What will happen if the express service finds itself behind a failed Class 230 stopping service?
Same as if a stopping service found itself behind a failed express service I would think.
Just like you have with TFW and WMT between Shrewsbury and Wolverhampton and then Avanti, LNER and Cross country between Wolves and New street.

To be fair it’s more likely to be what happens if the 230 gets stuck behind a 777. As much as I like them the battery units in particular are shockingly unreliable

If the 777’s could work all the way to Wrexham then what about the possibility of having an ‘express’ service and a stopper service? 777’s operating the express all the way through to liverpool and 230’s operating the stopper Just as far as Bidston.
I’m not sure how many stops it would be viable to cut out for the express service. It could also possible only go as far as general. Less stop and terminating at general would reduce demand on the battery.
The influential WBRUA (Wrexham-Bidston Rail Users' Association) have always been vehemently against any form of 'skipping' stops, thus providing a lesser service to some stations. I understand this is one contributory reason why the scheduled service has been padded out to allow recovery time, rather than skip-stopping (maybe alternately in one direction only, akin to Merseyrail's provision to Capenhurst) in order for a unit to complete a round trip in two hours, which could potentially have delivered a half-hourly frequency. Of course, this would also have required the 230s to deliver the performance and reliability any reasonable person could have expected.

Whether the WBRUA could be persuaded that an 'additional' service could be "semi-fast", is another, and somewhat moot, point.

But realistically, where's the sense? Without significant infrastructure work, a "fast" service cannot pass a "slow" one on this 27 mile line, so the best you could hope to achieve would be that end-to-end, and selected "important" (my choice of word) stop users would benefit by a few minutes whilst the others are left with the existing unsatisfactory (in WBRUA's view) arrangements.

Guess the half day swap is to check the pollen, etc, build up on the radiators, which with full hybrid operation, could be sorted soon with the battery upgrade?
I think it’s 2 fold, check the pollen filters but also to have the unit out of service before the batteries overheat.
I’m sure I saw they had planned an extra swap (so 2 swaps and 3 units) per day during the pollen season, and I seem to remember seeing on RTT 3 separate units but I can’t see it’s going on now, so maybe I dreamt it
The upgrade is to help cool the batteries that I’m aware of. I’m not sure if TFW plan to lose the engines and go for fast charging but it they did then you would, obviously, not need a radiator to cool the engine coolant.

It was indeed 2 swops per day a few weeks ago for the pollen season, which ever unit was out first was generally the one that came back out for the third stint. It seemed to work well but clearly isn't ideal.

The line is awful for pollen though, I worked one morning a few weeks ago during the 2 swop season. I was in the back cab leaving Bidston and saw clouds of smoke pouring out the 230 as we accelerated - immediately thought oh dear that's not good. After I stopped at Upton and noticed no smoke or funny smells, I observed out the back a bit closer and realised it was huge clouds of pollen being blown off the long grass in the cess. Something I have never seen before!

Needless to say the 230 behaved fine, but an hour or so later I was suffering with severe heyfever, eyes streaming and non stop sneezing! I don't get on with grass pollen at all!

Glad I’m not just going mad then haha !

Wow that’s quite something! My wife struggles at the first hint of grass pollen, dread to think what she would be like !

Hi, does anyone know where 230006 is, I've been looking for this unit for a few years now but have had no luck in tracing it's whereabouts.
Hello, appreciate this is a bit late but I only heard it today.
230006 is the first unit getting the battery cooling, radiator improvements and some other mods.
Don’t know when it is planned to be completed.

Makes sense; hadn't it become a parts donor? May as well rebuild it to a new standard if it's going to be rebuilt.

I had heard when the time came for them to be brought into service 006 was found to have a severe case of "diesel bug" and was quite contaminated, it's been used as a parts donor but has been noted as moving around the depot under its own power since then.

If as said above its being used to trial new modifications that would make sense!

No trains running between Wrexham and Bidston today due to signallers being unavailable. Buses will be running with disruption expected until 18:00

Just noticed on RTT that 230006 has run ECS to Wrexham General and back today (3F42). I hope that it's not a typo!
