197119 has suddenly appeared to become Mr Urdd...! Officially named "Mistar Urdd" on the unit which has some vinyls of the mascot across the unit. Quite interesting and I'm all for putting these onto the 197s.
Talking of named 197s, I saw 197125 the other day and it didn't have any nameplates on it, despite it supposedly being named "The Cheltenham Spa Express" according to the 197 Wikipedia article. Does anyone in here know what's up with that?

197035 appears to have entered service today

Currently at Manchester Airport waiting to work:
197035 is the 8th ETCS-fitted 197 to have entered service @Peter Sarf.

This now means that 64 (of 77) 197s have been in service.

38 (of 51) 2-car 197s have been in service:
All 30 non-ETCS 2-cars (197001-002, 197004-021, 197042-051)
8 (of 21) ETCS-fitted 2-cars (197003, 197028-031, 197033-035)

All 26 3-car 197s have been in service:
All 12 188-seat 3-cars (197101-112)
All 14 174-seat 3-cars (197113-126)

==============================

The number of 197s still to enter service is down to 13, all ETCS-fitted 2-cars:
197022-027, 197032, 197036-041

==============================

The overall number of new Transport for Wales (TfW) trains that have been in service is now up to 93 (of 148):

38 (of 51) 197/0s
All 26 197/1s
All 11 231s
1 (of 7) 756/0
All 17 756/1s

This leaves 55 new TfW trains still to enter service:

13 197/0s
36 398s
6 756/0s

Thanks. That's eight out of twenty-one of the ETCS 197/0s that are in use ?.
That's correct for "have been in use" for those at least - 197003/028/029/030/031/033/034/035

They have a fridge. As far as I'm aware there are no facilities for heating food and I don't think any are planned. They have fresh water tanks fitted but apparently these wont be used due to the process required to make sure they meet the safety regulations etc. Last I heard the plan for the catering cupboards was to replace the current doors (which open up into the aisle) with a roller shutter style door. The trolley would be housed in the cupboard and orders can be made at seat via QR codes, the host would then bring your order to you.

No idea if it's changed since, not heard anything in a while.
Thanks for explaining. Ordering via QR code would certainly be handy.

Thats great that another 197 has come into service. I need 033 and 035 now. Not seen 033 mentioned on RTT for a while.

197028- In service
197029- In service
197030- Stored at Holyhead since February
197031- Stored at Holyhead since February

Many thanks for this :)

So 197022, 197024 and 197027 are the 3 that have been accepted but haven't yet entered service.

It looks like 197024 will likely be the 65th 197 to enter service then?

Do you know why 197030, 197031 and 197033 (and 197003) have been stored for so long after having been in service (and presumably 197034 will be stored for quite some time)? Is it just depot capacity limitations, not enough diagrams yet, or what?

Finally, I appreciate that you work with numbers rather than names, but with 197119 now being named Mistar Urdd, I'd just like to check if Wikipedia's Project UK Railways has the list of named units correct, as there's a claim of 197125 being named "The Cheltenham Spa Express" (according to The Railway Magazine), but when I saw 197125 recently, it didn't appear to be carrying any nameplates (namestickers, whatever)?

Yes, Looks like 197024 is a likely candidate to enter service next.

As far as I know theres a certain amount of units from the ERTMS fleet required to be provided and they're cycled round just to keep them operational and that the ones at Holyhead are periodically run up to keep them working. Others can then be used to cover for other out of use units on top of that number.

I can as close as certainly as possible say that 197125 doesn't carry a name. I've not seen anything about a unit being named after Cheltenham, a 197 would be a strange choice too seeing as they're not heading there long term..

Looking more closely, I can see that the 'Cheltenham Spa Express' name for 197125 was added to Wikipedia on the 10th August 2024, quoting 'Butlin, Ashley (August 2024). "Multiple Units". Stock Update. The Railway Magazine. Vol. 170, no. 1481. p. 87., It wasn't removed until today, when Mistar Urdd was added.

I have a picture taken on the 21st Aug showing the full length of the unit and it had no name on it then

Thank you for this update. I was wondering why a few seem to have disappeared from service.

Of the non ERTMS there are a few of them that have been missing for a while too.

197101 & 197110 are the 3 cars that have been missing for a while. 197101 was in parts for a long time and 197110 seems to have vanished. They are the only 3 cars that havent been in service for a long time

It was removed at 17:58 by an unregistered user (shown as an IP address), with no edit summary. They must have seen the addition of 197119 Mistar Urdd at 16:36 by a registered user (shown as their username) and realised that something wasn't right with the whole 197125 Cheltenham thing.

