Exactly. And even highly competent drivers should have NO experience of estimating what a plonker shooting along at those speeds looks like in their mirror. Or even the startling effect on concentration of being overtaken by someone doing twice their speed when they are at the limit. If you truly are "professionally trained", then I would have though the most professional way to drive is within the law.

Well you are trained to push-pull the steering wheel yet that is the first thing that advanced driving teaches you not to do.

On a speed awareness course, they showed me a video of a 1988 car skidding and hitting a child. Good to see that the powers that be are on the pulse with car design and features.

Ah, so you're trolling...

not at all, I am telling you the truth and your responses are making me laugh.

I could've abstained but hey, I know there are plenty on here who would take offence at my actions so I enjoy watching the responses.

I have lots of controversial opinions about all sorts of stuff, but I live a rich and fulfilling life so I am comfortable with it.

maybe you would like to talk about climate change or ethically sourced sandwiches?! :D

I wonder if Alex has anything to say about his driving? (the only other one to vote the same as me)

Two identical cars, one doing 80mph, the second doing 120mph. Both perform an emergency stop at the same time.
What speed is the second car travelling by the time the first one has stopped?

It's due to people like j0hn0 that we need driverless cars. Removing human control will be much safer.

When I got my first car (VW Golf) I once got up to 110mph on the A1(M). I've got a Passat CC now and the highest I've ever taken that one up to is around 100. I drive at about 70-80 on the motorway now, going overly quickly is just too unhealthy when you get to the petrol pump!

Hysterical claptrap such as how fast you drive on the motorway for example.
Of course we have no proof you actually do, you could just be willy waving.
But hey if thats what floats your boat nothing anyone here says is going to stop you, hell even getting caught and banned didn't. Carry on with your rich and fullfilling life and being controversial if thats what you enjoy

And sometime, justice will be done, and I for one will relish the time when he has to get the bus.

I'm not sure he would be getting than many buses though. Repeatedly speeding at over 100 mph could result in jail.

Alternative fuel is the future, not driverless cars.

Having read through, I'd argue both are.

To those countering Zoes point on the 'computers can't be as good as humans', you're assuming technology and road conditions won't advance. Both will change, technology immeasurably. Separate pavements and roads physically, and you have a safe environment. How long you'd be talking timescale here I have no idea! But I think it will happen.

Not sure on the fuel front, I still think nuclear is the way forward on industrial scale, and would have said Orbo technology on small scale but not quite sure at the moment!

And once this is done I think most will agree that human control of cars should be banned. If you want to drive you can always go to a track and drive there.

as if? Besides, it happened years ago so been there, done that

and confidence

already did, was banned years ago for doing 117mph late at night when dry with no-one on the roads. I have no problem with this, If I get caught, its a fair cop guv.

I actually find that driving at 50 - 70 mph is MORE dangerous on the motorway than 70 -100mph. Why? because mingling with the numpties/grandparents/fearful actually creates more incidents, some of the manoeuvres I have seen beggars belief, so I stay away from it.

But please, keep em coming if you can ;)

I agree with a lot of j0hn0 is saying. I prefer driving fast, and I am a fast driver by nature. Part of the reason is a distrust of other drivers, and having been shafted by crap driving one too many times! However I'm also poor so stick to 70 or below on the motorway!

Confidence has a lot to do with it; I can say that those people I know who are unconfident drivers who stick ~70 and all other speed limits are worse drivers and more of a risk to others on the road and around them than other people I know who will usually drive on the upper side of the speed limits.

Yes - I agree.

I think that separating roads and pavements would be nigh on impossible, because we've developed the infrastructure we have over hundreds of years. People also walk down roads - I'm guilty of it, where there isn't a pavement, and people will not give that up easily.
Theoretically I think that driverless cars, and separation, is possible, but as soon as you add in the human element I don't think it would happen.
Alternative fuels and nuclear is what we should be focussing our efforts on - those are the future.

not often that I get on Motorways (nearest is Exeter), but stick in lane 2, steady 80...
Rather catch the train, driving has always been a 'chore' to me...

No really j0hn0, arrogance. I am definately not the sort of driver who sits in the middle lane of a motorway doing 60 and thinks it's safe. Exceeding the speed limit is not dangerous by it's self, but it is unsafe when done in the wrong situation. What you have described is unsafe and the fact that you don't realise that is even more unsafe. In fact, your attitude is almost exactly the same as displayed by the motorist who killed 10 innocent men including my Dad.
Am also interested by your comment 'yep tell that to the train drivers'. What do you mean by that?

I usually do 80mph if traffic permits. I had a BMW M3 right up my backside when doing 80mph on the M50 (must have read the back of my car) so when I'd finished overtaking I moved back into lane 1 and Mr M3 zoomed off into the distance at god knows what speed only to be taken out by a lorry moving from lane 1 to lane 2 who was overtaking (I saw the lorry indicate and move out slowly, Mr M3 must have been looking in his rear view mirror so didn't spot him)

Think he's meaning driverless trains.

It's OK mate, I figured that was what he was talking about but I am interested in what it has to do with this thread (other than trying to make a dig at the drivers on this site?)

It's probably on the same level as driverless cars. What happens when it goes wrong (which it would).

That's why you would have several computers in each car, if one has a fault and doesn't agree with the rest then it can be voted out by the remaining computers.

What happens if it's the "brake, we're heading for a bridge parapet at 69 MPH" computer thats out voted by the others.

117 late at night?! You should have been banned permanently!

I concur. It's wholly unacceptable, and you should hang your head in shame. Although earlier I did voice my support for 80mph speed limits in some cases, that doesn't mean that I support unacceptable speed. 117 is wholly unacceptable on any road.

I actually find that driving at 50 - 70 mph is MORE dangerous on the motorway than 70 -100mph. Why? because mingling with the numpties/grandparents/fearful actually creates more incidents, some of the manoeuvres I have seen beggars belief, so I stay away from it.

The dangerous manoeuvres come from those at both extremes in my experience. The dangerously slow (the "numpties/grandparents/fearful that you talk about), and the morons, white van men, and taxi drivers who assume that they can drive at all speeds. They're the ones who employ the dangerous, last minute overtaking manoeuvres, show absolutely no respect for other road users, and hog the middle and fast lanes because they think they're above the law.
