Current track works in the city centre:

Shudehill and Market Street works

From Wednesday 24 July to Monday 19 August, work will take place close to Shudehill tram stop and, at the same time, Market Street tram stop. During this time, no trams will operate between Market Street and Shudehill.
A signed walking route will be put in place between the stops and a bus replacement service will operate between Piccadilly and Victoria. Customer wishing to travel to Piccadilly station, or on the Ashton line, will be able to connect to services at St Peter's Square. Find out more about the Shudehill and Market Street works

City centre works

On Sunday 4 August, there will be temporary changes to tram services from the start of service until 10am:
  • The Bury and Rochdale lines will terminate at Victoria
  • The Airport, Altrincham, East Didsbury, Eccles and Trafford Park lines will terminate outside the city centre, see below for more information.
  • There will be no tram service on the Ashton line
This closure is to allow for critical track works at Deansgate-Castlefield in addition to the works between Shudehill and Market Street and is necessary to ensure the network remains safe to operate.
Find out more about the city centre works

Victoria works

On Sunday 11 August, from the start of service until 10am, no trams will operate into Victoria alongside the works between Shudehill and Market Street.
The Rochdale and Bury line will terminate at Victoria until 10am. This is to allow the works on a pedestrian walkway between Corporation Street and Victoria.

Are there any works planned in the future to remove the current TSR over the Collyhurst Road bridge on the inbound line to Manchester?

It’s quite a significant defect so I can’t imagine it’ll be too long. Theres a lot of PWay work on at the moment (including an emergency possession at DCF on Sunday), so it’s just waiting its turn in the queue.

I see Metrolink are saying '5 weeks' to fix the issues caused by the landslip.

Is that 5 weeks from the suspension of services or from when the ground stopped moving? Any pencilled in dates for a reopening?

The replacement buses that operate between Victoria and Picadilly due to the works taking place close to Shudehill tram stop are currently suspended until further notice.

Ooh, is that going to be the first use of the terminating platform at Crumpsall? Every cloud...

Image of the rectification work underway between Shaw and Derker. Taken from the local Facebook group, date of photo unknown, but posted today, so presumably quite recent.

The value of the second city crossing on display. On Tuesday it would have had 30tph using it.

When I was there recently, there were additional running on the Altrincham line in the evening for a concert at old Trafford, which were all running to crumpsall after the Altrincham to bury directs would normally have finished

TfGM announced on 24th July that the rectification work between Shaw and Derker would take up to 5 weeks, so completed by the end of August in a worst case scenario.

There is no indication yet that this timescale won’t be realised, however should this overrun, it runs the danger of slipping into the dates of the closure of the railway between Rochdale and Manchester Victoria (6th-24th Sept).

I imagine that when the rail works were planned, Metrolink was envisaged as mitigating the disruption on heavy rail?

Fingers crossed the tram works are completed on schedule!

From weekly email "Travel Update"
Resumption of the Rochdale line

Tram services will start to operate between Oldham and Rochdale from Monday morning (19 August) following the completion of engineering works to make the track safe after a landslip affected the line.

Metrolink services on the section of track between Oldham Mumps and Rochdale town centre have been suspended since 10 July with a bus replacement service in place. The landslip caused the track to shift sideways and also affected overhead line poles.

The work, which has been carried out by Metrolink engineers and specialists has seen them move around 200 metres of track back into position using more than 100 tonnes of ballast as well as repairing the overhead poles.

Further work to make the line more resilient in the long term will be required over the next 12 to 24 months, and we will keep you up-to-date as dates are announced.

I took this photo of a tram in the bay platform at Shaw this afternoon, so clearly traversed the problematic section. Hopefully all good for the resumption of service on Monday.

I haven't been up with the thread, but thought I saw a tram when I was driving home over the line between Shaw and Derker last night, but wondered if I was seeing things

This morning there were 3 Metrolink vans and a number of the orange army around the Cop Road bridge - not sure what they were doing (and further made me wonder if I had seen things last night!)

Metrolink having a rough time this morning with pretty much every route suspended because of poor weather.

