In recent weeks almost every Airport Express bus I've seen has been busy, in a number of cases full and standing. As it's only May, I would expect that in July and August both Airlink and Brightbus will get plenty of passengers, hardly the 'fresh air express' the airport express was in early January.

Launching in January was possibly a flaw. January/February is always the quietest time for tourists. Having said that, it allows the service to build up a reputation prior to the busier season returning. I wouldn’t be surprised if we see an increase in vehicles soon. The Airlink is no less busy, so I assume the traffic is either new traffic, or is coming from the tram?

It wouldn't take many people switching from Airlink and the Tram to give the single-deck AIRX services the appearance being busy, I wouldn't think.

Which vehicles are spare? Looking at bustimes there are three additional E300s which could be painted and brought in. Are there any spare deckers which could be painted and brought in at short notice?
I suppose if they wanted to they could give the remaining B7TLs a cheap paint, use them this summer on the AIRX and then dispose of them after the season finishes?

That would but good but the LEZ introduction kills any plan of that. Not viable to upgrade emissions given their age.

There are a few examples available from Midland Bluebird. 3 currently in use (could all be replaced by StreetLites). I do believe 8496 might be Euro 5 though, it’s why First included it in the sale of the business anyway.

In I think the Enviro 300’s left are 8487-8494 and 8496. 3 of which are currently in use by Midland Bluebird. How many are actually usable is another question…

There are the Ex-Aberdeen Geminis which are Euro 6 and would be well suited. Albeit four vehicles isn't enough to cover the PVR.

One of those is already being repainted into the Midland Bluebird livery I saw it somewhere online but can’t remember where so I guess we can count these out.

Lets be fair, the tram and the Airlink were already overcrowded before Bright bus come along, the fact people couldn't see that was very puzzling.

I would think the likelihood will be to increase the PVR rather than have double deckers, especially once Livingston are finished with the tendered work, to keep drivers employed where possible.

I think they would increase the frequency first rather than bringing in deckers, much like they do with the City Tour during the summer. If the frequency was upped to every 10 mins with a 10 min layover at each end it would mean an extra 2 buses or if 15 mins layover like at present an extra 3 buses, as there is currently 10 Airport buses you would only need an extra 2 or 3 converted and repainted

I believe Lothian has a clause in their contract with the airport that all buses must be 3 years old or newer (although I assume they got dispensation to ignore that due to the pandemic) but I have seen Bright using buses that are from 2012. Does anyone know why Bright don't seem to have that requirement, yet Lothian does? I wonder if this means Lothian will ask to delete that clause...

I'd assume it's because the 100 is contracted to the airport, which Bright Bus isn't?

Coming back from Rome yesterday my connecting service from London Heathrow to Edinburgh was delayed and didn't arrive until 2320. I thought I was going to have to sting British Airways for a taxi to Falkirk until I remembered due to the festival the last service from Haymarket was 0020.

I caught a Bright Bus for the first time which was lightly loaded compared to the queues I saw for the Airlink 100 as we sailed past.

Didn't realise it has limited stops compared to the 100 and leaving at 2330 I just made the 2350 Haymarket to Falkirk High service.

Most impressive sub 20 mins from the Airport to Haymarket.

If I'd got the 100 it would have been the 0020 for sure.

Going into town from the airport. I would say that apart from in really heavy traffic, the airport Express trumps the 100 every time

At that time the 100 is around 16-20 minutes to Haymarket. The running time is 23/24 minutes at that time of day from Airport-Waverley.
Of note yesterday two Bright Bus airport vehicles broke down yesterday around 5pm - one at West Maitland St and one at Waverley Bridge. One was recovered around 1830 and the second at about 2200 by the same tow truck.

Yea a tad embarrassing. Breakdowns seem to a frequent occurrence for the Bright Bus fleet as a whole.

I reducing the age profile on the airport express fleet would be something they'd look to do if it keeps going. The big test for it will be to see how it survives. The winter

It started in the winter this year on New Year's Day don't see what difference it will make.

And yesterday, Friday, Lothian Airlink 1130 broke down on Shandwick Place. Eventually replaced by 1137.
Mechanical failure can happen to anyone.

I they presumably budgeted for losses as a new service and also still had drivers going spare after the closure of the West Lothian network. Where is now the only activities out of Livingston? Are the airport Express, the tours and the coaching operations. Any one of these factors or indeed several others could tip the balance this time round and it does go quiet in terms of airport usage from around the end of October until just before Christmas

Seems to happen way more with Bright Bus though. Granted they inherited rubbish buses from First, but if Bright Bus is to last in the long term, there’s no way the ADL stock will last. It was also McGill’s’ choice to put these knackered Enviro300’s on the route.

Continually strange loads on the AIRX as well. Either full or more or less empty. I can’t understand how it’s so varied compared to the Airlink.

As much as I’m not keen on McGill’s as a company I feel like it’s good that they decided to put on more routes to keep jobs for staff who would have otherwise lost their jobs. They will probably use the profit to cover the losses that they had on the West Lothian network and making their existing vehicles work for their money until they generate enough to invest in more.

In my opinion, if the X38 goes electric, I can see those E200MMCs going onto the Airport Express routes.

Yep. Well you do have to remember that the E300s on the Airport Express are now 11/12 years old. Most have been all over the place, at West Lothian, Midland Bluebird etc. They were all Glasgow buses beforehand, so they have had a fair amount of use.

At the moment there is a couple of E300s in the garage out of action for various reasons:

8479
8481
8495

8495 is in for a new engine, and 8479 and 8481 both broke down recently, but are being fixed.

So you’ll probably still get a few more years use out the E300s.

At the moment McGills don’t have sufficient stock to replace them anyway, but that could all change in the future.

They aren’t all ex First Glasgow some are ex First Borders.

The issue is the only viable alternatives in the McGill’s fleet would be the E200mmc’s, as suggested by someone else. Though in theory you’d think all the ones left in the west will eventually be Midland Bluebird bound after the west gets more Yutong’s at somepoint. For me Xplore Dundee letting go of the Eclipse2’s was daft and that would’ve allowed the E200mmc’s currently on the X38 to be used by Bright Bus instead, those Eclipse2’s instead doing the X38. I’m sure there was a bigger reason behind this though.

I can’t see how Bright Bus would ever be able to justify new stock and in any case McGill’s would want Electric stock if new. That’s expensive and goes against the whole principle of Bright Bus. So really second hand may be the only solution. Again I’d expect this to be E200mmc’s.

They’ll need more second hand stock to replace those E400’s anyway, as they too are past it, more so than the E300’s.

I have many criticisms of Stagecoach East Scotland, but the reliability of their E300s is not one of them.
As in, if Stagecoach can keep their E300s running reliability with their not-so-irregular standing ins on express X54s and X59s, then Bright Bus ought to be absolutely fine running theirs on airport shuttles.

The choice of what to use was limited given the LEZ. The E300s that they chose to use were converted to be Euro 6 back in the First days.

We will have to see what McGill's do eventually. Yes there are always cascades likely given electric buses but there is always a possibility that they may sell them instead. After all they recently just sold two E300s when they could have stayed put to get more unreliable Streetlites off the road, plus what was mentioned about the B7RLEs from Dundee. Rather than keep them in the fleet, they went down south instead.
