The Vice President has tweeted publicly that some staffer who last year wrote

"I was racist before it was cool" "I just want a eugenic immigration policy" "Normalise Indian hate"

- should be reinstated to a paid position at Musk's state-destroying agency, DOGE.

It's all going really well and the people who support this administration look like beacons of moral fortitude, don't they?

Time magazine is clearly trolling Trump, and he's clearly not happy! Stuff like this is ultimately what will get Trump to end his relationship with Elon.

(Video reporting on Time magazine putting Elon Musk on the cover sitting behind the resolute desk and Trump's reaction to being asked what he thinks about it).

Also covered in the following articles:

Tim Walz did similar recently by tweeting "Elon Musk is a terrible President."

They aren't even trying to hide it any more. I think it's time to give up on the USA and find a new leader of the free world.

I vote for Andorra.

Now the party of deregulation and "let businesses be free" want to prosecute businesses that have diversity hiring policies:
On Wednesday evening, newly installed Attorney General Pam Bondi sent staff in several divisions of the Department of Justice more than a dozen memos within a 15-minute span, laying out the agency’s new policies on issues ranging from reviving the death penalty, to targeting sanctuary cities, to enforcing a strict return-to-office policy.

One astonishing memo, seen by Slate, puts the DOJ at the center of President Donald Trump’s widespread efforts to destroy any traces of initiatives that would create inclusive and diverse workspaces, otherwise known as DEIA. The new memo claims that it will target private-sector diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility initiatives for potential “criminal investigation.

Surely even the most fervent MAGA believer can see that there's only the tiniest of steps between making a policy that says "we will hire all races" illegal and making a policy that says "we only hire white people" legal.

For occupations that have specific biological limitations, that's possible. But there is zero reason to believe that men are inherently better coders than women. Yet for some reason if I was to head down to the engineering end of the office more than 90% of the staff are male.

There may well be some instances where DEI has been used a justification for bad decisions - much like Health and Safety is used over here. But does the fact that some schools ban conkers on H&S grounds mean that all Health and Safety regulations should be abolished?
Typically, such "health and safety" issues are often actually insurance issues, but it is more appealing for companies to blame the government than their own choice of insurance policies. Similar to how the papers in University towns often have comment sections filled with "why is the council building more student accommodation instead of x", when in reality the council is building nothing, and a private investor is.

There are of course lots of parallels with this in the US, where blaming the actions of private organisations on the State is also common.

I do wonder if those who voted Trump, if things really do hit the pan come 2028, will really want to admit their own mistake? Unfortunately I think not, especially after Trump blatantly tried to steal the election in 2020, and was still able to convince voters that he is the victim in all this.

I ave wondered this myself, how do you rehabilitate these people to return to any semblance of normality?
Perhaps lessons from Germany are to be learned here, I mean, the rabid loony Nazis mustn't have just said 'Hitler's dead, oh well, lets think like rational, logical people now'

To be fair, and I do like to be fair, I personally think it was a wave of the hand, which was seen by a few to resemble a Nazi salute simply because it was Musk who made it. Turning it into something that it wasn’t. I saw the clip on the news this morning and if the reporter hadn’t mentioned a Nazi salute I wouldn’t have thought anything about it.

And you'd have thought Krystallnacht was just some high jinx by some teenagers out to rob some shops.

I was speculating with a friend today, and she pointed out: what if the Democrats choose to arm the large inner city ghettos?

Her proposal: fight Trump by legalising weapons in places like Baltimore, encourage minorities to arm themselves to the teeth, and then sit back and watch what happens. Would Trump be able to deal with the consequences of an armed minority population with some serious grudges against redneck white America?

I feel Trump has set in motion changes that will come in a few years time where he'll sign an executive order that will mean he will be able to serve a third term, during that third term, there'll be one that changes the USA to a functioning totalitarianist dictatorship where Trump can only be replaced by his progeny (god help us all)
What if under that situation, a 'liberal' state like California decides it wants to cede from the Union?
What if more 'blue' states join them?
I fancy there will be another civil was in the USA, and it'll be between all 50 states this time, not just 19.

It was no salute. He was grabbing his heart and flinging it to everybody (not literally of course) as per what he said in the seconds beforehand.

Then he'd have bent his arm, and had his hand palm upwards, as if he was releasing his heart to the audience, not palm down where it looks like he's dropping it to the floor

Its just reprehensible. Whatever your personal politics are, I fail to see how ANYONE could possibly defend this vile excuse for a human. I didnt think Trump could go any lower. I was wrong.

Don't worry, there's another 4 years of unplumbed depths he can reach

Since when does MAGA care about what the constitution says?

Only the Second Amendment

I mean of all of the Trump children, Ivanka would be more palpable.

To her father, yes, allegedly
(or was I thinking about palatable :D)

In fairness there were only 34 states when the war started so it'd have been tricky to have all 50 involved when 16 of them didn't exist yet in that form!

A split of the country with secession by the blue states, without a civil war, might be the best outcome to hope for if Trump really starts pushing the boundaries. However, the blue states subsidise the red states so the Republicans are unlikely to let them go.

