Thanks to those who have taken the time to respond. Its a real shame NX don't have more regular services to places like Stoke but the reasons for them not opting to do so sadly make sense. Presumably its a similar reason as to why Derby and Chesterfield aren't served as much if at all en route to Leeds?

I remember once riding the old Service 538 (Coventry to Inverness I think) as far as Manchester when it was being duped. I went on the dupe which called in at Stoke en-route to Manchester. Seem to remember the on board loo being locked, being really desparate and having to wait until Stoke before the driver came and unlocked it.

How often do other coaches run on National Express services? I spotted YX64 WCM, a Volvo B11RT Plaxton Elite coach with Stagecoach Yorkshire, on the 560 at Golders Green. I assume that the coach is substituting for a faulty Caetano Levante.

Duplicates are fairly common, especially on Fridays and Sundays.

I used to get a coach from Nottingham to Leeds on a Friday evening around 7pm several times a year. There was almost always a duplicate which missed out the intermediate stops and didn't continue to Bradford, saving around 20 minutes and letting me get home an hour earlier. Often both the duplicate and original were full or nearly full.

A couple of times I've had a duplicate on the 465 to London which just ran Leeds to London with the disadvantage (for those not heading home )of arriving about an hour earlier.

As well as on dupes and event services, non-livery coaches can turn up as breakdown cover or because an operator has too many NX vehicles off-road for other reasons such as maintenance and accidents. As long as it is accessible in line with regulations.

There used to be a wide range of services which were regularly worked with non-National Express vehicles- mainly journeys that operated as extras at the weekend or which were seasonal only. However about 10-15 years ago they seemed to start to get phased out with the services concerned either being withdrawn or passing to more regular operators using full NX spec vehicles.

As far as known there very few if any such workings nowadays.

Interesting to see that's where one of Stagecoach East's (Bedford depot) former X5 coaches has landed up. I thought they were either sent up to Scotland for City Link services or to Plymouth for the Falcon a few years ago. Guess they are now surplus to requirement for those duties, hence appearing here with National Express.

Indeed you are correct, the 806 did go from Penzance to Aberdeen as I made that journey myself.

It was the longest route on the NX network at the time,( late 80's)

Travelling to Penzance from London Victoria on the 2330 overnight 404 arriving in Penzance about 8 am.

Leaving Penzance at 1320 and arriving at Aberdeen Guild Street bus station at 11 am the following morning.

I would then leave Aberdeen at 1800 the same day arriving back in Penzance at 1600 the next day.

Then catching the 2040 overnight 404 back to london Victoria arriving about 0630 the next morning.

What a great trip !
Wow I didn't know a service like that existed!!!

I'm guessing likely a Leyland Leopard or Leyland Tiger.

Which route did the 806 go via just out of curiosity?

According to the Driver of the coach on Facebook, the booked coach had a problem and needed an engineer whilst the spare Levante was found to have a nail sticking out the tyre. Hence the Elite being pressed into service as a last resort.

This one did go for use on Falcon but has been replaced by surplus Elite interdecks from Megabus

Why has there been this decline in services, I wonder ? Rail hasn't improved and is certainly not cheap..
I don't have much data available, but based on what I do have, rail has become relatively faster and the price gap between the two has got smaller.

Basing purely on recollections of journeys from the mid 1980's into the 1990's compared with today:

- in 1983 getting a daytime coach from London to Penzance plus paying to stay the night at the Youth Hostel there was approx half the cost of going seated on the Night Riviera, with a student railcard and booked weeks in advance. I just looked for fares for Fri 17th Feb (well ahead) and see seated on the Night Riviera with 16-25 railcard is £33, while the 08:30 coach is £23 and a YH bed is also £22, so today the coach + YH would cost 30% more than the overnight train, when in 1983 it was about half the price.

- from 1992 to 1998 I made numerous London - Middlesbrough journeys. I recall that the coach fare was about one-fifth of the cheapest rail fare available. The coach journey was timetabled as 4h50m and ran non-stop, apart from pulling into a service station and briefly stopping by the fuel pumps for a driver change. Looking now for journeys on the 10th Jan, the fastest non-overnight coach journey is now 6h20m, some take longer going via Leeds, and costs about £14, while the cheapest rail fare going is £33 for a 2h50m journey (faster than the train in 1992 when 3h15m - 3h30m was more common). So the coach fare is now 40% of the cheapest train fare, when it was about 20% before, and the coach is now slower while the train is faster.

