Having worked shifts for several years, the Bolton curfew will be like a kick in the teeth for emergency workers like the police, ambulance, carers, who don't always have time to nip back to their respective workplaces for that vital brew at 3am.

A McD's coffee was always welcome at the witching hour, then at least you could put it in your centre console if you were travelling between jobs. I generally took sandwiches into work but I did enjoy treating myself to a kebab on my last night shift - sadly that will be impossible now for many people working in Bolton.

Maybe the "thinking" is that after 10 p.m. the folk (that are still out and about) are more likely to be no longer observing social distancing, possibly due to increasing levels of inebriation.

Still an arbitrary cut-off time though, just like the 4.00 a.m. one for international travellers.

Fair point, and I can see where they are coming from but surely they arent that naive that they think everyone out of their homes after 10pm is drunk!

Whilst some would grumble about it, it seems more proportionate and would inconvenience less people (night shift/emergency workers). But of course, there is no room for such sense in the world at the moment

I don't know about elsewhere, but most take-outs in my area don't sell alcohol so a ban on it's sale wouldn't help their opening late on. Moreover, if pubs are shut after 10pm then many would not have much incentive to remain open much beyond that time.

It's all about the young. They are hanging around in groups, like they do, and taking the disease home with them. That was the problem widely acknowledged in Blackburn before their enhanced restrictions. So it is not necessarily alcohol related.

If you close all avenues of social interaction at a certain time, people will get bored and go home pretty soon afterwards. Adults with their own homes may take a few friends with them to continue the party. Young people still at home will not have that option.

Why that specific time was chosen, who knows. If the disease spreads through social interaction, it does at any time people are doing that interaction. I can only guess that the idea is to allow people with a 'normal' working day some limited social life.

Are take-aways able to do delivery after the curfew time? What is the number of your park bench sir? Please flash a torch at the Deliveroo bike when you see him nearby. Oh, you're at lampost no 27. Why that's just a couple of doors down the street, wait there and we'll deliver in person in 5 minutes.

Lets be honest, the hugging when they meet and disperse is not necessary. Could the schools and colleges simply tell them not to do it as they tell them the rules on masks.

That's a charming level of belief in the power of schools and colleges to control their students

"Chewing Gum is not allowed" only has the effect of making pupils actively want to chew gum to disobey the rule.

At this point, we really ought to just let young people and adolescents have normal existances as far as practicable, within reason.

I do agree with you. It was just the over the top hugging that i thought could go by the wayside for the time being. When i went to school we got by without it.

I do agree with you. It was just the over the top hugging that i thought could go by the wayside for the time being. When i went to school we got by without it.

Hugging is very much a "thing" between friends nowadays. Not between two boys mind (not that there's anything fundamentally wrong with that, of course).

IME it is between two lads as well, not only if they're gay. I remember first noticing it in the millennial generation and more a Southern than Northern thing - it very much wasn't the culture when I was growing up (Gen-X in the North West) - you only hugged family or your partner - but it very much is now.

Yes, lads do it regardless of their preferences. I still think people could get by without it though.

I'm sure they could indeed (we managed it when I was younger, it just wasn't a thing), the question is if they will - teenagers are not world-renowned for doing as they are told.

I thought you meant into Bolton for a bit then, then I wondered why anyone would go to Bolton?

(Actually when I was a kid we used to go to the Water Place on the train as it was the nearest "fun pool" with slides etc to us - but I believe that's long gone)

Went as long ago as 26th October 2002. The site is now Morrison's Petrol station.

The rest of the town followed soon afterwards.

Yes, it and the adjacent Morrisons were/are on what was the site of Great Moor Street station.

Looks like Birmingham will now be added to the list of locations in the UK under a 'local lockdown' from Tuesday.

Coronavirus: Birmingham lockdown restrictions increased

Households in the city and nearby Sandwell and Solihull are banned from mixing as cases rise.

Households in Birmingham have been banned from mixing in new lockdown measures announced following a spike in coronavirus cases.

The city now has the second highest rate of Covid-19 infection in England, behind Bolton.

The measures also cover neighbouring Sandwell and Solihull, affecting more than 1.6 million people in total.

The restrictions will begin on Tuesday, it was announced at a regional meeting of council leaders.

West Midlands mayor Andy Street said: "The areas will now be escalated to an area of national intervention, with a ban on people socialising with people outside their own household."

The restrictions were not about "prevention of schools, workplaces, transport" but about mixing of households, he said.

The same article also makes reference to the possibility of even more locations being placed under similar 'lockdown' conditions.

Mr Street said a government announcement on further measures, potentially affecting other areas of the country, would be made later.

I live in the affected area, with the border between Birmingham and Sandwell running down the street where I live.

I wonder how the councils and the police are going to enforce this.

I suspect they are going to rely largely on voluntary compliance, as there is no way they can monitor every private house.

Pubs and restaurants are remaining open although they will have to be strict about groups of people meeting up who obviously don't live together.
