Galloways Cough Syrup. That stuff was delicious, I always remember helping myself to a tablespoon full of the stuff whenever I went to my nan’s house, using her measuring spoons for baking!
The Big G !! Man I miss that stuff. It's Buttercup in my house and is a decent replacement.

If you mean Old Jamaica ginger beer, I bought some a couple weeks ago in Tesco.

Idris was popular down my neck of the woods. I remember you were either one or the other.

Shandy Bass... Oh how I miss thee

Pacers. Green and white striped chews.
I think there were non-striped Pacers too. When the stripey ones first came out I got thumped at primary school because I had a packet of them and refused to hand one over on demand. If he'd asked nicely in the first place...

If I recall correctly, they were just a minty version of the Opal Fruit.

I remember all sorts of stuff - Cadbury's Dream, Fuse, Flyte, and Bliss bars, Trio biscuits, the Nuts About Caramel and Truffle chocolates from Heroes and Celebrations collection boxes, Tooty Frooties (which I miss so, SO much), Starburst Choozers...

I used to rather like Virgin Cola. The guild at Manchester University sold it right up until its demise at the end of the noughties IIRC; the bar staff were almost apologetic at times about it. For me it was better than Pepsi but worse than Coke.

That's quite interesting - I hadn't realised that they had originally been branded as Opal Mints!
I remember them as Opal Mints, never came across them as Pacers which is odd given when they were renamed (I would've been but a babe in arms). Perhaps people kept calling them Opal Mints.

I'd only have been about five or six when the stripey ones came out, and I've always known them as Pacers but, as you say, it may well be that some people just kept using their old name. I still don't refer to Opal Fruits by their "new" name, and if I fancy a snack similar to a Mars bar that contains peanuts, it will forever be known to me as a Marathon! :)

(Don't get me started on the "Jif/Cif" nonsense!)

Strangely enough, my mum bought her grandkids a pack of Starburst recently and called them Opal Fruits. We were having a laugh about it when I looked at the packet and saw they had Opal Fruits written on it!
Turns out they are a limited edition thing they have been doing recently, which left me utterly baffled for about 10 seconds before I noticed.

Solidox toothpaste.

Plasmon oats (porridge) - I have vague memories of mainly yellow packages from when I was very young.

Not needed matches since our last gas fire was removed, but do they still make Swan Vestas or Pilot matches ?

There was a brand called Insignia that came out as a rival to Lynx. I still remember the song from their TV ad :

"Insignia's got everything
Shampoo and shower gel
Deodorant and aftershave
For one all over smell"

I don't think it lasted long. Lynx was the winner!
I had it in mind that Insignia was earlier than Lynx, but I honestly don't know and I'm happy to be corrected if anyone knows better.

One thing that I did find rather perturbing was this listing on Ebay:

Am I going daft or were there tinned drinks for children in the 60s labelled “shandy” and ‘lager and lime”?

The previously mentioned Bass shandy was legal to sell to children, anything with less than 0.5% alcohol is classified as a soft drink.

In the 1970s you could buy large bottles of shandy as a soft drink: it did contain beer although only about one or two per cent. It was sold at our school tuck shop until a new headmaster decided that even the small percentage of alcohol was too much and banned it. (The brand we had was Corona. Somehow I don’t think that name is likely to come back on soft drink bottles.)

Did some Googling, it was “Top Deck” shandy and lager & lime I was remembering. Found various references to the strength being 0.2%…
