Anyone been able to find the menu PDFs please? I can only seem to find a long list of text which isn't particularly easy to read

I think this is the first time steak of any sort has appeared on the menu since the end of restaurant cars back in 2011?

Looks like an okay set of changes though overall.

Couple of things I spotted that it seems scrambled egg is no longer an option on the Full LNER (poached eggs remain) and I'm sad to see the loss of the BBQ Chicken Croque that was tasty the times I had it (though I think @yorkie had a disappointing experience with it?). Some other interesting options on there and seeing Eggs Royale is a good idea. Nice intermediate option between just a full breakfast or a bacon/sausage roll.

Sorry I can't answer your question, but I'm curious whether the staff onboard would accommodate requests for the Steak to be cooked well done- as someone who doesn't like eating steak which has been cooked medium.

I remember some time ago ordering Steak on the TFW one evening heading out of Cardiff towards Chester and the staff happily cooked mine Well Done instead of medium.

The Eggs Royale seems a bit stingy tbh. Anywhere else - a hotel or cafe - if you order Eggs Royale/Benedict/whatever, you get double what they're offering....

Surely a PDF is only going to be laid out the same way it is on that webpage? Not sure what you mean by "long list of text"?

Prefer medium-rare myself. Maybe it's pre-cooked? Seems a bit odd to offer steak, but the usual level of cooking preference. :s

BTW does anyone know when the paupers' menu kicks in for December? I'm travelling in early December and hoping to miss it.

No pdfs, but here's some pics.

Steak was good but could have lived with a touch more sauce. Apple tart is excellent

Bavette (skirt) is normally a very cheap cut, but also plenty tasty if cooked correctly. I'm impressed

I would expect requests could be accommodated, the whole point of Dine is that those are the services with chefs onboard so you'd think they could do the steak accordingly!

When I did the Highland Chieftain last Friday and Monday to/from Inverness, the lounge at KGX was very busy and annoyingly wasn't offering soft drinks (except sparkling water if this counts), though the busy nature was probably disruption related. I also asked the staff if they could sort out the live departure display to show more than 1 page: as the one page had no more than 4 departures on it, exacerbated by 3 of those being delayed departures. When the 12:00 was platformed, the staff member announced it to the room, which they wouldn't have had to do if the departure screen was more detailed.

The service on the trains in both directions though was better, meals were promptly ordered and served, plus plenty of refreshment runs.

I caught the 13:00 Kings Cross to Edinburgh in May. I arrived in the lounge about half an hour or so before the HC was due boarding, and it was rammed. Never seen it so busy. Had a job finding somewhere to sit. Quietened down a bit when that train came up, and lots of people left.

I'll have a better time with my next trip, where I'll be arriving in the lounge when it's only just opened, shortly after 7 am. Based on past experience the place will be deserted.

Yeah the Kings Cross lounge has been pretty naff for a while now. It's often busy (even with entry restrictions on how long before and after you can visit) and the actual offer isn't particularly great either. It's basically now just a slightly upmarket waiting room. Which is fine as long as you match expectations accordingly!

Isn’t that all it’s ever been? Slightly better seats and the chance of a free cup of tea. What other expectations would you have - a live floor show? Wine tasting sessions? The complete inconsistency of the on-train offer in first class depending on crew attitude and service time is a much more serious customer service issue.

Edinburgh firstclass lounge is adequate-but-spartan.. Could do with slightly less crappy coffee machines, and maybe something more than water in the cold drink offering, but are quietish and cleanish.

Kings Cross lounge is typically noisy, and busy to the point where I get a bit overwhelmed, and pretty filthy. I'd generally rather be virtually anywhere else in the station.

I'd agree it's not a priority, but it's genuinely significantly worse than useless

Was a weekly user 2014-2016 and I don’t remember the Kings Cross lounge ever being that special save for being a peaceful space. Now it’s nothing special and very crowded!

Try some decent business class airport lounges and you'll see what LNER's lounges are missing. Decent coffee, proper hot food, relaxing music etc.

Given that LNER first class is directly competing with the likes of BA Club Europe on the Newcastle and Edinburgh routes, it's an entirely fair comparison in my view.

I tried the Eggs Royale today. It was good, and served promptly (chef must have anticipated demand before the train called at York).

The portion size is small but is in keeping with what you expect from LNER, however it didn't leave me feeling hungry (I am not one for large breakfasts, unless I am skipping lunch). If anyone wants a substantial breakfast, then the full LNER is the best option by far (or maybe the veggie version, but I've not tried that, so can't comment).

No juice was offered on today's run, but that doesn't bother me, as there were 2 x hot drinks runs and both times I was offered water, so that will do for me. I didn't specifically ask if they had juice, so I don't know if it was just not offered or unavailable, but I wasn't fussed.

