Three units stabled at Feltham depot when I passed by just now. Couldn't see the numbers through the grime on my train window!

Yeah, I saw that.
Spoke to a driver I saw at Clapham Junction saying he couldn't get into Waterloo yesterday as all platforms occupied.I was Pass to Woking to work one out of the bay…which obviously wasn't in the bay as a Desiro was there.Running late due to the train I was passing on came in late and left late.
I spotted my train (455) obviously being driven by another driver between Woking and West Byfleet as I was going the other way.o_O
All okay though caught up with him at Waterloo.

Hi All

Can anyone help provide an up to date list of the 701s parked up at Eastleigh at the moment. My list is out of date and from a quick check on Sunday I could pick off 012, 013, 022, 034 & 035 and I believe 3 of the other 10 car sets were 007, 018 and 031. That may well have been all of the 10 car sets but there were certainly at least 3 5 car sets as well.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I thought only two 701/5 had come down South….

You may very well be correct Warren as I could certainly see two short sets. I thought there may have been a third set as well but that could easily have been a 10 car just set further back than the others. Would that be 509 and 512 as the only two short sets so far?

Comparison of cabs of the 345 taken by me recently and the original 701 cab before an apparent complete redesign, taken from an article in Today's Railways. The 710 and 720 cab layouts are also the same as the 345. Begs the question why it has to be redesigned on the 701s.

As I understand it, The requirement for the SWR order is for a 2 x 5-car and 10-car train to be the same length and for the all the passenger doors to be in the same positions. This means that the cab had to be shorter than those of the earlier Aventra classes, with the cab door alongside the driver's seat rather then behind it.

Yes I know that. This is about a redesign of the dashboard layout, which was the same as previous Aventras, but now won't be.

On the 345 there is about 0.5 m space behind the drivers seat, then a corridor full of equipment cabinets, meaning there's around 2m between the rear of the driver's seat and the passenger saloon. Clearly a lot of scope to reduce this by relocating equipment elsewhere, which I understand is what has been done on the 701s (pre-cab redesign).

Thanks for explaining it.
I had wondered why Bombardier were trying to reinvent the Aventra wheel with the 701s.
That very much explains why, not whether it was a great idea or not !!
