Although loosely related EMR are rolling out automated announcements across its entire fleet using Julie Berry as the voice. I believe the roll out is imminent
If I'm not mistaken, the equipment's been there since new on everything except the Sprinters which have had it in place as a retrofit since they were PRM-modded. It's high time they actually started using it!

(Though maybe they should first sort out the destination blinds on the Nottingham-Norwich just saying "Welcome aboard this service" instead of an actual destination...)

A refresh of the 222's has started including replacing/cleaning of the seat covers.

Wouldn't surprise if the first class covers get the specialist deep clean, whilst the standard class cloth covers are replaced. Too much to hope for moquette!

360108 looking close to completion at Eastleigh this afternoon (other cars inside). It wouldn’t surprise me if this departs in the next week or two.

As outgoing fleets, are the 222s, 158s and 180s not getting new seat covers? The video shows the same Stagecoach covers seemingly getting deep cleaned then put back on.

Only the 222s are getting new seat covers, it’s the same red seating as before

The 158s should be getting a full refurbishment as they are staying until the end of the franchise

Good. The red may not be on brand but the 222s have a fabulous standard class interior, if a little worn at present.

It's the shocking state of the fleet interiors that desperately needs doing - and how many years are we into the franchise - that is surely what matter to passengers - who spends their journey looking at the outside of the train?

Good that the 222 interiors are at least now to be improved- tho that could have started whilst the HST fleet was still in place.

Abellio are prooving themselves to be a poorer franchisee than stagecoach IMHO, and I was happy to give them time to show us what they could do. Obviously DfT have not helped in all this.

I have always maintained that the DfT loves shafting the East Midlands - they seem to willingly hand out new trains to TPE; but EMR has to put up with stock shortages, run down cascaded trains, delays to refurbishments, being rudderless against other TOCs’ new train introduction delays and, to cap it all off, run by an incompetent TOC (I yearn for the days of Midland Mainline). After nearly 3 years, it’s unacceptable that there is still the possibility of Liv-Notts services being run by a single 156.

I was really hopeful when EMR arrived. We were promised good times ahead, nice new IC trains (delayed), a good Connect service (delayed and unrefurbished) and far-improved Regional stock (delayed and unrefurbished). On hindsight, alarm bells should have rung when FirstGroup-Trenitalia pulled out in favour of other franchises and then the disqualifications during the tender process - Abellio, being unchallenged (and a late entry), were never going to deliver on their promises and seemingly get away with it with not even a slap on the wrist from the DfT.

Yes, I appreciate that Covid has messed things about significantly; however we’re at the point where it can no longer be blamed for delays. The DfT needs to pull its finger out and authorise the 170/360/158 refurbishment programme to give us EMR passengers at least some cheer - swish marketing campaigns, concentrating on the livery & station branding and a few new seat covers for the 222s don’t wash it.

On a final note, when the 810s do finally arrive, anybody fancy sticking a quid on that EMR will wrongly claim that the 810s are the first bi-modal AT300 to come to St Pancras? Remembering that Hull’s 802s were diverted there last year…

I agree with your analysis - also not helped by poor lobbying / lack of co-ordination by the cities and communities along the route who largely seem to behave in a fairly parochial manner, never lose a chance for petty rivalry and low level squabbling whilst behaving as if no other place in the region really exists. Doesn't create a recipe for effective results.

And this is weird since much of the MML corridor is marginal seats the outcome of which decides general election results - you would think that could result in regular spending commitments in the region! Maybe it just works for roads...

At risk of taking the thread off topic, it would be a very false claim if they did, as the 395s were in St Pancras many moons ago! (Was it 2012, hence the "Javelin" moniker?)

I actually meant to specify bi-modal AT300s - I doubt even EMR would be so stupid to forget the 395s!

Back OT, it is nice to see the liveries and station branding getting sorted; but I think EMR are getting their priorities wrong. Get the fundamentals (eg refurbishment) right first and then focus on the “cosmetics” later.

God forbid if FirstGroup was running EMR... But if anything like AWC, then possibly not too bad (with more thanks to the Virgin legacy) also GWR not so perfect likely better than past Worst Late Western days. And there's SWR... First probably would handle EMR more like it.

Shame how Abellio are running EMR as Greater Anglia is fairly decent - better than NXEA - also helped by their new Flirts now in service.

It probably will come down to no matter who runs EMR that the DfT will always have a hand in whatever happens as GA is just fortunate with their new fleets also say if Arriva runs SWR they'd still face the same issues with the 701 debacle.

You evidently don’t remember the 2002/3 version of MML, which was so dire it was the worst performing operator.

I have been very disappointed that the MPs from constituencies along the length of the Robin Hood Line haven’t spoken out loudly with one voice about the supposedly temporary reduced timetable that was introduced a year ago. They are all Conservatives in former very strong labour areas and are all in danger of losing their seats. It is currently the worst timetable the line has had since it fully reopened over 20 years ago. There is still only an hourly service between Mansfield and Nottingham outside of peak times and journey times are longer than they have ever been. From May journey times were lengthened, and trains are now mainly running on time after a year of delays and unreliability. However EMR seem to deny all knowledge that for over 20 years the line mainly operated successfully with more frequent trains and shorter journey times. Why can’t they bring back the old timetable that worked for over 20 years.

Points well made - you might think those MPs would see this as a good example to show their influence in delivering the 'leveling up' agenda, and get on to the Minister and DfT about the poor showing - but clearly not of much interest to them...

Admittedly, I started commuting properly with ML from 2004/5 onwards and, apart from the odd mishap here and there, had a very positive experience overall. But, yes I agree that opinions are subjective - I’m sure there are plenty out there who had the opposite experience to me.