I don't tend to get evening dine trains, as nearly all my non-morning trains are Deli or, if I am lucky, Dish at best, so I may not get to try the steak. Personally, I would have preferred the salmon from the previous menu, but I never got to try it. It can be difficult for me to find Dine trains at suitable times for the journeys I make.

With regards to soft drinks in the lounges, there must be a reason why its not regularly offered. Cost perhaps. I am not a hot drinks lover so I always appreciate a cold drink.

I get the impression they were just absolutely furious that people sometimes took a can with them, so they got rid of the fridge entirely. Personally i would have thought switching the drinks over to Pepsi would have done the trick

Not sure how it is normally, but when I went in the lounge in May, and it was busy (as I said), they were rigidly enforcing the 2 hour rule. There were a couple in front of me when I was waiting to show my ticket for entry, and they were being told in no uncertain terms that they couldn't go in since their train was more than 2 hours away, and they weren't very happy about it. Personally I've never had a need to enter more than 2 hours before my train.

I have no issue with 2 hours, however they sometimes rigidly enforce 1 hour on Sundays, which is absurd when you have a generous cross London connection.

The sort of people who make these rules don't travel by train or, if they do, they don't have to worry about connection times and that sort of thing. Nor do they consult people who do.

They could consult forum members, but I'm pretty sure that would go against LNER's entire ethos ;))

I'll be subject to the 1 hour thing, on my return journey in December, in the York lounge, because it's a Friday evening. That may, or may not, be an issue, depending on what I end up doing that day. The past few years I've visited York, I've returned home on a Thursday, so it wasn't a consideration.

And once again, LNER doesn’t just serve Newcastle and Edinburgh. UK domestic airline routes are a complete irrelevance to the vast majority of rail travellers. Perhaps if all the incredibly important Londoners who absolutely must get to Edinburgh very quickly just got themselves off to BA Club World then there’d be a bit more room on the trains for travellers to all the other stations. Rail could then stop having to pander to the kind of up-themselves “business traveller” who thinks that frequent flyer miles, golf club membership, and knowing the details of airport lounges are things to be aspired to.

You’d have a better time waiting in the York Tap - decent pork pies and both soft and licensed drinks.

The whole revamp of the East Coast timetable in December is based on providing extra capacity to Edinburgh. A few other places get minor improvements (and a fair few lose out), but that's the major change.

Of course not. But they are clearly two of their most important markets commercially speaking, and they're the whole reason that other local flows are being shafted in the December timetable change.

To rail travellers overall across the country, yes. But to LNER passengers - of whom the London-Newcastle/Edinburgh flows make up a substantial proportion - they are much more likely to be relevant.

Yawn. All I'm saying is that LNER's lounges really aren't competitive with the airlines. Given the prices they charge for first class, it really should be better.

Rail could then stop having to pander to the kind of up-themselves “business traveller” who thinks that frequent flyer miles, golf club membership, and knowing the details of airport lounges are things to be aspired to.
It's not about aspiring to those things but about making the travel experience as comfortable as possible when you're travelling regularly or on a tight schedule.

Well, lounges apart, I had my first trip on LNER in 3 years today, discounted advance 1st ticket from Harrogate to KX. Really can't fault the on board team - good humoured, motivated, very well organised although my coach was admittedly only half full. Late morning departure so my meal choice was a lunchtime box of cheesy/sliced meaty nibbles and was fine. Worth the few extra sheckels I invested. Would book again, no doubt.

Another problem I noticed with the lounge was getting to it. Unless there was a secret staircase I didn't notice, it was mainly by 1 lift that featured a queue (because that was the only way up it seems). Exiting to the platforms wasn't so bad.
I get the impression they were just absolutely furious that people sometimes took a can with them, so they got rid of the fridge entirely. Personally i would have thought switching the drinks over to Pepsi would have done the trick
If they are paranoid about that, perhaps they could do what certain restaurants do and have a draught machine: customers can fill up a glass as often as needed in the lounge, but this stops taking any soft drink volume out of the lounge. Of course clever folk could fill up a refill bottle instead, but there you could just enforce a rule against it.

unless connecting between trains I never see the need for a lounge, half the selling point of a train is that you can turn up 10 mins before. At the airport you have to turn up 60-90 mins early and then have a ton of dead time, so the lounge is far more important.

Other users experiences and requirements may vary.

I rarely visit the Kings Cross area, so am usually connecting. A lot of people will be doing similar.

I also don't like to cut my arrival times fine if I can avoid it; delays are not unheard of. On a recent occasion I was an hour late into Kings Cross. I had booked an earlier train than I needed, so would have visited the KGX lounge if I was on time. I also got to the origin station a bit early to avoid the after school traffic; the delay meant I spent more time in the station than I had anticipated, so the lounge was useful.

LNER don't allow me to cut it fine for an affordable price; the East Coast main line pricing is primarily airline style, for most people these days.

The time is not dead time if I can get my laptop out and get some work done.
