How many years are we into the SWR 'franchise' now?

The amount of units still sporting SWT 'colours', both internally, and externally is ridiculous!

More often than not, I'm boarding SWR services that are still sporting SWR colours.

The 455s are ‘supposed’ to be being withdrawn within a couple of years, so aren’t being repainted.

The 458/5s are going to be either refurbed or scrapped so it makes no sense to repaint them.

Problem is, the long delay in getting the 701s into service means these units have to be kept for longer than expected.

Or indeed thank them, if that’s the reason they still retain their original, comfortable seats!
Apart from 1st Class I don't think the plan was to replace the seats, but I'm happy to be corrected.

The lack of charging points on trains used on such long journeys really is ridiculous.

Ah, I assumed it would’ve been Ironing Board time! I agree regarding the lack of sockets.

Personally I don't know why they couldn't have salvaged or used the Grammar IC3000 as used in the GW HSTs, Juniper FC or ScotRail (or Welsh and East Midlands) 158s. The lack of plug socket's however is my main bugbear with the fleet.

But is it? Why should the train company charge your devices because you’ve not properly prepared for the journey?
You cannot guarantee the sockets are working anyway so would be really stupid to depend on a third party providing a service and getting a seat to use the charger.

I appreciate its nice to have, but thats all it is

Oh here we go. Passengers are just an inconvenience and they should put up with what the railway wants to do.

Fortunately the railways are not run by this forum, otherwise there'd be no passengers left.

Remote / hybrid working; and Internet-dependent work on the commute.
VoIP calling / meetings on the go.
Audio/video entertainment on devices.

These (and their reliance on power supply) didn't exist when 158s started service in 1990 - but, typically, are expected by the general travelling public.

Possibly one for @WarrenTManager but I passed what appeared to be 444021 outside Northam this afternoon, oddly with cab vinyls stripped and the first two vehicles sitting on one new bogie per car. Do you happen to know what's happened to it?

444021 was involved in a particularly unpleasant fatality (not that there’s such a thing as a pleasant fatality)

Ah, that explains it, thank you. Yes, having dealt with several in my previous role, there certainly isn't.

What’s it in need of, cab front / lights assembly?
From what I've heard it was involved in a really bad collision (you can probably guess what type it was) which caused the entire headlight cluster to be pushed back into the body.
It'll probably need a bit more than lights assembly

It’s on a dedicated diagram that starts and ends at Fratton and stays together all day.
It's on 1P21 Waterloo - Portsmouth H today. I'll try seeing it on the south coast

I have a picture of it post incident (but cleaned up) but it’s not really suitable to post on here. The unit certainly sustained some damage.

I’m unsure on the work required to fix, but I’d heard that it’s expected to be fixed towards the end of October.

Are the outer cab fronts metal on those, or a fibreglass moulding?

They're aluminium, and in the past similar front end damage has run around plated off for quite some time waiting for the aluminium welders (because of the contract they are under with Siemens) Memory serves they need space at Eastleigh and specialists have come in the past over from Germany.

After some storms a few years ago there were two units which had their tree inflicted broken ends coupled. The windscreens were plated off and the middle cabs were oddly dark. Felt like they ran around for 6 months, but was probably less.

If it was “a really bad collision” the entire front end would be smashed in and it wouldn’t be in traffic, albeit boxed in.

I remember that as well, U.444002 was one of those units, had the secondmans side plated up for quite a while, believe U.444040 may well have been the other unit involved.

Just a gentle reminder that this thread is for the discussion of SWR Repaints and Refurbishments. If anyone wants to discuss anything else then they are welcome to start a new thread elsewhere.

Slighty off-topic but is this normal? Its giving me Clarke and Dawe - The Front Fell Off vibes!

Edit: I assume its related to the above but I didnt expect to see it out and about!
Looks like 444021 is back in service after a lengthy time at Northam

I assume it's been repaired now

Currently stopped at Northam Depot now I believe.
