Also, due to extra height of a MK3 carriages compared to that on a unit
It's not just the height, it's the way that the step tapers away at the carriage end.

The other day someone showed me a photo of a classic HST door at the notoriously low Dunkeld platform - I knew it was bad on a 170 but oh my God, even an Olympic gymnast would have to think twice about that one. That station seriously needs sorting out ASAP as soon as they know what's happening with the A9, it's an even bigger disgrace than ever with an HST service.

Not that easy - big issues to sort out Dunkeld - the building is listed - the footbridge is listed - all which have an interface with the problem platforms making alterations extremely difficult!

Indeed, I've used an HST at Dunkeld before (off the southbound Chieftain and onto a northbound Scotrail HST so got to try both platforms) and they were so low it was comical. Great fun though, just brought the child out in me leaping up into the vestibule from the platform.

Regarding trying to get the refurbished sets from Wabtec to Edinburgh, could a LNER driver do that being as they are familiar with the traction type?

This is of course assuming that LNER have enough drivers and ones who are willing to do a few hours overtime.
Of course not, they will likely be delivered as planned, not to suit those on Rail Forums!

Why not just lower the track? Can be as cheap as raising a platform sometimes.

As long as the platform foundations are strongly built enough to handle the removal of support.
...and there aren't any underbridges nearby. It looks as though there is one at the west end of Dunkeld station which might complicate things.

You are right. "Fiasco" is a good description of this project. At least the Fyra trains actually arrived at some point.

For factual accuracy, can we understand the following (correct me please if I am wrong):

  • Three refurbished HSTs, of 27, have been delivered.
  • One is in daily service.
  • Set's two and three have carried no passengers (?)
  • Set four is "ready" but unable to depart due to lack of paths/lack of drivers/it doesn't work properly.
  • Set five is "imminent".... as of 1st May.
  • There are 22 sets to be delivered by 31st December this year.....

Around 12 sets have been stripped already.

Seems to be having a long PNB at Drem! Seems an odd place to swap crew.

RTT suggests it arrived 134 minutes early at Drem Passenger loops. Left on time by the looks of it.

Or if it was a driver change then maybe the new driver arrived on time rather than 2 hrs early?

Good place to swap a freight driver who signs the east coast route for a Scotrail driver who signs North Berwick and the Scotrail depot it was ending up at

True. But it had 40 minutes at Millerhill, and I'd expect most ECML north freight drivers would sign Millerhill, no?

I take it having 170’s on the 7cities routes are due to training and not lack of HST’s?

Correct me if I am wrong but do we now have refurb and classic sets available for training at all depots ?

Should mean that crew training should complete much more quickly and the 170’s can go back to their original planned routes (is that fife circle and borders ?)....which in turn means less cancellations and short forms?
