Are the Chiltern tunnels and Northolt tunnels designed and built for 400kph running? Ie will the linespeed for Phase 1/2a in operation be 330kph in all areas or will it be significantly reduced in some sections as HS1 is between St Pancras and Ebbsfleet.

EDIT: Or if you prefer footage shot from alight aircraft...
Fascinating, thank you. There's now plenty of evidence on the ground all the way.

It's not very accurate for the video to describe itself as "Chalfont to Birmingham" - it ends as it gets near Leamington.

Wow that is an excellent video which shows the true scale of the construction work taking place. Clearly visible defined route now from the air which is amazing.

At Calvert are they letting HS2 get on with the work before EWR because they are projecting Oxford to MK/Bedford to be open by 2025 I thought.

They are not 400kph - they are something like 320/330. If you can still find the "plan and profile" maps from early in the planning process, the speeds are cited on them.

A section of the EWR route, of the order of a mile or so each side of the HS2 crossing, is in the hands of HS2. They have to complete the bridge (13:30 in the video) and the EWR approach embankments and new road bridge(s), and then hand it back to EWR for tracklaying. It will be the last section of EWR (between Bicester and Bletchley) to receive track. I've asked previously if there's a published date for the handback.

Somewhere it says that the diameter of the cutting heads for the Northolt TBMs is less than that for the Chiltern ones, as the tunnel diameter is smaller for the lower running speed in the London tunnels.

I suppose that makes some sense because I seriously doubt northbound trains would be able to accelerate quickly enough to reach 200 mph in the Northolt tunnels anyway with all services stopping at OOC and the design.

They need that bridge in by early 2024 for E-W testing.

Judging by the fact that the entire bridge deck is sitting there ready to be lifted on (and indeed may have been installed by now), I’d expect it to be considerably early than 2024.

HS2 Ltd has updated the TBM positions in the Chiltern and Northolt tunnels, for November 29.
The Chiltern pair are at 7630m/7419m, and are moving at a good rate of over 25m/day, approaching the Amersham vent shaft.
The Northolt TBMs are at 264m and 57m, both moving slowly after their recent launch.
After a month, the backup train of the second Northolt TBM Caroline has not yet cleared into the tunnel section, but at least its position is now visible on the map.
The logistics support for these TBMs at West Ruislip will not be fully installed until the new year (railway siding, conveyor system etc).

Seems that the tunnelling is going better and faster than planned in the chilterns which can only be a good thing. Didn't they project 15m a day?

HS2 have posted more than once that they expect an average of 15m a day from the TBMs.
Despite the good Chiltern progress recently, the long term average is 13/14m a day since their launch dates, with the 2nd (Cecilia) doing better than the 1st (Florence).
I believe Florence does ground investigations for both TBMs as it is leading.
Negotiating each passage of the vent shafts seem to take 1-2 weeks of slow progress (and TBM maintenance I think), and there have been other incidents (eg a small fire stopped work early on).
Of the 5 Chiltern vent shafts there are still 3 to go (Amersham, Great and Little Missenden).
The logistics keep getting harder as they are further from the supply point at the southern portal, and a different team is now busy building cross-passages between the tunnels every 500m or so.
But if they keep going at something like the current rate of 25m/day, they could pass the 15m/day average and finish early in 2024, which would be a very good result.

The Northolt TBMs still haven't broken out of their startup phase, and are not achieving the modest rates the Chiltern TBMs did in their first month or two.
Ground conditions will be different of course, being London clay rather than Chiltern chalk.

What's it called? It's called Cumbernauld
I believe that is the final position of the bridge, it certainly seems to be fixed on supports which suggests the Aylesbury - Princes Risborough branch will be slewed / realigned slightly to the west with HS2 diving underneath. The branch line is due to be closed for a few weeks next year for this work to take place.

Yes it does get slewed west, I’ve dug out a map that shows the move, I’d estimate it’s about 1500m overall realignment:

Very quickly regarding Aylesbury - Princes Risborough, are there any plans or intentions to provide a passing loop so as there can be a 30 minute frequency, or are the works to realign the track is in the wrong place?

It would make sense to do the passing loop at the same time while there so as to avoid having to close the line again to do it.

There are definitely no changes planned for Aylesbury to Princes Risborough, the proposed EWR work to enable through services was pulled by DfT before the TWA application process started, the removal of all work was mentioned in the inspectors report, and has been reported in the various EWR threads elsewhere in this forum.

Photos today of Transport Secretary Mark Harper traversing the completed west bore of the Long Itchington tunnel.
Looks like it was a media event too, so more coverage might appear.
The surprise is the tunnel is evidently curved, something not obvious from most plans.

The Transport Secretary’s historic drive-through comes a week after Chancellor Jeremy Hunt visited HS2’s Interchange station site, in recognition of the progress the project is making, with almost 30,000 jobs now supported by HS2 and over 2,700 businesses awarded contracts.

Some statistics on HS2 from RAIL 971 p. 31. The main OLE contract for phases 1 and 2a is expected to be let in the first quarter of 2023 and includes wiring of

Phase 1: 469 single-track km, 58 viaducts, 48 underbridges, 148 overbridges, 4 "complex track junctions" that include 99 high-speed turnouts.

Phase 2a: 120 stk, 18 underbridges, 43 overbridges, 4 viaducts, 2 high-speed turnouts.

The track laying contract is also due to be awarded in Q1 2023.
The signalling contract, called "Control, Command and Signalling (CCS) and Traffic Management" is due in Q2 2023.
Both contracts will cover Phases 1 and 2a.

HS2 Ltd has a full list of contracts both awarded and in the pipeline, with short-listed contractors where relevant, at:

The very shallow launch (unlike the other tunnels so far and the OOC launched ones in the future) will slows thing down until they get to a reasonable depth and the pace can step up.

No plans for a passing loop although new signals are planned, one each side of Marsh Lane LC to increase capacity on the line.

They still make it lop sided on the down, not sure what its going to unlock as you are still planning as if its AB. You will have the Risborough to Kimble section which is nigh on 3 miles, then a new 1½ mile section then 2½ miles to Aylesbury. Its a bit better on the up, but the signals are there to protect the crossing, any capacity is a bonus. The barriers will be down longer as well as the strike in points are moved by a mile in each direction.

But even then, surely this is not related to either HS2, or even to EWR?

Do we know how construction supply trains will reach the HS2 base at Calvert (track, rail, OHLE etc)?
Presumably mostly via EWR when it is operational.
Maybe that won't be clear until the contracts are let.

I don’t know any details, but that seems a foregone conclusion. My earlier reply was really just in response to post #1636, which was asking about improving the Risborough to Aylesbury passenger services by adding a loop on the back of the track diversion.

Yes it is, as the single line is being raised so that HS2 can dive underneath. The new signal on the Up will protect the crossing, at the foot of the new incline.

Ah right. But still not really about improving the overall passenger service? I knew about the track lift, we discussed it early last month when I posted an extract from the drawing.

It has potential to do that by adding an extra section in each direction over the branch. But it will have very limited benefit as there is rarely more than one train that needs to traverse the line in the same direction.

User staffie on SSC has posted a picture of works at Huddlesford, east of Lichfield, where HS2, a few miles before the north end of Phase 1, will go under the WCML. The picture appears to show the reinforced concrete floor slab of a future box-type bridge, which the WCML will presumably be diverted to go over once the bridge is structurally complete. The user remarks that the original plan was to go over the WCML here.

Does anyone have a link to a map showing the required WCML realignment?

Edit: on second thoughts maybe I've misunderstood the bridge type. Maybe it will be pipejacked like the Werrington underpass or something?
