The ones coming back from Wabtec don’t seem to be getting any touch ups.

then again I imagine getting as many sets operational is the priority currently, then working on their appearance later?

At some point between 1315 and 1745 today 91104 and 91108 have disappeared from their siding alongside the works at Doncaster.

91103 remains, and pilot 08853 was lurking suspiciously when I just passed on D21 with 91127.

Also 91109 appears to have arrived from Neville Hill for attention, sitting where 91105 was on Friday which I assume has gone back to Neville Hill.

Not neccasarily linked, but one of the Mark 4s that had been stripped for parts left Doncaster Wabtec by road today for scrap. Destination believed to be Booths in Rotherham.

I suspect 91109 needs some tlc - it was on the diagram to work last Wednesday's 1D30, which was cancelled due to "a problem with the train".

Around 15:30 the Thomas Hill pilot "Pammy" attached to the south end of 91104 + 91108, dragged them into the south end headshunt and then propelled them into the south end of the works somewhere, disappearing from view behind Denison House. (A flickr search for "Wabtec Pammy" brings up various pics of that pilot loco for anyone curious)

I found a good shot of 91104 / 91108 / 91103 in their previous position taken a few days ago: https://www.flickr.com/photos/the_walton_wanderer/51560515992/in/photostream/

There was a light engine movement at 10:40 from Doncaster West Yard to Neville Hill which must have been 91105 (it was still in Doncaster West Yard earlier in the morning).
The return working (12:20 Neville Hill - Doncaster West Yard) arrived at 13:00 with 91109 arriving light engine

15:05 Leeds > Kings Cross on Sunday 10th October produced 91110 ( yeah!)

I'm on the 08:30 London to Edinburgh service this Saturday (only as far as Peterborough) and just got an email from LNER saying that a different type will be operating this service (invalidating the seat reservations) so I assume this will be a 91/Mk 4 service

2x5 vice 1x9 or vice versa? Who would drive a Mk4 North of Newcastle.

It’s going via Carlisle, so AIUI cannot be a 91/mk 4 set.

The swap will have been either from a 9 car to 10 car 80x formation or vice versa. LNER sometimes use the same wording in emails to customers for those swaps as they do for 80x-Mark 4 swaps on the Leeds route.

Even of it was going normal route via Berwick it still wouldn't be a Mk4.
York remains the limit for them.

Yeah, they could word it specific to the actual change eg 9 to a 10 etc, then people clearly know what the email means.

That's what confused me.

Besides if it was a 9 to 2*5 swap (or vice versa), I don't see why the seat reservations couldn't be carried over, or comparable ones issued, rather than them being dumped altogether

They already do that sometimes, where they say “different type of Azuma” or something along those lines.

The two formations have little in common seating layout wise. A 9 car is formed A-B-C-G-H-J-K-L-M, whereas a 10 car is formed A-B-C-D-E-F-G-H-K-M. Of the coaches the exist on both formations, only coaches C, G and H have the same layout, coaches A (wheelchair space replaced by seats on a 10 car), B (Shop replaced by seats on a 9 car), K (different split of first-standard seating) and M (different size kitchens) have a different layout on the two formations.

different interior layouts. Pretty sure 5 car sets have shorter carriages but dont quote me on that

Why do they cancel all reservations when this happens, rather than just issuing new ones for the revised layout?

They can only do that if booked through lner.

Can't contact customers who booked via other websites or travel centres.

I booked my tickets through LNER
Which leaves the others where? With the way the sets are lettered, it's almost inevitable that they handle it like that rather than deal with a host of "you're in my seat/no I'm not" debates at every pick up point.

There's also the other side of it - when it's happened to me, I've been allowed to rebook on another train. That's got me on the train I wanted, but couldn't justify the extra £20 for...

They are doing a trial on selected trains where if alters they allocate u anther seat and email you.

But realistically it only works If they can contact all customers who book with other retailers.

It should be possible for LNER to notify other retailers of such changes for them to pass on to the customers. That said, especially once reservations from TVMs and Ticket Offices are taken into account where nobody has any contact details for the reservation holder, it's more hassle than it's worth and it's overall better to cancel reservations.

Near the end of HST operation on LNER one of the old HST diagrams converted to 800 operation a couple of weeks later than originally planned, and for those couple of weeks they tried allocating everyone a different seat on the new seating plan. It caused much more confusion for the majority of the passengers than simply cancelling the reservations would.

I understand Virgin EC wanted to try this, but some other retailers were not willing to play ball.

Back to class 91's and I was on 91101 (my last one!) on Tuesday 12 October 2021 from Doncaster to Wakefield Westgate. Train was 1D17 1403 Kings Cross to Leeds. We were on time from Doncaster and waited outside Wakefield for about 5 minutes then rolled into the platform. 91101 then failed in the platform, the signal reverted to red and the pantograph was dropped. The next 2 trains passed on the through line, and the Doncaster thunderbird (67028) was called to rescue the train which had by then been terminated. I couldn't find a path in RTT forward from Wakefield but I assume it is now on Neville Hill.

Personally I am glad I was at Doncaster to catch it, and not Wakefield! Anybody got any idea what caused it to fail?

Yes it went to Nevill Hill. Loco needs to go to Wabtec, so will be loco hauled with 91101 on a skate, sometime over weekend or early next week.

LNER must be notified by the retailers when a ticket is sold so that no-one reserves the same seat twice. In the interests of customer service you would think that they could work out a way of reissuing reservations and notifying everyone!
