Funny results with National Express

There was chat in another thread about local journeys with National Express. Some that used to be possible are now quite difficult and seem to be available intermittently. Off topic i know but what time were you looking at travelling? The reason for asking is some journeys are pick up only at...

Only the Flixbus Bristol route has reasonable loadings every thing i have seen has been nearly empty.

I've been using Flixbus fairly regularly to travel between London and Cardiff via Bristol but there is currently no service after Wednesday 27 April. The two daily journeys are London - Bristol only from Thursday 28 April. National Express are still offering fares from £4.90 between London and Cardiff into July and I've booked my journey needs for the next three months but I suspect prices will increase if the Flixbus competition to Cardiff is permanently removed .

The Flixbus coaches on that route have been getting steadily busier over the last year though only about a third of passengers travel beyond Bristol and I thought the number of departures might be set for an increase but this looks like a further cutback.

I wonder if McGills will operate an overnight up the M6 to Glasgow. I would guess they would need an extra bus.

Is that a firm comment or speculation on possible expansion?

I know that Hearns are recruiting 5 drivers and Whippets 4 drivers for Flixbus work (Both on Indeed.com and the adverts state further down the number of positions open for that job role) which implies expansion from them but how far will the expansion go. Is Flix even turning a profit yet in the UK as fares are generally quite low still and a good number of routes showing on the booking system as 'mostly empty'

Few weeks ago I tried it on Paris to London flixbus. Someone did try and sit next to me. The seats weren't marked as reserved so I showed him the ticket. Not everyone using the service had booked a seat.

It's fairly normal for their lowest level of fares. Usually only a couple will be at that price.

With the cost of fuel rising, many of us are looking for cheaper options to travel - especially when it comes to longer journeys across the UK.
Fortunately for Glaswegians, Flixbus are launching a new service from the city right in time for consumers to travel over the May Day Bank Holiday Weekend - with tickets on the route starting from just 99p.
The new coach route from Glasgow to Manchester includes stop-offs at Preston and Lancaster - increasing the total number of locations on the FlixBus network to over 30.
The affordable and eco-friendly travel operator will run coaches to and from Manchester and Glasgow five times a week, offering an eco-friendly transport alternative for increasingly climate-conscious consumers.
Checking the FlixBus website this morning, 99p fares from Glasgow to Manchester are available on Monday May 2, Tuesday May 3, Friday May 6 - with even more dates the following week and throughout May.
With hundreds of coach services across the country now running weekly, FlixBus expects to see its passenger numbers reach their highest level since the company relaunched in the UK last year, especially as university students finish the academic year.
FlixBus UK Managing Director Andreas Schorling said: “It’s wonderful to be able to offer passengers more destination options than ever before, particularly these new routes between Manchester and Glasgow. We know that the cost of living is soaring, so it is worth remembering that coach travel is the most cost-effective way to get around.”

Only one return journey from Swansea and Cardiif to London from 27 April, the least service since Flixbus launched in the UK.
London to Cardiff is scheduled to take 4 hours 25 minutes, a slight increase in journey time and slower than both Megabus and National Express. Disappointing.

Let me know how they enforce that. I’m a bit uneasy about booking in case it’s not enforced.

I had no problems with anyone trying to claim my second seat. The service was busy though. I did notice some people at Victoria, just sitting in any old seat then getting asked to move. The drivers did ask everyone to sit in their allocated seat, there was a few people that kept seat hopping. I thought everyone had to reserve a seat. I must say the seats on this McGills Volvos are not that comfortable, they are narrow. Very similar to an Irizar, national express seats are noticibly bigger.

I was amused that 3 people got on at Edinburgh to go Glasgow, there is countless 900s and the train! I guess Flixbus is a bigger name in Europe so will garner bookings from those.

Hearn’s Coaches of Harrow is a further operator to engage with FlixBus UK as part of what the travel technology company describes as “a long-term partnership.” Hearn’s will operate scheduled coach services between points including London, Leicester and Bradford from 12 May.

Services will initially operate daily but FlixBus says that additional departures may potentially by added “as demand increases for the high season this summer.”

Yes, it is the Mercedes Tourismo’s - BV71HYJ/K - which are both now in FlixBus green.

I gave Flixbus’ new UK045 Plymouth-London service a go on Saturday 7th May for a daytrip to Reading. An appropriately liveried VanHool thing with registration plate BR21 OCV (photo attached) turned up to Plymouth coach station presumably from Milehouse 16 minutes past the timetabled departure time with a Roselyn driver at the helm and left about 25 late after checking all 10 of us were in our assigned seats. Roselyn driver then took the coach as far as Taunton where a Berry’s driver was waiting in a van to take over to and from London. On the return journey the coach left London Victoria 37 minutes late arriving at Reading 55 minutes late due to a weekend closure between J6&8 on the M4. The same Roselyn driver then took back the coach at Taunton and we arrived back in Plymouth 30 late. It would appear this service has a habit of running late from the start! I shall be using the service again on the 16th and 19th due to 99p fares being available for both days and shall be interested to see if punctuality improves.
