I have noticed that, with the naming of class 56 conversion 69001 as 'Mayflower', there are now two locos with that name operating on the national network, the other being B1 class steam loco 61306, used by 'Steam Dreams'. Has this situation occurred before, I wonder?

“Flying Scotsman” is carried both by the Gresley A3 and by 91101. I’m pretty certain the two locos have met on the mainline, quite possibly multiple times.

87 004 was named "Britannia" and 87 018 was "Lord Nelson". I wonder whether either of those two locos ever encountered their preserved steam namesakes during their operational careers?

Not a loco, but 800025 is named after Captain Tom Moore as is 66731 and ( off topic) a Stagecoach double decker

William Whitelaw, chairman of the LNER, used to joke there were three locomotives running on his system at the same time named after him:

A4 Pacific 'William Whitelaw'
D30 4-4-0 'Wandering Willie'
J36 0-6-0 'Ole Bill'

62277 Gordon Highlander was at D9016 Gordon Highlander's naming ceremony.
The reason this stands out for me is I watched a HQ film of it, at first I thought it was a preserved railway bash but turned it wasn't.

I'll have to find my bumper book of loco names and dates.

I think we had a similar thread on this recently? One name I can think of that has transitioned from Loco to Loco, though not at the same time, 43189 ‘Railway Heritage Trust’ to 92033 ‘Railway Heritage Trust’. Of course various Pendolinos were the same as well.

And for us here on the Western, we’ve had Pendennis Castle and Pendennis Castle (4079 & 57604):

If we’re including examples where the names weren’t carried at the same time, 91114 currently carries the name ‘Durham Cathedral’, whilst previously the name was carried by 91102.

Another example where the names weren’t carried at the same time are 800004 and 91129, which currently and previously carried the name ‘Queen Elizabeth II’ respectively - to add to this one both trains have also been used to transport her majesty.

Although the Warship is long gone, we had/have:

D849 Superb
50002 Superb
68025 Superb
(
There’s also a Welshpool and Llanfair loco called Superb ;))

Unfortunately, the warship is still sitting in 3 Basin at Devonport, full of fuel, nearly fourteen years after being decommissioned.

There was also a LNWR Jubilee/Renown Class loco.

North London or Mildmay line
But 87001 isn't currently operating on the national rail network.
Ah sorry-didn’t read the OP’s request thoroughly enough!

As one was a 57/3 and another a Pendolino it is quite possible the 57 hauled the 390 at some point while both carried the name.
I'm sure at one point not that long ago, there was a loco and 2 units that were named Chad Varrah
I think the other was a 350, interesting that all of these were West Coast trains

The LNER inherited several former North British and Great Central locos which duplicated names from their First World War service.

The GWR and LMS had separate King George VIs running at the same time.

The most recent incarnation of LNER had an HST power car called Bounds Green and 91119 Bounds Green Intercity Depot which probably crossed paths most days of the week.

There was also a Class 221 and a Class 365 both named after Captain George Vancouver.

Both 43192 and 47625 were named City of Truro and possibly both carried the same name at the same time?

There were quite a lot in steam days. Even confining it to the BR period there were around 45 duplicated names (90 locos) but the names sometimes had different meanings. For example SR Schools class 30902 Wellington referred, not surprisingly, to the public school, whereas the same name on GWR Castle 5075 referred to the fighter plane. Merlin was the bird on A4 60027 and the magician on King Arthur 30740.

There were four locos named Prince of Wales in service at the same time - Vale of Rheidol tank no. 9, GWR Star 4041, A3 60054 and D11 62662. Then you have the same name with different spellings, for example Owen Glendower on Britannia 70010 and Owain Glyndŵr on Vale of Rheidol tank no. 7.

I admit to having a list of these ready just in case anyone asks!

One of the funniest/oddest examples must be the Southern Railway's naming of its N15s - the King Arthurs.

I'm sure someone will know in more detail, but I think at least two were named after the same "person" - one of which was "Iseult", AKA "Lady of the Lake".

Obviously the SR Naming Committee did not know their "Le Morte d'Arthur" very well - or perhaps they did!

I also wonder if King Uther was a p*ss take made up by the Lord's good knights to describe King Arthur himself after a late Friday night's revelries :)

Great names though - can you imagine a young lad of 10 standing at the end of platform 11 at Waterloo before heading west behind a big green engine named "Sir Dodinas le Savage" at the head of an 11-coach train bearing the title "Atlantic Coast Express"?

Awesome! It might even have prompted me to really try harder at French, had it been me.

Not sure about this one, but two pairs of LNER B1s were named after the same animal - Gnu and Wildebeeste; Reedbuck and Reitbok (English and Afrikaans version). Slightly more obscure was GWR Saint 2987 "Bride of Lammermoor" and LNER D11 62680 "Lucy Ashton", the same person - Lucia di Lammermoor for those who know their opera!

Oh, so that's who she is!

Shame, Lucy Ashton just doesn't have the allure of Lucia di Lammermoor somehow!

Ha ha! Yes, I'd forgotten that one. Mind you, if they hadn't done that, we might not have got this.

And "Rail Riders", which was carried by 47406 from about 1981-88 and then by 47488 from 1988-92 as I recall.

Today, although not quite the same name, 66175 is named "Rail Riders Express" and 66303 is named "Rail Riders 2020" - I think it was named to mark the launch of a present day version of the Rail Riders club (see this thread on the new Rail Riders club: https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/rail-riders-club-2020.192220/).

HST power car 43194 was named Royal Signals in October 1985 and 45 144 of the same name was not withdrawn until late 1987
