Presumably the electrification focus is on the northern, commuter sections of the line?
Absolutely, I was just trying to help a few people who were trying to remember what had happened with singling, or otherwise, of the route overall.

Last week or so ive used Stirling to Glasgow stopper on 170 and Falkirk Grahamston to Edinburgh 170 . Maybe im now used to the EMUs but i found on both of these services the top speed quite slow . Do the 170s work to 75mph times ?

They do feel incredibly slow, but don't forget the same 170s that do Stirling-Glasgow in 44 minutes do Glasgow to Stirling in 26 minutes.

Sometimes the speed of the journey is down to pathing more than capability.

I think i was too used to them on the E and G going faster , almost felt if they were de rated . Suprised to see the ex nat express purple interior still exists .

Those services are timed as class 150/153/155/156, 75mph. The Fife and Shotts trains that are 158/170 operated are the same. The Aberdeens are timed as class 158, 100mph (yep, I know that’s impossible)

I think Edinburgh-Dunblane services are timed for 90mph

It must have been. I think I saw some tweets indicating that the fixings wre complete and wiring was progressing. It looks like your updates are coming to an end, just wish there was a follow-on project.

Indeed, looks like someone has dropped the ball or there is a problem with the new project initiation process. Alternatively, are Transport Scotland changing direction? The statement in parliament regarding East Kilbride avoided mentioning electrification specifically.

I don't usually have much sympathy with the scogov but virtually all their finance, both current expenditure and capital, is controlled by Westminster. When the Chancellor sits down tomorrow, Holyrood will know how much it has to spend/invest.

I think an MSP should ask the minister to congratulate NR on the completion of both projects, and and, since it would be desirable to keep these experienced together, to give a confirmed date for the start of the next project.

Personally, they should start with the SouthSub, as it more or less OHLE cleared.

The Edinburgh sub still has a number of structures, particularly around some of the old stations which were clear for the container traffic due to being flat decks but will not be OLE compliant and given the locations will be both costly and disruptive to solve. I suspect that OLE on the sub will be a long while yet in coming.

I have to disagree - East Kilbride, Barrhead and Kilmarnock offers much more direct passenger benefit.

True, but it's something that is in a condition where the specialised electrification work could get going fairly quickly. The skills gained on Shotts/SDA will find other employment if there's no work for them.

As far as I know there isn't any scheme sitting with design done sufficient for the Shotts/SDA teams to be on the ground without a significant pause. Believe that the idea of transferring at least some of the staff temporarily onto maintenance has been looked at to retain the specialised skills.

I know the letting of contracts for the construction phases of electrification schemes are announced with great fanfare but is the same true of the design phase? I possibly just missed it but Cumbernauld and Paisley Canal seemed to mobilise fairly quickly suggesting the designs were sufficiently mature. It's possibly grasping at straws but is there an overarching contract covering design working away in the background in support of the rolling programme of electrification?

It generally isn't true for design, because design is largely done in house and therefore no contracts are let.

Scottish Wiring Progressometer - Post 9.0 (dated 29th October 2018)
Shotts (due March 2019)

All mileages taken from Holytown Jct (1m 24ch) to Midcalder Jct (23m 11ch).
New signalling system for the route tested & commissioned.
The "treat as LIVE" date for the Shotts Line (eastern section) has been set as the 4th of November; the ORR are due to sign the route off for electric traction near Christmas.

Holytown Jct (1m 24ch) to Midcalder Jct (23m 11ch)
Fully wired west and east of the Carfin-Cleland Cutting on both lines. Bespoke masts are being/have been installed in the Carfin-Cleland Cutting.

Platforms are being extended at Carfin.
At Cleland, CCTV cameras & CIS are being installed.
At Hartwood Station (6m 62ch), an entirely new DDA-compliant access route is being built, to allow removal of the old footbridge without the need for a replacement. CCTV/CIS improvements are also underway at the station.
The accommodation bridge at Hartwoodhill looks finished.
At Shotts station, Station Rd Bridge is being rebuilt, and platforms are being extended.
At Fauldhouse Station, CCTV and CIS screens are being installed/improved.
Breich Station reopened after a 12-week closure. Platforms have been reprofiled, with access to the eastbound platform now coming from the north, avoiding the need for a new footbridge.
Addiewell Station's old footbridge has gone, and the New Footbridge almost complete. CIS screens and CCTV cameras are also being installed.

Edinburgh-Falkirk-Glasgow
All mileages taken from Queen Street High Level (0m 00ch) towards Haymarket (46m 02ch).
Electric services (Class 380s) running between Glasgow Queen Street High Level & Edinburgh Waverley via Falkirk High (21m 63ch) in regular service; due to switch to Class 385 operation in December '18.

Via Falkirk Grahamston - LIVE as of 1/5/18. This includes
  • Greenhill Upper Jct to Greenhill Lower Jct;
  • Greenhill Lower Jct to Polmont Jct via Falkirk Grahamston;
  • Grangemouth Jct;
  • The "Larbert Triangle" (Larbert Jct, Carmuirs West Jct, and Carmuirs East Jct).
Now signed off for passenger service; Class 365s in operation as of 23/6/18.
Wires up and live as far north as Larbert Jct (but no further); SPS-bearing portals extend a short way north from Larbert Jct., along with a short run of catenary wire.
Steelwork is also up in the Grangemouth Terminal area, however the extent of SPS & wiring there is not yet known. Wires are now largely up in the vicinity of Fouldubs Jct, but work has yet to be completed with snagging etc.

Larbert - Stirling - Dunblane/Alloa - Fully Wired as of 22/10/18
Line blockade from 14/10 to 21/10 (inclusive) for wiring between Dunblane/Alloa and Larbert is now complete.
The "treat as LIVE" date for SDA has been set as the 4th of November; the ORR are due to sign the route off for electric traction near Christmas.
At Larbert, both main lines and the Down Passenger Loop are fully wired.
Wires extend north from Larbert to Stirling over both lines; all lines are fully wired within Stirling.
Wires extend north from Stirling, through Bridge of Allan, and through Kippenross Tunnel to Dunblane (where all tracks are also wired to the Limit of Wiring); the Alloa Branch is also fully wired.
New LED Signals at Stirling North have been commissioned.
Registration work may still need to be done at a few locations, and the feeder station at Stirling is not yet ready.

Glossary of Terms
SPS - Small Part Steelwork; the "dangly bits" that hang off the masts e.g. registration arms.
TTC - Twin Track Cantilever; the "gallows" style masts with 2 sets of small part steelwork on it.
CIS - Customer Information Screen; the "dot matrix" displays shown on most modern stations.

As far as I was aware, design is done by external consulants. There certainly isn't an in house team in Network Rail to take it all the way through design for large schemes like that in Scotland.