Requires a constitutional amendment. Not to mention that the states run elections so only the most MAGA of MAGA secretaires of state would even consider putting him on the ballot.

Realistically, and I ask this in good faith, what can we realistically do? Trump has already demonstrated that he doesn't care what anyone else thinks and will storm ahead with whatever he has planned because nobody can stop him, so even if we in the UK had to choose between Europe and the Americans (in which case I would lean towards to the EU just because Trump has treated allies so poorly and already made the decision for us) there is very little we can do to sway him, especially when his opponents haven't been able to stop him getting re-elected despite everything they could throw at him (and in fact it's arguably empowered him).

I said when he announced the tariffs that every country involved should immediately sign free trade deals between each other that excludes as much US influence or goods as possible, cut the US cancer out of everything

This is what I often wonder. What is it that the US offers that other countries don't? Such that we're so afraid for our leaders to even question Trumps ethics.

In a nutshell, they spend more on defense than the next ten countries on the list combined. That large spending means that we don't have to. In the Western world only the USA, UK and France have nuclear weapons.

Go back forty or fifty years and they were also the technological and scientific leaders such that if you were frozen out of their orbit you would be left behind industrially speaking. This is less of a factor of late since they appear to now prefer teaching creationism and science denial instead.

Getting rid of DEI as far as he can.
Recognising only two sexes.
The Keeping Men out of Women's Sports was by far the best thing he's done.
When you've got Elite stars like Martina Navratilova, who trail-blazed for lesbians in sport and a donor and supporter of the Dems slating the Dems for failing women and girls, handing Trump an easy win, you know that the Dems are in a bad place.

Having a rather silly thought so please ignore if not to taste
Seeing as the "never Trump guy" JD Vance is now Trumps VP, that has got me thinking
How easy would it be for a progressive to pretend to be massively pro-Trump, then once in office having extremely progressive policies, disguised with right-wing buzzwords etc
How long would it take them to notice

Surprisingly easy, methinks. They don't seem to care about much besides profession of loyalty to the Dear Leader.

Ah! Thanks for the reminder - not sure how that one slipped my mind

That's what I was thinking. Nobody spoke about election fraud etc (to my knowledge) until he threw his teddies out of the pram over it.

They do that themselves. I needed to buy a Sheaffer ballpoint refill. It duly arrived,
printed “Made in China.”

We needed a repair for a U.S. wall-mounted ironing board. After much difficulty the very helpful chap in the (presumably proud) U.S. HQ said that he would have the bits sent directly from the factory. Yes (you’re ahead of me here) in China. Most efficient, but why all the whining now?

Trump has announced 25% tariffs on all aluminium and steel imports. I think we'll be okay though, as they use "a-loo-me-num", whereas we use "ah-luh-mi-nee-um".

Trump says he will impose 25% tariffs on all steel and aluminium imports

Donald Trump has just told reporters travelling with him on Air Force One that he will announce 25% tariffs on all steel and aluminium imports on Monday.

He also said that there would be an announcement on Tuesday about reciprocal tariffs on countries, but he did not specify which ones would be targeted.

"If they charge us, we charge them," Trump said.

Oh dear, he's really not endearing himself with the Canadians (some 40% of imports).

Feels like a repeat of 2018 except aluminium is 25 not 10%. I wonder if it will happen and if does there will be a deal made with Mexico/Canada. Think Canada is already working with the EU for a deal with aluminium to diversify.

Interesting times as we have Trudeau as Canadian PM until replaced with likely Carney.

and if it's not China, then it comes from Mexico, which of course Trump also hates.

I needed to poke around on a supplier's website for something else recently, and I noticed lots of stuff about the "Trade Agreements Act". Supposedly at some point the US created a law to require goods supplied to the US government to be substantially made / transformed in the US. One wonders how this is in compliance with USMCA (rebadged NAFTA), but it was amusing to see lots of language about how their special line of TAA compliant goods will be more expensive and has a longer lead time than the normal stuff. I also wonder how much of it still came from China/Mexico/etc and they did the bare minimum to be permitted to slap "made in USA" on it.

I see that is wittering on about Canada again - must be something to hide at home? What could it be this time? Could it be the USAID decision? Could it be birth right citizenship? Could it be the International Criminal Court?
It's all going really well and the people who support this administration look like beacons of moral fortitude, don't they?
They don't care. That's the game.

The MAGA people would quite like that.

People from minorities who voted Trump are going to be shocked- SHOCKED- when the leopards eat their face.

Offshoring everything has put a lot of people out of work. Those people are angry. Those people have been angry for 20 years or more, but Trump is the only one who has really tapped into that anger. The Democrats haven't, which is why the Democrats lost.

People don't want "free trade" if all that "free trade" means to them is that their job making widgets gets moved to Bangladesh/India/China/Thailand where Nike can pay some 6 year old kid ten cents an hour to make $200 trainers.

The two term limit is pretty recent, the Republicans (ironically) being the ones who pushed for it in 1947 after FDR won his fourth successive election.

The two term limit can't go away unless supporting members get a two thirds majority in both houses.
Or unless the Supreme Court find some esoteric reason as to why it doesn’t apply if the two terms aren’t consecutive.

Which I wouldn’t put past them tbh.
