The original plan was for all drivers who work on 5 November to take one home for the bonfire. However, due to the implementation of the railways standard unforeseen delay mechanism this was changed to 24 December for elf'n safety reasons for use when Santa alights from his sleigh. Further delays mean that they now are being sold to make Easter egg boxes. Dependent on the outcome of the Election this may be changed again as they will be need to provide tinder if the Strategic Reserve locos are found on the re-opening of the Woodhead Tunnel

I'd heard a rumour that the 142s were all to be placed into the disused bore (not the emergency access one) of Standedge tunnel, as the original "strategic reserve" locos in Box tunnel have all rusted away...

Stored unserviceable
Stored serviceable
And lists readily available in magazines now it’s like pulling teeth getting franchises to admit to anything it’s hardly going to affect national security whether a 142 is serviceable or not .

Stored serviceable
And lists readily available in magazines now it’s like pulling teeth getting franchises to admit to anything it’s hardly going to affect national security whether a 142 is serviceable or not .

That was one organisation and a list that was in a monthly magazine, which may or may not have been updated in a timely manner. That’s a world away from today with an internet enabled enthusiast population that seems to want real time updating, and then no doubt will ask why we can’t know which units are working which diagrams.

Maybe TOCs don’t see the value in providing such a service.

I would have thought with the leaf season nearing the end and new units entering service Pacer withdrawal may accelerate shortly.

And considering how many diagrams pacers are still being used for and how frequent the warm storage units do get out, then I do find it hard to believe there will just be only 11 142s in service next year. They may put quite a few in warm storage also and use them on a rotational basis.

Of course any severe winter weather may also delay any full on withdrawals also.

I’m sticking with the prediction I made back in September when they were still claiming they would withdraw all the 142s:

With a little over 3 months left of the year, and an impressive 1 Pacer withdrawn, it is time to start thinking about how many Northern 142s will be keeping the already confirmed 144s company in service next year.

I'll start the bidding at between 35 and 50, or if pressed for a specific number I'll go for 40.

If anything I’m tempted to revise it upwards.

I had 142066/142096 on the 2222 Newcastle to Darlington on 16 November so I assume that was when they re-entered traffic but I have lost track of 096 since.

142096 was at Newcastle on Saturday 23/11. I can't remember which diagram, possibly the 0941 to Middlesbrough/Nunthorpe.

if I were them I'd make at least one of them a 2-car service [ideally a pacer, even if temporarily] on weekdays aswell, as atm the only time that service gets a pacer is on Saturdays!

I believe from the Dec timetable the Leeds to Huddersfield via Bradford and Halifax has been cut back to a Bradford to Huddersfield. I'm sure a one car unit will surfice as it's quicker by bus.
Low moor to Leeds passengers have been catered for by stopping the Leeds Chester services.

Apparently 142044 has now been fully withdrawn from so 2 down, another 77(?) to go...

Also any news on the comment about 3 units apparently will be heading down from Heaton to Worksop in a move I assume for scrapping? Or is it just more Facebook nonsense being talked about?

It's shortformed due to unit availability. It's been shuttling back and forth between leeds and Hudds all day, saw it at 07:36 passing through Low Moor.
I'm on it now and the guard's apologising profusely.