A content aggregator is an individual, organization, or software that collects content from various online sources and presents it in one place for easy access (by Google AI overview!) Therefore, an AI content aggregator is software that does it.

Ah, thanks a lot for the information :)

Yeah, it did seem somewhat odd. I think, going forward, only the Transport for Wales news articles for 197 namings should be relied on as sources for the named units in the Wikipedia article.

Come to think of it though, two 231s have been named with Caerphilly and Barry names, even though it would eventually make more sense to have those names on 756s, rather than have those names going to Cheltenham (or even Bridgend, Ebbw Vale and Maesteg).

Yes I remember 197101 was in parts. A few of the two cars are missing also. They just about seem to be coping to cover their diagrams at the moment wirh only a few short forms recently.

197037 is at Crewe depot at the moment.

What does that mean in terms of acceptance? :)
ATC at Crewe is where all the mileage accumulation runs go from (along the Coast to Holyhead generally) and final acceptance is carried out there along with any mods and repairs which are necessary. Once they're at Crewe they're on their way to being accepted.

197101 is showing as at Crewe ETD for the last couple of weeks. 110 has been out of use so long that it's location and last movement have disappeared. It's likely at Chester but has been out of use for several months.

I travelled on 197019 yesterday, which appeared to have had an upgrade to it's Passenger Information System. The display was showing inside and outside temperature and current speed among other things I haven't seen before. Unfortunately text had been changed to pale green on white background which was not very legible. The toilet indicator now marked as"PRM" which I think will be meaningless for most people. The toilet/ carriage indicator still uses the oversimplified rectangles with 'you are here' to represent carriages - that really does need upgrading. Took me multiple trips before I worked out what it was trying to show.

That sounds like a bug and is a very old version from when the units were in the test phase.
The lime green on white is almost invisible until close up. Not sure how ones gone back to that.

As long as the unit number and its lack of nameplate are both visible, would you mind taking away its full copyright and uploading it to Wikipedia Commons, with its date and time data in-tact? It's been added back, and Redrose64 is now insisting that, because they have the magazine right there...

and in column 3 paragraph 1 it definitely states:

Named
156424 The Yorkshire Dales Explorer
197125 The Cheltenham Spa Express
444040 The D-Day Story

that must mean that 197125 has that Cheltenham name, because obviously magazines are always correct (!)

What is somewhat concerning is how a train build that is fairly well established now, with 60 197s being delivered, and 195s and 196s, can be handed over with mods and repairs being required.

You would think that early units that arrived with issues would mean later builds can be improved before being delivered.

Most of them are minor things that have been done on the active fleet which are then rolled out across the rest of the fleet as they're accepted so they're upto date when they enter service.

AFAIK some of the ERTMS units had parts taken from them during a period of difficulty getting some spare parts too which wouldn't have helped, nor would the fact most have been stored in the open at Newport, Donnington and Crewe South Yard for a long time. Some of the earlier ones spent considerable periods of time in the workshops at Crewe being readied whereas the later ones do now seem much quicker so things do seem to have improved somewhat with the units now entering the final phase, and like you say so they should with the amount of vehicles of that family now running around the country.

I would do this, except that it seems a bit pointless to be honest. My experience of trying to adjust such things in Wikipedia is somewhat clouded by the fact that when I tried to get 66305 'Embsay & Bolton Abbey Steam Railway' added to the relevant table on the basis of my own photographs plus a lavishly illustrated social media post from the named railway, and a Youtube video recording the naming ceremony in August last year, none of these were considered admissible evidence either singly or as a whole. I had to be able to quote a magazine article. It's still not there.

There is an upgrade coming out in the future, but it isn't this. I believe the new screens will be black, red with white text. The samples they published internally looked significantly better than the current white, and the very simplistic square carriage diagrams should be gone too.

There are also a lot of features that can be utilised on the PIS system which arnt yet taken advantage of or fully understood. If a train was delayed and there was a reason published in the control log, the PIS screens onboard used to update to say "This train has been delayed due to X reason". A great idea in theory, but it would also show as delayed if say a Cardiff to Holyhead service was significantly delayed in the south, and restarted right time with a new unit at Chester, it would also show the delay message even on time. Another example is say a service was cancelled between Manchester Piccadilly and the Airport, and restarting it's return journey at Piccadilly, it would show "This train has been cancelled due to X reason", even though the cancelled part was before the start of the service and didn't affect the rest of the journey so it just caused confusion.

If catering was unavailable it would be logged with control as a service alteration. You'd then get the PIS screens saying "This train being delayed due a member of train crew being unavailable", despite the train being on time and simply being no trolley onboard.

Not sure if there are plans to bring this feature back, if it can be tweaked to work only where required to reduce confusion it would be a nice feature to have.
