India and Nigeria are the scam capitals of the world.
Despite popular perception, when it comes to phishing email scams neither is in the top ten:
Analyzing geolocation and network infrastructure across over two billion emails from its Threat Spotlight data, the researchers calculated the quantity of phishing emails as an overall percentage of total messages sent from regions throughout the globe.

It was discovered that the five countries with the highest proportion of phishing attacks from emails sent were all from Eastern Europe. In descending order, they were: Lithuania, Latvia, Serbia, Ukraine and Russia.

The next countries in the list were from the Americas and Asia: Bahamas, Puerto Rico, Colombia, Iran, Palestine and Kazakhstan.

When it comes to phone calls, India is in the lead but many of the scams originate from otherwise-reputable BPO companies so blocking them is problematic at best.

I would point out that this is a proportion of e-mails sent from a country, not an absolute number. The larger the country, the larger the total number of e-mails sent and so the larger the number of phishing ones. (Well, probably. It is a very rough method.)

In my spam I'm getting a lot of "package delivery" and "pending delivery" emails. Some purporting to be from Fedex. I always hover over the "from" email address, to see if it's a kosher one.

Just looking at the "From" address in the email client program/website isn't enough to determine if the message is fake as the From header is trivial to spoof. If you have access to the mail headers then it's possible to determine if the message was sent from where it claims to have been sent from.

Even so I high proportion don't seem to make that much effort. A quick mouse over is usually the most that is needed.

Depends on the level of effort that the scammers are putting in. A lot of the less skilled ones will be easily detected as the display name and email address won't match, but it only takes a tiny amount of effort to spoof that convincingly.

I'm getting occasional texts allegedly from Motorway giving me a valuation for my Porsche. I don't and never have owned a Porsche so those texts go straight to the trash can.

I wonder if they used their TV advert methodology for deciding which valuation they gave, which involves six members of staff in a large circular format dancing on enormous calculators for a set period of time?

I'm never likely to own a Porsche or even want one :D:D:D:D:D:D

Scam call received yesterday. Hung up and blocked it. However, I got a call from the same number again this morning.
who-called-me has certainly had one other caller reporting that the number in question had "beaten" their call-blocker.
Anyone else had similar?

Was it definitely the same number? E.g. if it was an international number was it perhaps presented in +<country-code> format the first time and 00<country-code> format the second time?

1471 gave it as the same number, naja, and confirmed it had been previously blocked.
It's an 020 38 number, so purporting to be London-based, not that that means anything these days ...

That is extremely odd then (and slightly worrying!) if they've figured out a way to get past network-level blocking.
There's a way round blocking - and it started when you could block landlines from accepting withheld numbers.

When they call you on, say, 02071234567 they can prefix it with 1470 and it gets round this, meaning they can dial 14700207124567 which confuses the blocking system as well as third party systems.

I think you're confusing 1470 with 141 (dialling 141 withholds your number, 1470 shows your number if its normally withheld).

No, even if you have a number blocked, when a caller prefixes the number with 1470 it gets round the blocking systems in place as it technically is a different number calling you albeit its the same one.

Aha - that makes sense - though I suppose in the UK, the lookup could just be based on the last 11 digits to alleviate this "workaround"

Do you have a link to anywhere this is documented. While I don't doubt that you may have experienced this, as far as I know, this isn't the expected behaviour. Network codes (141, 1470, 1471, etc.) shouldn't normally be passed through to the called party.

I am not sure if it as a scam, but I have been getting a series of e-mails of houses I ‘may be interested in’ from someone called Leaders: these places are dotted around, including Birmingham, Cardiff, Milton Keynes and Portsmouth. It could be that they have bought a list from when I was house-hunting over a year ago from somebody who hadn’t deleted my name or maybe they have found out that I have two properties (the old one isn’t sold yet) and therefore think I am an investment landlord. It is noticeable that the properties are very much investment type ones and not like the one I sought.

Sounds more like you've been added to their spam mailing list, rather than this being a scam.

Believe Leaders are a bona-fide estate and lettings agent, and would imagine they should provide a ready means of unsubscribing from their e-mails towards the bottom of same.

Failing that, you can always complain to <dataprotection@lrg.co.uk>

I don’t think this truck from “IPS” would reach my house somehow…

I've now had another one - this time the same one as @ABB125 reported in post #1,362. I suspect I won't have many scams that are easier to identify personally, being male for starters...
(As an aside, the 7726 process was remarkably easy.)

This was the "Hi Mum. I'm texting you from a friend's phone..." scam text message.

Was the one that you got ostensibly sent from the same number (= 07748222194) which still seems to be racking up a fair number of adverse comments on "Who called me"?

No. I can't remember the number now - I'll look up what it was in my 7726 text history.

Between 10:00 & 12:05 this morning I've had four phonecalls to my mobile which hung up immediately after I picked up. Interestingly one came up on the caller ID as "Expert Defence Services". Also getting some emails about package deliveries. I guess the scammers are relying on it getting close to the run up to Christmas for people to fall for those.

Every month or so I have a scan through my BT spam folder, every now and again I’ll find the odd legitimate email in there.

This month’s star prize goes to them (BT) for intercepting their own monthly email telling me my bill was ready to look at… o_O

I feel the same and not just the UK government, but governments worldwide need to put pressure onto the Indian government but sadly they're corrupt as well and no doubt take a "backhander" from the scam call centres.

I'm not sure it's quite as a bad them actively taking backhanders (though I'm not ruling it out of course!). Personally I suspect is has far more to do with the local police forces not seeing dealing with criminals who are targeting foreign nationals who are comparatively wealthy as much of a priority when they've got bigger fish to fry closer to home. Jim Browning (a scambaiter on YouTube, his channel is well worth a watch if you're interested in this sort of thing) recently put out a video of a case where the scammer were arrested by the Indian police but you can't help but suspect that the reason they got motivated to do was because the scammers were impersonating police officers as part of their routine! If it had just been the typical "I'm calling from Amazon about an iPhone someone ordered on your account" it would have gone right into the pile of other reports to be dealt with "someday".

The video mentioned above:

Interesting phone call today from a firm who claimed they'd installed loft insulation for me "some years ago". They rang off very quickly when I pointed out they'd done no such thing!
