Something being described as ‘sobering reading’. If you aren’t sober you are probably unable to read as your eyes won’t focus and you brain has been reduced to complete and utter ygoknsqlud.

Probably not a minor irritation more of a major one…….. Electric Toasters……

Surely as far as electrical home appliances go, an electric toaster is fairly simple? If so, then why are so few capable of successfully completing the task they are made for?

First problem, and this is really a basic easily sorted problem, the slots generally aren’t big enough. The bread doesn’t fit without trimming off the crust. My other hobby is photography. No matter which SD Card I buy, whatever capacity, whatever speed, at least they all fit in the camera. Why can’t bread fit in the toaster.

Secondly the evenness of toasting. One side cremated, one side raw. We have a newish Breville toaster. I set the timer to lightly toast then when it pops up flip the bread over and toast again.

After reading reviews I’ve decided to ‘splash out’ and buy a Dualit toaster, the Rolls Royce of toasters apparently. If it does what it’s made to do I’ll be happy, but surely even basic toasters should be able to toast bread…..

Yes! This irritates me too, my guess is other countries have smaller sliced bread than in Britain and most toasters are designed for those markets.

I think you have a duff toaster there. Our cheapo toaster cooks relatively evenly both sides in all 4 slots.

Then you've got the hotel style ones with conveyer belts that you put the bread through once and its barely toasted and you put it through again and its completely burnt ;)

The fun starts with those when a guest sets the speed to what they want.

I hate those toasters. Bread needs two trips though it, to give it some colour resembling toast.

Bit of artistic licence when I said cremated & raw, but in reality well done vs lightly done. Still way off being evenly toasted.
As well as considering the £60-70 Duolit toaster I've also thought of the basic Argos Cookworks toaster for £14. Can't be worse than the Breville and hopefully better. Just need look at the size of the slots.
Note: Only need a 2-slot toaster.

I'd agree.

This, below, is the one we have ( image below shows a Russell Hobbs 4 slot toaster priced at £46.99 at Robert Dyas ) and it toasts evenly and also accepts UK sized bread ( Kingsmill white medium sliced, which is one of the taller ones ) without having to trim it in any way.

There needs to be an ISO standard for bread size to save me having to either cram it in or turn it halfway through.

Personally I'd just ban toast... I'm not sure how it was invented, but I assume the thought process was something like:

"this bread is quite tasty, but I'd much rather it scratched the corners and inside of my mouth while I ate it..."

It was invented a receptacle for jam and marmalade :D

Spreading them on untoasted bread just doesn't give the same culinary experience.

... or as a way of using stale bread. Although once coated with jam/marmelade, they act as a good inverse spirit level! ;)

How can you want to ban toast? What kind of depravity is this? If you banned toast most geeks would starve.

Can there be an exemption, so long as said toast is covered in baked beens or spaghetti hoops ?

Fair enough, I'll grant that... not sure about the spaghetti hoops though, nobody over the age of 10 should be eating those!

I have them on toast and I'm over 40 (easier to distribute evenly across the toast than tinned spaghetti).

Web forum search functions where the default sort order is 'relevance' or 'best match' - because you can absolutely guarantee they never are. Defaulting to date order would be far more useful.

I'm not picking specifically on this forum, most others are the same too.

And then when you switch to “advanced” in order to get date order you have to re-enter your search argument. Yes, that’s me too!

If you told anyone here in Italy that you can buy spaghetti in a can in the UK they just wouldn't believe you!

I'm sure that they would be shocked.

Whatever you do, don't mention the tinned ravioli !

You know you can get tinned haggis .......
I don't eat it with toast though - only tinned plum tomatoes. :D
