Last orders at 10PM with an hour drinking up so marginally better but thats only in Tier 1 and 2 and in the latter you need have a substantial meal to be permitted to imbibe. So where back to wetherspoons and other chain pub eateries getting to open and the community pubs staying locked up.
I am thinking a few of my dwindling free houses do food. Lost on me because my missus is always cooking.

Unfortunately, this is what you get when you have a group of technocrats without the wisdom to understand that they don't have the answer for everything.

So we're none the wiser about a proposed trip to Scotland then. Have cancelled the Travelodge but still got train tickets, seems such a waste.
Well given that it is currently illegal to cross the border without good reason, you can probably cancel the trip...

We pretty much have cancelled, but I'm surprised that it's "illegal" to cross the border. Travelodge offered to change our booking from an Edinburgh hotel that is now closed to a nearby one, they would have our home address on our booking, yet never mentioned that we weren't actually allowed to travel there.

So none of today's updates apply to anywhere except England then presumably.

It will not be Travelodge's responsibility to enforce the law.

Was @trainophile 's post below but I have been beaten by it or have I beaten it.
Will these new tiers apply in N.I., Scotland and Wales, or will they be doing their own thing?
Thing is I thought I heard mention that there would be buy in from the other parts of the UK. But I picked up no detail and anyway if Bojo wants the others to be in tune it does not guarantee that they will want to be in tune with him.

I fully expect to see variations within tiers. It was not supposed to happen before but it did !.

Still I am hoping the tiers will be better (as in less bad) for the UK as a whole than a national lockdown.

How many people are actually going to check what applies to their area at any particular time and follow it? From the number of people out and about, I fully expect all these petty rules to be ignored so far as is possible by large numbers of people.

That will be the case.

I would have thought Nicola might consider the effect on tourism - lots of people will be reluctant to give Scotland any more of their money after this.

Looks like future holidays will be in the opposite direction, Devon is lovely and seems rather more welcoming.

Like nearly all UK (and indeed European) politicians, she now only seems to have a single concern - if it's not the virus, it doesn't matter

I've actually been wondering what politicians do now apart from dream up new rules. I'm not even sure I know what they base these rules on as they have no scientific background and yet speak like they know everything about it. Then if numbers go up they give us warnings. Must admit to having lost all patience with this as most of it is totally lacking in any scientific evidence at all.

Well you sadly won't be able to eat and drink in a pub in new tier 3 even if you try.
For me, new tier 2 is close to (but not quite) old tier 3, and new tier 1 is close to but not quite old tier 2.

If I have this right I can go to an indoor event with up to 1000 people in it which probably wont be serving a substantial meal but if I want to sit in a pub of no more than 20 in there even if it's on my own , I need to protect myself from Covid by ordering a pie and chips or a mixed grill with my beer.

Farcical isn't the word. Were politicians always this pathetic?

I’m sure if Devon had its own rules they would be as welcoming as Scotland in your eyes

I said back in July that I knew at least 10 people (myself included) who would not be holidaying in Scotland again - these are people who have gone there every year, in many cases more than once a year, for many years.

The number has now increased.

Who is that punishing?

The hospitality industry, as usual. The governments of the various parts of the UK like to introduce different petty rules, but they all seem united in shafting the hospitality industry,.

I see the slightly odious Dan Johnson of the BBC is out doing some essential journalism:

(The last time I noticed him on Twitter was when he was stalking someone for fare evasion!).

I do think the attitudes of those interviewed are interesting. Obviously by definition he isn’t interviewing anyone sat at home on the sofa, but people out and about seem to fall into one of two categories - the unconcerned, and hypocrites.

Whilst there is nominally a law in place in England stating one must not leave one’s home without a reasonable excuse, the list of reasonable excuses is so all-encompassing that it is pretty much ineffective. The only things it could even plausibly catch are going round your mates or going on a foreign holiday – and the former is caught by the gathering restrictions anyway.

As such, calling this a lockdown rather misses the point.

Yet it is lockdown enough to create substantial damage to the economy and the wider fabric of society.

It also seems to include a fair few people who have spotted the general inconsistency and cluelessness of Government policy.

While I agree with your point, the only differences in the law compared to the start of “Lockdown 1” are:

  • Visiting open air spaces for recreation as opposed to exercise
  • Meeting one friend outdoors
  • House viewings
  • Linked households for those living alone
I don’t think those additional permissions can fully explain the difference in the number of people out and about.

Edit: nearly forgot education which may be more significant in terms of movement than the above four put together. But that is clearly a red line for the public pretty much regardless of implications on spread or movement.

I believe you have missed some more exceptions, such as being permitted to travel to make takeaway purchases from cafés, restaurants, and bars, and click & collect purchases from retailers otherwise closed.
