I understand of course if your train is cancelled on an Advance ticket, you can get the next train. Does this still apply to a circular journey?

Im booked on the 12:04 from Shrewsbury to Llanelli which is now terminating at Llandrindod, where I’ve got to take a bus to Llanwrtyd (maybe) then a train to Llanelli. The only trouble is I have an advance from there back to Shrewsbury fifteen minutes later. It was booked as part of a return journey on TrainSplit with one itinerary. Do I still have protection to get the next train from Llanelli please?

I asked if I could get the direct train to Swansea from Shrewsbury and change there, but they wouldn’t let me sadly.

Footnote: Fully aware it was my choice to do the circular journey and it now puts me in an awkward situation.

The general rule is that if a rail problem causes you to miss a subsequent rail journey, your ticket will be valid on the next available service, and that would seem to apply as normal in this case.

Defective track near Llanelli?

What sort of overall delay are you now facing in getting back to Shrewsbury?

Could you abandon the circular route and just return to Shrewsbury from Llandrindod?

This is normally accepted without issue by guards unless they’re particularly commission hungry.

When it does get a bit awkward is if say you’d planned to have 2 hours there and you were delayed by an hour, you wouldn’t normally be allowed to delay your return for this reason (although it’s always worth contacting the operator as it has been known). But if you actually miss your return train it’s normally allowed.

If you end up buying a new ticket it would be worth a complaint and this may yield good results.

@_toommm_. Did you continue on your journey?

How far have you now got?

And what happened to the Southbound unit that terminated at Llandrindod. Is it still there, or maybe now returned to Shrewsbury?

This crops up every so often.

I previously said this:

...I agree that seeking staff advice is a good idea, and if station staff won't endorse the ticket, approaching on-board staff (where applicable) is a good idea.

I suggest a lengthy layover is planned for at least one place when on a 'circular' journey, because at some point you may have to 'define' what your 'journey' is, and it might not be to your advantage to state your journey is Bushey to London.

In your case I would have planned a break at Sheffield (perhaps visiting the Sheffield Tap) or Manchester Piccadilly, which would allow you to have two clearly defined journeys. This may be to your advantage if severe delays mean you may struggle to get back on track, and it may also be to your advantage to claim Delay Repay.

Perhaps posting future ideas to Trip Planning & Reports for others to advise on the viability of the itinerary before booking may help to reduce the potential for problems next time....
I also concur with this...

Thank you all very much for the replies. My fear at the time of posting this was that the replacement bus would call at all stations on the HoW Line from Llandrindod to Llanelli. Luckily it didn’t, and it was drop-off only for the eight of us on board. The bus driver only took me as far as Swansea so I decided to sack off the Llanelli portion and cut my losses with it.

The unit returned back to Shrewsbury as 2Z37, resuming the cancelled 2M37.