From the Bee Network Website:
Due to Storm Lilian bringing multiple trees down across the Metrolink Network we have several line suspensions.
More information and advice
The ONLY services currently operating are as follows: Rochdale Town Centre to Victoria Station Manchester Airport to Sale Water Park Trafford Centre to Wharfside and Eccles to MediaCityUK Passengers can use Metrolink tickets on All available local commercial bus services. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.

As metro systems go, it does seem to be one of the more vulnerable to sky related events, be it heat, cold, wind, rain etc.

Which are the nearest bus routes from Sale Water Park (mentioned on the Airport line) and where do they serve?

Not any buses anywhere near Sale Water Park tram stop without walking under the M60 motorway junction towards Sale Moor (hourly 18 bus to Eccles via Old Hall Road/Dane Road), so maybe better to alight instead at the next tram stop before (Northern Moor) where there's a more frequent bus provision along Northenden Road, including the three per hour 41 bus to Manchester. Sale Water Park transport stop is, however, a logical place to temporarily turn trams round though, as there are points between Sale Water Park and Northern Moor.

Thanks for that information. It would be advisable for TfGM to advise passengers accordingly about disembarking at the Northern Moor tram stop to make onward connections.

At least TfGM are making some sort of effort to tell people how to get where they need to be, even if the information is not terrifically detailed at this stage.

It's better than on the mainline, where Northern have fallen back on their old faithful "DO NOT TRAVEL", which is probably the best advice for some people but does nothing to help those who need to travel anyway.

One thing which is rather annoying is that the TfGM journey planner apparently doesn't know about service suspensions, which makes it rather unhelpful at the moment.

Appears with the early end of the Test Match on Saturday (England won!) and no play on Sunday; the additional Altrincham - Crumpsall service (09-21h) is not running today leaving the "normal" Sunday Altrincham - Etihad service every 15minutes
As is usual, no mention online asto this change in advertised operation

More engineering works on Metrolink, hopefully will put an end to a lot of speed restrictions we’ve seen recently. Hopefully they’ll tackle Deansgate area next, it’s painfully slow especially on a double set.

Piccadilly Gardens works

Tuesday 27 August to Monday 16 September

Delta Phase 2 Works Map

Network improvement works will take place from Tuesday 27 August until Monday 16 September (three weeks) on Mosley Street between St Peter’s Square, Piccadilly Gardens and Market Street.
During the works, there will be temporary changes to tram services on the Airport, Altrincham, Ashton, Bury, Eccles and Trafford Park lines:
  • Trams on the Altrincham and Bury lines will only operate Altrincham – Bury (via Exchange Square). To travel to Piccadilly, please change at Victoria onto trams towards Ashton.
  • Trams on the Ashton and Eccles lines will operate Ashton-under-Lyne – Crumpsall (via Piccadilly and Victoria) and Eccles – Deansgate-Castlefield (via MediaCityUK).
  • The MediaCityUK – Etihad Campus peak service will operate Victoria – Etihad Campus instead.
  • Trams on the Airport line will terminate at Deansgate-Castlefield and trams on the Trafford Park line will terminate at Cornbrook. Customers can change trams at these stops to travel into the city centre.
This closure is part of our programme of planned engineering works and is for essential track renewals on Mosley Street and at Piccadilly Gardens.
A dedicated bus service will replace trams between Deansgate-Castlefield and Piccadilly. All stops will remain open during the works and customers can interchange between tram services across the network to complete their journey. More information on replacement buses and travel advice is listed below.
See TfGM https://tfgm.com/tram-improvement-works/piccadilly-gardens-works

I must admit TfGM aren’t great at relaying information. The platform screens say ‘no trams between Picc Gardens and St P Square’, completely ignoring the fact that there aren’t trams from St P Square to Market Street either.

All of these engineering works are really proving the need to find a numbering system for routes beyond their end destination. You have to pay rather close attention to understand the nuance between ‘Altrincham to Bury line’ and ‘Altrincham and Bury lines’. I understand Metrolink benefits from such flexibility in contrast to strict tube lines but something like ‘trams from branch A will travel to branch B’ would clear things up a lot, but that’s been done to death on the speculative thread. If only someone from TfGM read this forum.
