It looks like the 379's are now being moved out of Worksop and into Peterborough sidings.

Thanks for your patience whilst your enquiry about the 379s was being investigated. I hope my email finds you well.
I’m contacting you today as I have spoken to the relevant department about when the 379s will come into service.
I can confirm that we have accepted all 30 class 379 units, and these are now on lease. We are now mobilising the supply
chain to get them ready for passenger service and will have a better sense of first introduction as that work continues.
The plan is for the first units to be used on peak time services from Peterborough to King’s Cross, most likely from the
December timetable.

These additional units will support extra services to meet increases in demand as well as support the release of some Class
387 trains, which can work with both overhead and third rail power, to support passenger services across the southeast.
However, we cannot be more specific than that at this stage.
I hope my email has answered your enquiry.
Thanks again for getting in touch. I hope you enjoy the rest of your week and weekend.
Kind regards

I bet long-distance commuters on the GN are really looking forward to the 379s. Are any mods being done to them such as new seat covers and USB sockets to bring them up-to-date/freshen them up?

Frustrating how secretive all this is, even in house. Doesnt seem to be much info out there at all, and i work for them!!

I expect they'll get the same upgrades as the 387s in time, like the new LCD displays, LED lighting and replacement 3 pin socket panels with two USB ports.

I assume the GWR 387s will be ahead of the queue though?

Leave the GWR units alone! :)

I find the interior on those rather nicer than those with the Southern interior, and part of that is they don’t have LED lighting.

Not sure GN commuters would be aware of anything afoot, as there hasn’t been much if any publicity.

Of greater concern will be reintroducing some of the remaining services lost thanks to Covid (which the 379s may support), and having enough drivers to actually run the timetable (for which the 379s may be a hindrance if it places a training burden on the already stretched rosters).

Would be nice if they put 700s and Aventra style screens in not the dot matrix
The dot matrix stays but they get LCD displays at the ends of the carriage to scroll through posters and other info. No actual service related information is given because the legacy display does that (otherwise it would likely require bigger upgrades in the cab).

PLEASE NOT MODS. Don’t let the DFT get to modify some good units!

Which is ridiculous given the original press releases were promoting the fact that there would live information of the current GTR service inc delays (not included on the dot matrix) and live TfL status (also not included on the dot matrix). The fact that they have become mere energy-inefficient posters is not just laughable, but illustrative of the railway's lack of ability to deliver.

The screens will display up-to-the minute GTR and London Underground service information.

Hopefully they will show this information one day, just as the 700s really should be doing too. And not just Tfl status messages like the 700s, but more detailed info and platform and train time info at interchanges.

The DfT usually needed to approve upgrades to things like this so maybe there's a chance in the future.

Agreed, all they need is the wifi fixing (currently they *still* have 'GWR Wifi' which, of course, doesn't work).

Quite annoying and energy-inefficient 'posters' too, with their endlessly cycling messages about how you need a ticket, how you'll be fined if you don't have a ticket, how forgetting your railcard is unacceptable, how not having any charge on your phone to show your ticket is unacceptable, how much better e-tickets are than paper...... It's just an endless collection of tedious nagging and nudging. I find anything on a screen moving in my peripheral vision incredibly annoying, especially if what is there is entirely useless, so nowadays I always try to sit somewhere that I can't see them.

I find them annoying because the constant change of colour and brightness makes them hard to ignore. I try to sit where they are not easily visible.

Given the layout of the carriages, I think the screens are pretty pointless as most people can't see them. If they had mounted new screens on the ceiling it would have been more logical, although the screens do have a high resolution to allow them to show engineering posters and other things.

I believe something is currently being worked on to have real time information of the service/tube status displayed on those screens but I haven’t heard any more since last year. No idea what’s holding it up, perhaps it’s waiting for the completion of Project Aurora? Currently the 377/6’s are going through it.

Yep i also class them as a pointless addition and expense. At least they dont flash every time they change screen now which was majorly annoying at first.

I see it all as yet another thing the railway has got wrong... the list is huge.

I would like to see the DfT make these screens show real time info as seen elsewhere around the world. They are all able to be updated over the air, so it's just building the software to pull the open data as required.

Even the Berlin subway trains manage it and with many more screens too, allowing everyone to see them.

There is currently one screen I've seen on them that shows the details of next 8 or so weekends of the seemingly-endless weekend engineering closures on GN, which would actually be quite useful except:

- Despite having about 100 times more text than all the other screens put together, it only stays on for the same amount of time as the others, so you can read about 2% of it before it flips to some propaganda about paper tickets being bad for the environment or something, and it doesn't come back for a few minutes, by which time you've forgotten to carry on looking and/or have forgotten which bits you already read.

- As it has about 100 times more text than all the other screens, the text is too small to read unless you're very near it.

- ...and of course there is usually someone sitting in the seat by it, so unless you're that person you can't actually go near to it...

Which makes the whole thing even more irritating - when you know there is one useful thing that you may actually want to know being displayed amongst the dozens of pointless nagging screens, but you can't actually usefully read the information it is trying to convey.
