Except that GWR are expecting to restore a much closer to normal level of service from Monday.

But to achieve that they need more trains from somewhere. You can't magically run an almost full service with 20+ fewer trains.

Hopefully 365s will find more work, but if they don't, the whole Networker fleet would likely be being withdrawn youngest to oldest in an odd sense, given the 365s are the youngest, the 465/466s are likely to go next, although no estimates yet on when, whereas the Turbos (165/166s) are the oldest and appear to be going for a while yet, especially given the talk of converting some to run on hydrogen power.

Class 165/166s are less tricky to redeploy when it comes to electro-magnetic compatibility.

I have just learned (from a Peterborough-based GTR driver) that the additional class 365 workings tomorrow (Saturday) have been cancelled. I wonder if this might be because there is no driver available who knows both Cambridge and 365s.

I'm assuming this means the out and back to Cambridge, but it might also mean the two trains up from Peterborough to London in the morning (although they have been worked by pairs of 365s on the last two Saturday mornings).

OK, I've now heard conflicting reports about this...

It may be that the word is being spread that the additional return trip to Cambridge tomorrow (Saturday) is cancelled is a ploy to keep the last workings low key and prevent overcrowding. Some people are saying that they are not cancelled, so it will be a case of watch RTT to see if the train from King's Cross to Cambridge runs.

The 08.11 and 09.10 from Peterborough are supposed to be 365s, whether or not the Cambridge trip runs.

Realised my mistake, I think the ex-1P83 ECS is not on RTT. But there is an ECS path for a 387 with the cambridge diagram reducing 12 to 8. Which is what wasn't adding up.
Will not derail the thread further!

Someone played around with things this morning.

Initially a 10:24 return working from KGX to PBO was shown, calling at Huntingdon only.

Then it changed to 10:54 to Cambridge calling at Stevenage and Royston (might be a couple of others, can’t remember!)

Then this was removed and replaced with an ECS working KGX to PBO at 10:48. This is what actually ran.

As much as I'd love to see them brought back to cover 387s sent west, I suspect their fate remains a one-way trip to Newport once they're back with Eversholt on 1 July. Probably one occasion where a comment of "what a waste" is entirely justified; they were fantastic units to travel on, and I bet Hornsey could have kept them going for a good 15 years yet.

Absolutely. It’s not like the 442s where they’re simply too problematic to keep running. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with the 365s at all, they are simply a victim of Covid, and the chaotic nature of recent rolling stock procurement.

The best hope is a quicker than expected mass return to the office. A nice dirt-cheap lease back to GTR, and use Electrostars to replace other older stuff, of which there’s two such GTR fleets south of the river.

It isn’t beyond the realms of possibility, as long as they survive long enough. With the uncertainty of passenger numbers I can’t see them being scrapped straight away, but who knows really.

Alternatively, who would have predicted the IEP issues, so who knows what the next couple of months could bring.
