You can still buy a pre owned paper test book on eBay for few pounds.
Alternatively there are free PDF sheet to download from the web and then print them out.
That could give you a better idea how the test is like in a paper format and put your mind at rest.

Regardless your aspiration to become a driver I would get this issue asap properly checked by a professional optician.

Hi All,

I'm asking this as a last minute push, just in case anyone may have experienced, or know someone who has experienced this.

So I applied for a recent TM Vacancy, and was blessed to be shortlisted for the Assessment. I logged in using the details emailed to me, and began going through each Test. First one was fine, as was the second one. I decided to take a quick break, and when I returned, my PC had reset itself, unbeknown to me it was a "scheduled update". When I went to log back in to my Assessment, a Box comes up and says "There are no Tests assigned to you".

I went back to look at the email, and it states that once you've completed the Tests (which I haven't yet obviously), I will not be able to log back in. I have emailed TfW several times over the past few days, but with no reply. The deadline to submit the Tests are by 2100 (29th May 2024). I'm assuming that TfW will need to send me a new Code to either carry on from where I left off, or.. Restart again?

Thoughts?

When you say "Restart again", are you even able to do that? I thought you had no tests assigned?

Yes, I hope so. By Restart, I mean, do the Test again with a new Access Code. It's the Access Code which is the Issue. Currently, I can't gain access because the one I was given, won't allow me to get back in. Whereas I would assume that with a new one, I'll be able to do that?

I have just had the news of passing my DMI for West Midlands railway. I am really worried for my medical I have Rheumatoid Arthiritis, and have had this for nearly 4 years. However I am taking 40mg methotrexate orally once a week and hydroxychloroquine 7 days a week. I play footbal and go to the gym 3 times a week. I also sit for long periods of time in my current job with no problems. Does anybody have any similar medical problems and passed their medical. I’m really worried that I’ve come this far and I will get dropped at the medical stage.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

ive done a few tests online of different types and tend to be fine mostly (such as the enchroma test). ive done several of the online ishihara tests and im again mostly ok but there seems to be dependencies with the different website tests. some i have no problem throughout and see straight away but some are quite difficult (maybe a worse quality image and a lot of brighter tones). I guess ill see what happens at the medical on a paper test rather than a screen

@blue_castle1 I’ve just seen this so it might be a bit late for you but…. I don’t work in the rail industry but I do have an unrestricted pilot licence (flying at night or on instruments is not allowed with a colour deficiency, ruling out a commercial career). I too sometimes need time for the Ishihara for red/green. What I have found over the years is that I can do them with no problem at all in natural light, but find them more challenging in a room that is artificially illuminated - this is the only consistent characteristic I can attribute to the variations in my ability to complete the test rapidly. I have discussed this at length with qualified people and opinion seems to vary as to whether lighting conditions could affect the test. In reality I suspect no one wants to imply that Ishihara is anything other than totally reliable and consistent. But knowing a little about colour management from my photography hobby, I do wonder whether the colour temperature of the lighting can affect a person’s ability to see the numbers, albeit maybe only in marginal cases where the candidate does indeed have a [very] minor colour deficiency - which I now accept I have. Nevertheless with flying once you pass you’re not tested again and are set for life - which is what I did - even though I know if I was to be tested again I might find it challenging under certain conditions. I didn’t need it but thankfully the CAA are more pragmatic than the rail industry when it comes to colour vision and accepts results from alternative tests for those who can’t pass Ishihara.

A driver I used to work with had this condition, he was able to work ok with it. Obviously I can’t say what individual TOC’s do but it shouldn’t be an issue as long as you don’t have any major side effects from the medication.

I failed on this also. I didn’t have the most up-to-date practice material which probably didn’t help. I’m due to resit mine next week and have a pretty much identical test that I’ve been practicing on the laptop. Might be worth investing in one for your resit? Don’t get me wrong, my test results have been fluctuating between 50 & 90% but will just hope for the best on the day. I’ve found it useful to say what I see in my head because then I’m not wondering if I maybe saw something.

How did the resit go?

I’ve got mine next week and this is the one I’m most worried about. I purchased software for the AVAFT and WAFV, I’ve been practicing both, but like you, my results have fluctuated when practising

However they may also run a campaign for X number of vacancies and they may have X+Y candidates who meet the standard and Y becomes a talent pool.

Hello. Can someone please send me the medical questionnaire form you get asked to fill in before going for a Driver Medical? Thank you.

I’m not going to share this as it isn’t really a great thing to do. However you will have it emailed to you with your medical appointment confirmation. And if it puts your mind at ease, there is nothing on that sheet that will make you any more or less confident whatsoever. Patience is key here as the process can take a long time. I received my offer 2 weeks ago and still have 3 months before my start date. It is a long process but well worth it. And to anyone worried about footwear on assessment days, they do not care at all! As long as you look well presented enough you are fine. The assessment centre day is actually quite relaxed, just expect the unexpected and you will do well. Remember it’s not a test, it’s just to get an idea of character and introduce you to the interesting challenges of the real world.

To anyone joining the apprenticeship program this year - I wish you all the best and will hopefully see you in August!

I failed on my cables and dials test (TRP2) earlier this year with Northern and I have a few questions about the instructions as I can’t remember it specifically. I just want to practice as much as I can so I can hopefully pass it next time.

There was 4 dials, (heat, air, power & light) and there was 4 colour groups from light blue to dark blue with numbers.

For anyone that’s done the test, did you have to put the dials in order of colour i.e if light blue was high priority - put that first and dark blue as least priority?
If two dials were in the same colour segment, refer to the number the dial is pointing at i.e for the highest number as first priority?

P.S I appreciate that they’ll be many different tests and the instructions in mine might be different to somebody else’s but I’m just interested to know.

You follow the colour priority key that's given on the day. It might go like: Black - Priority 1, Grey - Priority 2, Light Blue - Priority 3 and White - Priority 4

If the needle is in the same colour quadrant for two or more dials then you order the dials in question by order of the lowest value.

You only need to work out 3 dials to find the answer, don't waste time ordering the 4th if that's not already obvious.

No it shouldn’t. If you get to the medical stage you can just declare it on the questionnaire and it will then be discussed accordingly - including any medication taken. It certainly doesn’t automatically prevent you becoming a train driver.

Don't worry about it I'm guessing it'll be similar standards to the medical I completed to get into the police.

I am not sure exactly, but I feel like it's fairly generous - I think 6/12. If you have glasses, be sure to bring them!

Perfect thankyou, I will definitely take my glasses. Pretty sure I can see 6/12 without aswell so should be absolutely fine.