Yes. Some of the advance rail fares now available are so much closer to the coach fares now being charged that it encourages switching from coach to rail. There has also been a considerable increase in railcards which now seem to cover a much wider section of the population in fact virtually ever market sector that coach normally attracts on cost grounds.

National Express is expected to cancel all services to/from West and South Wales and most services from Bristol from late tonight until around noon tomorrow due to Red weather warning of potentially dangerous wind speeds. Further details to be announced on website shortly and a mass email to passengers is imminent. Passengers can claim a refund or amend their ticket to a later date.

Just come back on the 22.30 509 London-Cardiff(Fri 6th Dec), having had day out in London, and first heard of anything, was when at Victoria Coach station, so think was lucky to be on last service of the night to Cardiff. We ended up Cardiff 10 mins early, after good run, the coach swayed bit in the wind but nothing too bad. Then had drive back home, was pretty wind to be honest but nothing unmanageable.

I last drove into Stoke in 2010.It was the overnight Birmingham,Wolverhampton ,Stoke service to Manchester .Back then beyond Wolverhampton you hardly picked anyone.

Not sure the times the old 422 (which was Burnley - London) was due in Stoke, but most passengers would have got the overnight 421, their was certainly more than a handful of passengers boarding & alighting everytime i went through Stoke on the 421.

Oxford could do with a service to the North East and Scotland by National Express considering Megabus aren't running there now.
I agree NX need to put more routes on otherwise Flixbus will get in first, unfortunately as a driver it's not my decision to make though

Is it not an argument though that FlixBus should become competitive to NX and ultimately a more reliable widespread network. Otherwise, NX will have a monopoly. They also both have different service methods.

NX are usually more direct services, FlixBus usually longer stopping in more places but cheaper.

Nice to have a National Express coach driver on here. If it was up to me, I'd bring back the once called mega-routes I'm aware of with cheaper fares and catering!

That's a very big generalisation I think it's somewhat 50/50. Flix has some more direct services (Swansea to Bristol Airport, Bristol to Yorkshire, Aberdeen to London) and some trips which can be faster than NatEx (such as Manchester fast buses). Flixbus also don't always stop at more places. Though where routes are compatible, Flix can sometimes have a longer scheduled journey time for some reason (look at Leicester to London for example, NX is quicker despite sometimes extra stops).

NatEx has lost its way. A NATIONAL Express should be serving far more stops than they are. Just look at Wales, they've mostly abandoned the country bar the M4 corridor. Scotland mostly ignored too bar Glasgow and Edinburgh. No links to Northern Ireland other than the 3rd party partnership with competitor Citylink. It's not a very national, National Express anymore.

Flixbus have a few cross country routes now but most expansion is on existing corridors.

A night service from Glasgow to Southampton like the M17 would be useful.

I agree there should be more stops than there are, I can understand some stops from pre Covid not returning as hardly anyone used them, but there are several stops we used to call at that were busy pre Covid that have no sign of returning

"National Express proposes a Transport Hub for Cheltenham"

What goes around comes around, but with no mass exodus at 2.30pm of Royal Blue, Midland Red, Yorkshire Traction, Black & White, etc though :)

"National Express proposes a Transport Hub for Cheltenham"

What goes around comes around, but with no mass exodus at 2.30pm of Royal Blue, Midland Red, Yorkshire Traction, Black & White, etc though :)

Hopefully Gloucestershire Council are planning to extend the opening hours from the current 6 days a week and actually have the toilets open after teatime. More than 10 minutes for pick up or drop off would be handy too.

I wonder if they will divert the 444/445 into the hub as well.

I'd have thought the 444/445 towards Gloucester would have had the Arle Court stop moved from the A40 bus stop, into the hub from day 1.

Would anyone by any chance be able to tell me on what date the 786 (Luton Airport to Cambridge) started operating, please? Possibly with the 4 december improvements, or earlier?
Thanks.
