. Usual Premier Inn style rooms with AC with minimal outside noise in the room I had (although I suspect it's another hotel where noise levels will vary dependant on which side of the building you are on.

Stayed here for the last few days on a little North Eastern getaway, using Whitley Bay as a base owing to it being cheaper than Newcastle city centre. Little guest house with 6 bedrooms with the owner living downstairs, around 7 minutes walk from the Metro station (with various bus routes close by) with a Spoons & other shops close by. Hardly any outside noise (other than the wind and the occasional seagull). Bed was reasonably comfortable but the curtains could have been a darker material to help block out the light.

Sadly the Premier Inn has completely priced itself out of most people's budgets now. About ten years ago, late September IIRC, we had a sea view room for three nights for £95, now you're looking at that for one night in the middle of November!

Best for Premier Inn was a couple weeks ago when I was looking at Cardiff for a Sunday night, had 3 Travelodges listed for £25-26 a night with Easyhotel wanting £29. Cheapest Premier Inn was £49, more expensive than the "Four Points Flex by Sheraton".

I was surprised to get the Chesterfield one for £42 considering most places in Derby were expensive (or had more restrictive check-in times/ a mile+ from the station).

I agree price wise Premier Inn have lost the plot rooms are far to expensive rarely any cheap ones even if looking at booking months in advance , I have switched to Travelodge

Even in terms of quality, I think pi have somewhat slumped. Too many minor maintenance issues that when combined you really wouldn't expect for the money you're paying, and of course there's the ongoing nonsense with food and restaurants which ultimately will come back to bite them as people like me who might have stayed in a cheaper out of town location because there was an uninspiring but reliable chain eatery next door now look elsewhere because food delivery is either not always available or very expensive in some locations. I'm still careful what I do with Travelodge, there are ones that I know are reliable, but there are others, particularly some of the city centre locations that are still far too unpredictable and I won't use.

We looked at PI in Lincoln for September.
Usually we've got rooms for between £70 - £150.
But due to Graduation the rooms are over ££300.

Travelodge in Lincoln is the same
Holiday Inn Express is the same but still a bit cheaper than the other two especially as breakfast is in cluded.

So if you are going to a city/Town with a University be careful of Graduation events.

I've just made a Travelodge booking for the beginning of October, and to my surprise received a subsequent email offering me a choice of room for £3.50 per booking. As it's Scarborough and there are some sea view rooms I've taken them up on it, very happy with such a bargain.

Also when I selected my nights (at the non-refundable rate) it came up as £119.97 for the three nights, but when I proceeded through "extras" etc. and subsequently payment, it had gone down to £113.97. Is there some sort of deal on for October? I haven't seen anything about it if so.

Worth having a look at if anyone is planning anything!

I was looking for a Room for my Son and I in Inverness on a Thursday Night in October.

Both Premier Inn and Travelodge were around £80 which of course excludes Breakfast. I was expecting around £50 but out with Sunday Nights that now seems a distant memory.

Sometimes I hark for the days pre-dynamic pricing when they were Fixed Rates.

Highland Hotel Express by Holiday Inn all around the £80 - £100 mark.

In the end I opted for Courtyard by Marriott at the Airport as we are meeting people the next day flying up from down south.

£92 but includes Breakfast.

In January this year, my wife and I visited the city and stayed at the River Ness Premier Inn, on a Saturday and Sunday night for a grand total of £78 excluding breakfast. We thought this was quite a bargain .. see my previous posting on this thread, ref 1565.

For the same period in 2026, it would be £87, still pretty good (Saturday 3rd & Sunday 4th)

At times it can £200+ per night

A bit further afield - my recommendation, out of the places I've stayed at this year, is La Michelle Hotel, St. Martin's, Guernsey. It's a bit of a way out of St. Peter Port but just off the main bus route to the airport. Get off at Fermain Valley Road and walk down a road called Les Hubits de Bas. Of course there aren't any railways on Guernsey so maybe not too relevant to Forum members, unless heading for Alderney for its weekly train! I can supply more info if wanted.

I've only just come across this thread and I might find it useful, provided I stick to recent recommendations.

Premier Inn Cardiff City Centre (Stadium)​

My wife and I have just returned from a short trip to Cardiff and stayed here.

Everything was great and the hotel is handy to everything. The hotel is quite new, I think it was completed in 2024.

There are two Weathspoons very nearby, which both do great breakfasts .. The Great Western and The Prince of Wales

The hotel is a 5-minute walk (if that) from Cardiff Central Railway Station.

For train enthusiasts, there are great views too.

Hilton by Hampton at Luton Airport Station.

Stayed 1 night before a a flight from Luton the next day. Paid around £70.

Room perfectly acceptable if a bit tired. View over the Railway tracks.

Breakfast was average , still rate the PI over it.

Inverness Rooms, 112 Academy Street, Inverness.

Adjacent to the excellent Phoenix Alehouse and opposite the Blackfriars Pub, a mere five minutes walk from the station. I assume that the double rooms are located in the main building above the pub....but there are four en-suite singles in a timber-clad extension to the rear, reached through a wooden gate across a gravel path off Rose Street.

Compact, but clean and comfortable rooms unlocked by keypads. Small flat screen TV and kettle with tea and coffee-making facilities. Toilet, shower and wash-handbasin.

No breakfast, but I was looking forward to the full LNER on the 07 55 Highland Chieftain to London....until I arrived at the station to find it cancelled due to some idiot driving their car onto the track between Dunkeld and Perth.

Still....the room was a steal - by Inverness standards - at £66 through Booking.com
