They have not been withdrawn just not being used as much. Think it is due to a rest day working agreement not being resigned. At the moment it is only really Sundays when the HSTs are out. Although it looks like one is out today on the 1153 Plymouth to Birmingham and 1642 return.

Are XC in talks to resolve the rest day working problems or is the current suituation of very little IC125 work likely to remain for the forseeable future? I ask because I hope to get back to holidays by rail this year (after 2020 and most of 2021 were lost to COVID) and the XC IC125s would be the best route to take if they are running.

With the DfT anxious to save every penny they can, I wouldn't hold your breathe on their being any money for a solution. Basically, running less trains costs less money. If that puts people off train travel,even better. You can then run even less trains!

To be honest....just one look at the cost of XC tickets has pretty much put me off ever using their services. This high cost possibly by design as lack of train capacity has been a problem since 2002. The late morning HST that ran from Plymouth to Edinburgh was at least double the price when compared to changing in London.

Agreed, the fare on the Plymouth to Birmingham section of XC makes it almost impossible for anyone to afford to travel over that route by train anymore. Quite why we can't have subsidised travel the way affluent parts of the north enjoy im not sure but it all helps to leave the south west very much behind, and forces folk into cars.

I thought fares set by GWR are quite good per mile (IIRC from Barry Does analysis articles in Rail) - but XC are v poor. They seem to be failing to release Advance quotas so people only offered the full fare or off peak discounts. Yet IC operators via London are offering the same journies cheaper (this is the same up north too as I was looking at Derby - Edinburgh last week and XC no Advance Quotas yet LNER and Avanti had plenty for sale.

But XC fares are really for another thread (even if a vital issue if you want to enjoy an XC HST!)

Cross Country Journey check has several HSTs out today, does this mean the Rest Day Working Agreement has been renewed and they can reliably diagram the HSTs again?
Or is staff availablity just improved?

Or is this only going to be improvements on Fridays for now?

Just the current revised diagrams to balance sets for the weekend I believe, given the engineering works planned, but I do hear from a contact who's into the things that they hope to have normal usage back by 21st Feb. That would be handy with it being half term for some areas.

26th would be the 1028 Worcestershire Parkway to Newcastle or the 1328 Worcestershire Parkway to Glasgow. I'd do that one as it returns to Edinburgh at 2105 via Shotts! All subject to change etc.

I've noticed that Crosscountry have HST's out today and yesterday (21st and 22nd). Does this mean they are back on weekdays regularly? Just looks like 1 set starting and finishing at Edinburgh though, last I remember there were 2 but I could be wrong. Does anyone have the fully updated weekday diagrams (if they are indeed back on weekdays regularly)?

I noticed that as well. Could be just repositioning of stock for maintenance purposes but having checked RTT, the 0925 Penzance-Edinburgh, 0611 Leeds-Plymouth and 1427 Plymouth-Leeds are HST'S today. Be great to see them back in daily use again, I've really missed them.
