There's a shortage of a certain specialist part that's causing the 197 engine isolations. Many of them have padlocks on the isolation switches to ensure they're not used. A 3 car will keep to time on 2 engines quite happily however.

There seems to be a few problems with the 197s today - it appears 197120 was on a Milford to Manchester but cancelled from Cardiff Central due to a problem with the train. It appears 197116 took over from Cardiff despite RTT saying it was cancelled.
197116 ran as 1Z60, so left Cardiff on time at 1355 before 197120 arrived 27 late

197113 showing in service working 1005 Crewe-Llandudno today.
Which, if remaining on diagram, should finish off of 1D41 in Holyhead at 0018 I believe, so could well be going down to Cardiff via the Marches tomorrow as well.

Currently on 197002 and it’s absolutely roasting on here. I’m wearing a T-shirt no jumper. It’s not even hot outside today. I hope this is ‘faulty AC’ and not how it’s intended to work.

Edit: just wanted to add, that you nice we got moving I seemed to feel a bit of a cool breeze and I cooled off nicely. Still a bit warm by my liking but acceptable for sure.
I probably should know but it’s not something I seem to remember being told. Does the AC not do anything whilst the doors are released to avoid overworking itself ? Or something Similar?

To give some context from the driver's side: there are a lot of aircon faults going on at the moment - on the TCMS we have a HVAC page to view the status, and often (without any fault being raised in the station tab, for ref this is the page that lists all faults) the icon for the saloon HVAC units turns red, meaning it's encountered an error.

It is possible for the more twigged on drivers to turn the saloon HVAC off and on again from the TCMS, which I've done a few times when I've noticed this happening - no idea if it actually fixes the issue but the status colour for the HVAC units stays blue after doing this. Watching it though I can often see that in one unit the temperature stays more where it should be, while the one that had the faulty unit doesn't reduce temperature - which to me says turning the HVAC off and on doesn't really fix anything.

Interestingly I've also seen faults with the cab heaters getting stuck on recently as well, was continuously blowing hot air with the air con then on as well trying to fight against it... had two cabs in the same day doing this. Only solution here is to trip out the cab heating MCB, with permission from maintenance control of course. Does mean you have no heating, only HVAC, which is fine on hot days though.

It does make me wonder if the recent software update that's being applied to the 197s is causing a few unexpected issues, as there are other issues as well like not being able to put the train into coupling mode when uncoupling, which makes reversing off to the 2ft distance more difficult as you don't have the power limited (which is all coupling mode does really, limits max speed and power output - after pressing the uncouple button it should be available to use even though you're not coupling up, just to control your speed).
Thanks for the very detailed explanation from a driver's perspective. I suppose it is a good thing that there are faults occurring with the HVAC system, rather than it functioning as designed with ridiculous temperatures. Hopefully TfW / CAF can get on top of whatever is causing the faults, whether it is software, electronics, sensors or something else.

Wow its been rather quick these last few days!
Yes! Looks like 197114 shouldn't be too far off either, it's had the plastic seat protectors removed which is normally a sign that acceptance is near.

Believe its down to 6 3 cars to be accepted now, 114/119/121/123/124/126, hopefully the last 2 car on the Marches is very near!

That’s fantastic.
Really coming along nicely!
It will be interesting to see how long the ERTMS ones take once all the 3 cars are in service. I don’t see it being this year like TFW had wanted but early to mid next year Could be a possibility.

It will be interesting to see what happens with the Acceptance of the ERTMS units. Wouldn't be suprised to see them accepted straight after the 3 Cars are finished even if theyre not used straight away on the Cambrian. Difficult to see CAF disbanding the Acceptance team and programme to then have to start it again. Presumably they also aren't being paid for them until Acceptance is completed either.

Yes that would certainly seem likely. CAF are going to be taking over Machynlleth depot to some extent (whilst all TFW Staff there will remains under TFW and employed at the depot) and I imagine TFW want to get rid of the 158’s so perhaps we will see something start to happen as it seems like it would suit everyone.

Great to see more acceptances, hopefully it is not long until there are no more 2-car services to Manchester. The 05:39 from Cardiff this morning was very full after Shrewsbury and whilst it may be low on the list for 3-car, hopefully as the others become 5 we will be seeing more capacity on 1W12.

Passing Crewe it seemed 123 has been grafitti covered. That is presumably covered above but is the first time I saw it in the flesh. Seemed to be attached to another 197/1 as well. Both were moving slowly towards Crewe station as 1W12 was arriving.

Awesome! Heads straight to Cardiff tonight! Good to see so many entering service after a long break!

Hopefully in the next few days, would be great if it appeared tomorrow to have 3 new 197s appear over 3 days time!

With 117 or 016?

I’m not sure which I’m afraid. It could even be both, given they haven’t split it to at least run it with one of the pair. It’s reinstated from Chester with 019, solo. Nothing showing for 117 & 016 for the rest of the day at the minute other than stabled at Holyhead! :|

117 reported to not have the holes in the floor for the access ramp and hence why it was taken out of service. I’m surprised, given that it’s coupled up to 016 that it couldn’t have worked the service back to Chester with 016 and 019 going forward together.

Shame it couldn’t have made it to Cardiff before someone realised

Ahh well, that seems that is an issue but isn’t the reason both units are OOS. Driver reported that they were having issues with the ARG not working. Then the plan was to run just 016 but they couldn’t separate the units and the delay became so much that it was just cancelled as the next holyhead to Birmingham had then also been delayed because of it.
It seems 019 was pulled off of the liverpools to provide the unit.

Also 004 was pulled off the other liverpool diagram as it needed an inspection after hitting a tree last night. The inspection should have been done last night but didn’t happen for whatever reason.

197117 is back out again and is back onto the exact same diagram as before, ending up at Cardiff again with 197016.

158840 replaced 197004 on the Liverpool service this morning. A nice comfortable unit. With 197019 being talen away the main peak hour service at 1747 from Lime Street to Wrexham General was cancelled leaving commuters to Frodsham and Helsby stranded.
Inote that some Manchester Airport to Llandudno being short formed with only two carriages the question is where are all the 197s? In South Wales I assume!

In South Wales I assume!
A bunch have been okay for a good while down South, a few are trapped in Chester depot due to their own problems, a vast majority of 197s are being taken south for Milford, Carmarthen, Maesteg, Ebbw Vale and more, including a fair few 197/1s! :|

Any reason you assume that ?
To be fair, Holyhead Cardiff, Manchester Carmarthen, Cardiff Milford, Maesteg Cheltenham, Ebbw Vale Cardiff, Cardiff Fishguard and even Ebbw Vale Newport are using them, so it does make sense to think they’d be on those routes if not on Manchester Chester.

117 solo from Chester. It was inevitable one unit would have to come off as 1V66 is booked Chester-Crewe-Shrewsbury of which 5 cars can’t operate yet.