Livery-wise, I’m not sure what to make of the EMR aubergine - I’ve been trying to come to a consensus but the jury’s out. On one hand, it’s a simple, understated look; but on the other, it looks like they found loads of plum-coloured paint left over from somewhere and needed to use it! I actually prefer the outgoing livery - nice contrast between the purple front and white body.

One to keep an eye on, 156498 apparently is out of traffic at Etches Park (and has been for some time) awaiting a decision to be made on whether corrosion repairs are to be authorised, it is currently unfit for traffic and requires works attention.

I quite like it - it suits the 170s very well, especially with the black front/rear light surrounds. They've done a nice job on the 360s to make it suit the shape at the front as well.

Truth be told the purple also hides the dirt a lot better... with how dirty EMRs trains are (the white is way more often mud brown on the 222s), a darker colour is a good choice.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if this ends up at Newport Sims Metals (or somewhere similar).

Well this version of the MML can't be much better than 2002/2003, surely?

We currently have 222s that are starting to show their age internally - and whilst the fleet has been standardized to 5 car, there is now a weird mismatch of provisioning between units. Some 5 car units have 2 cars 1st, some have 1 2/3 cars 1st, and some have 1 1/3 cars 1st.

The 360s still have their original interiors, with no tables and 2+3 seating, as well as being regularly short formed to 4 cars. We were promised 12 cars in the peaks. Plus, at least for Wellingborough/Bedford/Luton customers travelling north, they don't actually go where they need to, i.e. Leicester/Nottingham/Sheffield.

Personally I'd have kept the HST's and refurbished them to be PRM compliant - the HST's (all apart from the ex GC units) were 8 car, so no short formations; they actually had tables and 2+2 seating (which is much comfier and more suitable than commuter 2+3), they actually used to go further north than Kettering, and they had a higher running speed of 125mph - compared to the 110 of the 360s - and speaking of, the 360s can only do 110 between Wellingborough and Bedford (and vice versa). Corby - Wellingborough is 90 due to the limitations of the Slow lines and Beford - London is 100 due to the limitations of the old OHLE wiring.

For me, it would have been: upgrade the Slow lines to 100mph in all directions; use a 100mph capable DMU (like a 170, for example) to do Corby - Bedford intermediate stations for those that want to travel to Corby (interconnects with Thameslink at Bedford for London), use the HSTs and 180s to do London - Leicester - Nottingham/Sheffield (with at least a half hourly Bedford/Wellingborough/Kettering stops) and send the 222s to either CrossCountry or Newport Sims Metals.
(Yes, I don't like the 22x series of trains either, who thought it was a good idea to screen out 3G/4G/5G/FM/DAB/GPS using metallic foil in the coach windows?!)

I can't wait to actually get enough of an income to afford a car/insurance/petrol etc - then I'll start driving and become self-sufficient, so I won't need to rely on shoddy TOC's such as EMR. 2 trains northbound per day, and 3 trains southbound per day, does not count as a sufficient service IMO.

I just can’t take what you’ve said seriously. You seem to be arguing for no electrification (DMUs?) and getting rid of the bulk of the fleet (222s).

What’s missing from the MML currently is stopping one of the Sheffields at Kettering (in place of a Nottingham) and/or wiring through to Leicester and sending one of the 360 stoppers there instead of Corby to connect.

Personally I'd have kept the HST's

Whilst HSTs we’re great for capacity they were showing their age much more than 222s and 360s are currently, both cosmetically and mechanically. EMR couldn’t even use 8 car sets when they brought in the ex LNER ones as some of the coaches were in such poor condition. Given that there are a lot of complaints about the age/poor state of the 222s and 360s, I doubt using a much older HST would have worked as a solution

I fully agree with stopping a Sheffield - would be an easy solution so that customers south of Kettering (& Corby) don't need to change 2 times to get to Derby/Chesterfield/Sheffield. The Nottingham and Sheffield semi-fasts should stop at Kettering & Market Harborough, and the fasts for both should not stop anywhere south of Leicester.

Isn't the Station at Leicester the big blocker on wires to Leicester. Can't lift the bridge, too big and I'm sure a Network Rail friend of mine said the track cannot be lowered.

Yes, I don't like the 22x series of trains either, who thought it was a good idea to screen out 3G/4G/5G/FM/DAB/GPS using metallic foil in the coach windows?!

The foil is not there to screen out mobile phone signals, it's there to reduce the amount of heat that enters the carriages, making the temperature more stable and making it easier to cool. Remember these trains were designed before it was common for every passenger to need a high quality radio signal through the glass.

My suggestion was just theory based on what I would do if I had an input into the MML. I knew it wouldn't be feasible. However, I do believe that the 360s aren't ideal, based on their current condition, and the 222s (as well as the 220s/221s) have a serious design flaw that, IMO, makes them unsuitable in the 2020s. I can't wait for the 810s to come along so at least it banishes the 222s to history.

You do have some good ideas there though. 1 train per hour to Corby is enough, and, if electrification went to Leicester, then us Wellingborough users (as well as Bedford and Luton) would get our Northbound services back, with 1 change (at Leicester) for either Nottingham or Sheffield. This would also allow all current Nottingham and Sheffield to run fast to Leicester, if there was enough stopping services via EMUs to go to Leicester.

I'm due in September to travel to Nottingham from Stockport or Crewe (TBD), then onto Sleaford then Lincoln.

I hope for an exotic combo of rolling stock, liveries and interiors. I am aware that EMR refurbishments have not yet commenced as such.
