Just landed at Edinburgh and no the best sight to have aggressive sale touts shouting Edinburgh City centre bus. Is touting aggressive legal?

Interesting. I got the Airlink to the airport on Wednesday, and getting off at Departures, several people tried to board for the city centre, desipite there being a Bright Bus in front and a member of Bright Bus staff standing on Stance E. The Airlink driver pointed them down to Stance A, but I did think Bright Bus must be doing a poor job if people leaving the airport right in front of their stance we’re still trying to board Airlink.

From what I gather, loadings during the day are sufficient to sustain, but some of the late night and early morning trips probably don't. The other immediate thought is that with the skyline brand being ditched at the next lot of service changes and the 200 and 400 reverting to regular service buses on the Lothian network, they'll be people who previously went into town for a cheap airport. Express that avoided the rather steep airport premium on Lothian who will no longer do so, speaking for myself, that is certainly the case. So unless I specifically want the city centre then McGill has lost a customer in me and no doubt others, probably more relevant to passengers on the 200 soon to be 17 but still
This makes sense the during day buses getting loads as the 2 workers for bright bus today standing effectively guide passengers and shouting at full voice bus to city centre. Obviously without touting can't fill there buses?

I think that's slightly unfair, the marketing spend on bright bus must be a quarter if that of what Lothian flag air link at and it's been around longer. I'm sure there's plenty of people who looked into it in advance of their trip and discovered that BB is an awful lot cheaper for virtually the same thing. And if you want a service that stops less, that's exactly what you're getting

Indeed, ‘touting’ seems to work well for Airlink with their small army of people, especially at Waverley Bridge, although they’re more about ‘encouraging’ people not to get on the Airport Express.
Virtually every open top bus tour operator in the world uses ticket sellers to encourage trade, even where there isn’t direct competition, and when you are providing services primarily aimed at visitors (like Airport services) it is a very sensible plan.

In an enhanced partnership between McGills and Flixbus, Airport Express is available to book via Flixbus for journeys after the 10th March. McGills seem to have forgotten to inform Flixbus of the reduced timetable, or Flix haven't put in the new timetable, as a number of the withdrawn journeys are still bookable when you check for dates after 24th March.

Massive down side of the Flixbus system though which won't help Airport Express, is that 'connections' are only offered if both stops share the same internal (internal at Flixbus) stop ID and so to book these tickets, you can only search Edinburgh Airport to Edinburgh. You can not have through tickets to the rest of the Flix network.

They've had two fare increases since they started, now £5 for a single compared to £5.50 on the 100. Lots of flights arrive after 9pm, but they never have a bus on stand to take advantage of the foot traffic as their timetables are so tight.

You'll find if you actually visit the Airport, the Airlink staff member (who is occasionally, less often than you think) at the stance at the Airlink drop offs it is to assist the alighting process, and I've never passed them campaigning like the very vocal Bright Bus staff! I'm at the Airport multiple times a week.

Perhaps UK North should enter the market for you all to see what aggressive touting is!

What is the advantage of booking via Flixbus? Are you tied to that specific bus?

I think all the Express coach operators have ‘add-ons’ operated by other companies that they offer through their websites, primarily aimed at those who are looking to book a long distance trip where the add-on may be the bit that persuades them to make that booking and avoids the need to go to another website. Convenience basically, as sometimes it won’t actually be any cheaper. Bear in mind most of their customers aren’t bus enthusiasts that know every service and who operates them!

The 'add-ons' make complete sense..... if the booking system was able to show the connections and book the through journey. I appreciate this is a Flixbus issue because of the flawed way in which their connections system works, but in terms of benefits for McGills, I really can't see it as people will have to book their normal Flixbus journey, pay for it, then go back into the search engine to search for the Airport journey separately.

Also wondering if there's something in the booking system to remind people that they want to look out for an orange bus rather than a bright green coach, possibly hindered by there being no service number while the 100 is also an airport express bus.

Whilst this may be more appropriate over in the FlixBus thread, but the benefit to the business providing the add-on is usually that it gets their product/service in front of a much wider audience through the host (provider of the main service). It’s a tried and tested method of doing business throughout the world, but I appreciate as this involves McGill’s some people like to find a problem.

The same type of Flixbus add-on also exists for First’s service 500 to Glasgow Airport.

Agree with you there, it's no different to Lothian using travel websites/airline bookings to sell vouchers alongside the flight for the 100 marketed as "airport transfer". I think the retailer adds a surcharge to what it would cost to buy from the driver/ticket seller.

I've been presented with a few of the Flixbus booking confirmations for the AIRX, and it could be a bit more obvious as if I recall correctly it just says "Airport express" and some people are confused about which of the two services to use.

I feel you are taking my comments the wrong way. All I am saying is that because of how the Flix systems works, the partnership won't work as well as it otherwise could. McGills isn't the first 3rd party route operator to suffer the flawed Flixbus booking engine, and I've raised it with Flixbus (and they are reluctant to sort it out despite it negatively affecting them, and a number of their other 3rd party operators such as Oxford Bus, Arriva and RailAir), so please don't think it's an attack on McGills. It was never my intention for it to look like an anti McGills post, and if it came across that way, I apologise.

The idea is good in theory, just the execution of it on the Flixbus system, isn't great. If you go on the Flix site and look for any destination (bar Edinburgh) to or from Edinburgh Airport, and it shows 'no results found'. The only time Bright Bus gets shown on any journey option, is if you specifically search 'Edinburgh' to 'Edinburgh Airport' or vice versa. Therefore it can't be an addon sale when you can't add it on to anything.

The same type of Flixbus add-on also exists for First’s service 500 to Glasgow Airport.
With the First 500 to Glasgow, there is a shared stop at Buchannan Bus Station and it was set up to use the same stop ID as the rest of the Flixbus services, so people could buy tickets from the Flix network to Glasgow Airport using the connection. It was an addon to your Flixbus ticket, journey plans shows through journeys, and passengers could purchase both Flix and the 500 fare in a single transaction. In terms of the Flix website and how their booking engine works, it's not an apples and apples comparison.

Very big difference in how their systems work. They are generally through dedicated Airport Transfer websites, or as a proper addon fare which all goes through the same transaction as the whatever else you were buying. Flix systems don't work like that.

Great idea from McGills, poor execution from Flixbus.

Quite a number of people waiting at stand E at the airport last night with return tickets for the Air Express, clearly no communication (until today, after the change) that the buses finished at 9pm. Poor effort, also it is now stopping at Drum Brae presumably as a last attempt to generate revenue.

I wonder how much longer it'll last? Surely it can't be making the revenue they want it to if they keep cutting the operating hours, raising the fares and trying to increase its catchment area. The stopping pattern is almost identical to the 100 now, albeit the AIRX additionally calls at Princes Street West and skips Wester Coates and Western Corner, and the fares are barely cheaper. I imagine McGill's are biding their time to see how the service performs in the summer.

That’s odd, as if you believe what you read on here, nobody uses it! :D

I also noticed an X10 or X10A in Glasgow last week which had scrolling text on the screen saying that there was a £1 short hop fare within the city centre.

Been doing it for well over a year now, there's stickers advertising it at the doors as well

Is there any truth to the rumour that Bright Bus is to be bought out by Big Bus? And if so what would that mean for the AirX?
