Trying to work something out:

1. Woking to Waterloo annual travelcard season z1-6 £4832

2. Woking to Surbiton annual travelcard season z1-6 £3188

Surbiton is in zone 6, and all trains to Woking pass through it (but not all stop there)

Any reason I cannot option 2 above to travel Woking to Waterloo? Seems to me all parts of journey valid, and option 1 is just paying twice for the part from Surbiton to Waterloo.

Thanks

Option 2 only covers Woking to Zones 5 and 6, so you wouldn't have a valid ticket for Zones 1 to 4.

There is no such thing as as Woking to Waterloo z1-6 Travelcard. It is an outboundary Travelcard from Woking to the zonal Boundary and then you need to pay for all the zones you travel through. Waterloo is in zone 1 so you need a Woking to z1-6 Travelcard to get to Waterloo if you also want the Travelcard (train-tube-bus) validity - that's the £4832 one. If you just want to get to Waterloo than a Woking - London Terminals season (annual cost £3880) will do it.
The £3188 you quote is for Woking to Travelcard Zones 5 and 6 only. Not valid to get anywhere near Waterloo.

You are misreading it, that is general info, covering virtually all stations and the operators listed, and it says Travelcard covers multi-mode, not a season ticket

Doesn't mean you can buy any season ticket or travelcard and automatically get all stations and all zones and all operators.

The fare search works correctly but the generic validity text doesn't make clear that the Travelcard zonal availability only covers the zones purchased (i.e. it's arguably incorrect). In practice you won't succeed in using a Woking - Z5-6 to commute to London unless you want to risk a lot more than the difference in fares in legal fees to challenge the error.

it's a badly written sentence.

The key bit is "London bus services within Fare Zones 1-6".

Any Travelcard for any zone combination is indeed valid on buses across the whole of London (but not other modes).

The bit about buses needs to be a separate sentence to avoid confusion.

It's certainly badly written but I don't agree with your interpretation of what it's trying to say. The words "throughout London" indicate to me that the zonal validity covers all zones. It's been written by someone overlooking the possibility of Travelcards season for just the outer zones.
