From a royalist point of view, it’s a good job the line is delayed, as I’m sure the Queen is determined to stay alive long enough to open it. :D

The Victoria line goes to Victoria, though. There's no Central station but the Central does go to Central London...

The Jubilee kinda falls down, I'll give you that.
Julbilee Line is every bit as daft as Elizabeth Line.

Related to this but off topic, isn’t it a bit ambitious to be planning for the platinum anniversary 18 months out?

I can’t answer that, but we do seem to be running out of colours. What colour is platinum? I have absolutely no idea.

The Circle Line -> The Australian Snail Line.
Northern Line -> Southern Line.
Elizabeth Line -> the "This Isn't Part of The Underground" line.

I love the simplicity of Paris with numbers for Metro, letters for RER/Transilien and a T prefixed number for trams.

Personally I’d follow exactly the same system and have numbers for underground/Docklands, letters for overground/crossrail and T prefixed numbers for tramlink.

As TFK is currently broke perhaps we could add to this thread by suggesting renaming lines against possible sponsors. The rename could be in two stages

line sponsored by xxxxx then the sponsors name would take over. It would be best if you could think of a link between the lines name and the sponsor

For example: Northern Line sponsored by the Norwegian Tourist Board, Victoria line sponsored by Pimlico Plumbers

As I like the "rail enthusiast's" nickname, I think the Wimbledon to Edgware Road service should be separated out and actually called the Wimbleware Line :D

Bakerloo by Greggs.

Use the Berlin style system.
U x for each underground line and where there is a branch off, U xy.

Then use S for Crossrail, Thames link, London Overground, and any other suburban services

Julbilee Line is every bit as daft as Elizabeth Line.

The Elizabeth line is going to be pretty instantly "The Lizzy Line" or something similar ( "The Lizbef" if you're trying to give directions to out of towners ) - the other lines get away with it by being three syllables or less, I think. Mostly. The Picadilly is sorta 3 and a half with a local accent :)

I'd rename the Jubilee if I could think of something to rename it to. The Fleet line like it was meant to be called isn't exactly great either.

Egledon Line would be fun - sounds like an actual place!

It was a mistake calling it The Victoria Line. So many visitors to the UK confuse it with Victoria Station. Especially as so many of them them seem to be almost obsessed with Victoria for some reason.
One of the suggestions was the Viking Line, which would have been better..

Subject to issues with the length of the trains and platform lengths, I'd look into withdrawing the Hammersmith and City line and renaming the Circle Line, the Hammersmith and Circle Line. And look into extending maybe about 50% of Metropolitan line trains to Whitechapel or Barking.

Someone above mentioned newspapers....

Just to annoy Daily Mail readers, why not rename the Elizabeth Line the (Marcus) Rashford Line?

(meanwhile Express readers would likely want a Diana Line, Madeleine Line and Brexit Line...).

I guess Sun/Star/Daily Sport readers would want the whole thing renamed the Boob Tube.

I do like the sponsoring idea. But only if ridiculous sponsors are found. ‘This is an Old El Paso Victoria Line Train to Walthamstow. Tasty Tacos in two minutes!’ Or ‘This is a Femfresh Central Line train to Epping. Feel fresh in minutes!’

The Jubbly Line, in honour of London's famous son Del Boy.

A few years ago, I had a random idea for numbering the deep level "Tube" lines in a similar manner to how the US road network is numbered. North-south lines would be allocated odd numbers with 1 being the furthest east, and even numbers for east-west lines with 2 being the furthest north. Here's what I came up with:

Line 1 - Northern Line (Bank Branch)
Line 2 - Central Line
Line 3 - Bakerloo Line
Line 4 - Piccadilly Line
Line 5 - Northern Line (Charing Cross Branch)
Line 6 - Waterloo & City Line
Line 7 - Victoria Line
Line 8 - Jubilee Line

A coincidence I found with this plan is that with the exception of the W&C, the numerical order of above lines would be the same as the order they were constructed:

Line 1 - 1890
Line 2 - 1900
Line 3 - 1906
Line 4 - 1906
Line 5 - 1907
Line 6 - 1898 (the anomaly)
Line 7 - 1967
Line 8 - 1979

I also had a plan for a lettered system for sub-surface lines. Coincidentally believe it or not, three of these used to be operated using rolling stock which shared the same letter!

Line A - Metropolitan Line
Line B - Hammersmith & City Line
Line C - Circle Line
Line D - District Line
Line E - East London Line
This, but:
  • merge H&C and Circle
  • remove ELL
  • add LO as "Line O"
  • add TL as "Line T"
  • add XR as "Line X"

That's one way to claw back the funding needed to keep TfL buoyant.

"This is a Just Eat Bakerloo Line service."

"This a Right Guard Central Line service to Epping. Because without a good deodorant, after 30 minutes on the 92 stock you'll be hot and smelly"

I would leave Bakerloo as is and follow the same idea for the rest. e.g.:

Central > Liversway
Victoria > Finslico
Metropolitan > Wemblate
Piccadilly > Piccadonian
Northern > Golderswood
District > Wimpsminster
Jubilee > Swisswater
H&C > Hammerking
Circle > Edgwedgw (for Welsh speakers only)
W&C > oops - better left alone!

:E

The family friendly option would be to swap it around to "City and Waterloo" which would then become Coo!

Coincidentally, my LinkedIn feed today has been full of photos of the station totems around the Playstation offices, where the roundel has been replaced with a cross, triangle or square. Wonder how much they paid for that (quite good) stunt?

They did a few stations today, but Oxford Circus was probably the best - especially with the Microsoft store there.

I’d merge the Hammersmith & City and Circle lines into the Hammersmith & Circle line, the Circle line hasn’t been a Circle for years and the H&C line could be interchangeable between the Metropolitan line and District line.

It used to be the case that the PIS on the C-stock talked of the "Circle and Hammersmith" as a line, even though it never existed. I think that reads better and describes it fairly well.
