Yes - according to Railcam Live, that and 5Z30 are the headcodes for the shakedown runs for the repainted sets.

@Crun The link does not work for me. Also be aware that Facebook is often banned from a lot of locations. Can you please amend the link and also provide a text alternative so that anyone who cannot access the link is able to get an overview of what the link contains. Many thanks in advance :)

The link didn't work on a desktop, but it does work if you change the m. to www.

It's just someone on a windy bridge over the East Coast mainline.

Pics have emerged on Fb showing 91122 + 91128 awaiting their doom at Sims Metals Newport. Looks like the INTERCITY 50 nameplate has been removed from the latter loco

It's a bit confusing (and sad) to see some of the fleet meeting their end whilst at the same time others are being fully reborn.

Railways In South Wales group.

128 has had the nameplate removed by flame cutting the body side around it rather than just taking the bolts off, I guess that was an easier way of doing so.
Thanks!

Flame cutting around the nameplates allows the rest of the loco to be processed quicker. The plates will likely now be unscrewed from that was flame cut with them.

There is a photo of some Class 91s at the scrapyard. From the National Rail Air Ops team (link to original post on Twitter):

Anyone have the I/D's of the MK1V stock in the picture?

Don't recall any being delivered by rail to Sims recently.

Presume they arrived by road?

It isn't Sims, it's Booth's in Rotherham.

10332, 11409/414, 12209/423/453 were all sent there for disposal during the first half of May.

This question has probably been asked already somewhere but why have the mk4's not been cascaded to replace mk3 stock, either by train operating companies or railtour providers like LSL? Surely they are a step up in every respect from a mk3?! I can kind of understand the need to scrap an expensive to maintain locos like the 91's but you'd assume the mk4's could go on being useful for years...

They are generally an upgrade, albeit worse in a few ways. But yes, they are generally finding new lives as Mark 3 replacements, but the need to do it isn't always there. Additionally Mark 4s are much less usable than Mark 3s as they require a DVT at one end and the 'converter coach' as I like to call it at the other, as the couplings are different on the inside. Therefore their operation will be complex unless they are used in fixed sets. With some modifications the Class 91s could be good for freight but because of the 'last mile' issue electric freight locomotives aren't at the top of everyone's wishlists. The Class 99s which are replacing some 66s are bi-mode for this very reason.

Clearance was a big issue, eg not cleared for midland mainline due to the length of coaches.

Not disagreeing, but I can think of one instance where a Mk4 set visited St Pancras on a MML service!

It may well of done, but how did it get there!!
Guarantee it won’t of been via Derby, Kettering etc.

Probably the same way as Mark 3s made it into P5/P6 in Newcastle last year - went a route it wasn't cleared for and they were very lucky it didn't hit anything!

Transport for Wales did exactly that, of course.

ScotRail put out a tender to replace its Mk2 sets used for Fife peak services which suggested PRM-compliant LHCS and specified a seating count of 370 that could be made exactly with Mk4s (four TOs and a TOD): https://www.publiccontractsscotland.gov.uk/search/show/search_view.aspx?ID=NOV373366. In the end this was not needed.

With my crayons out, it would be lovely to have Mk4s on the Scottish Inter7City routes. But they weren’t available in time - and even when they were, not in the quantity of sets (27) needed.

You could imagine that, in a bygone era, the Mk4s would have replaced Mk3s on Norwich intercity services. Yet the franchise specifications (and, reportedly, the minimum orders on the Stadler fleets) meant new-build instead.

That leaves Chiltern. I consider it something of a miracle that their hauled sets haven’t been canned yet. I doubt they will be around for much longer, so an expensive investment in replacement coaches just isn’t in the innings.

Railtours - unfortunately, I don’t think IC225s have the same admiration as slam-door Mk3s and older locos enjoy among enthusiasts. You only have to consider LSL removing some of their 90-hauled tours because they aren’t popular enough. Mk3s must also be more flexible to run compared with the relatively fixed-set nature of the Mk4. That’s before you consider the more limited clearance of Mk4s - not insurmountable, but adds to the cost.

That said, I really hope that when LNER dispenses with their sets in the next couple of years, that some of the coaches might find further use - either on the mainline or in preservation/tour use with organisations like LSL and the 225 Group. The Class 91s were never the most reliable and are tired, but the coaches - apart from their doors! - still provide a fantastic travelling experience.

Richard Clinnick wrote in 2013 that “it seems inconceivable that should they be displaced by Intercity Express Project trains, they would be scrapped”. Yet, for a variety of political, financial, and pandemic reasons, more than half have now been scrapped. It’s understandable but a shame nevertheless.

Thanks for that.

I should have zoomed in and checked the loco numbers.

I wrongly presumed the picture related to 91122 and 91128 at Sims as that was what was being discussed upthread.
