I am a young trainspotter and was wondering how you get the information about what train is what number and if there are any websites that could tell me that, or if a train headcode indicates what class the train is or will be?

There isn't anything that lists unit allocations, as this is only for internal railway staff, but sites such as Real Time Trains list all headcodes of services and live running information.

Further to Dan's reply above, there are moves afoot to force the industry to improve the 'openness and transparency'
of rail data, at least on the passenger side of things, including clamping down on the practice of FOCs claiming that
all rolling stock data is 'commercially sensitive' when the vast majority most of it simply isn't!
Until that happens, we have to rely on people who work on the railway posting the data on sites like this one.

I think TOPS may be wrong for this one. I've just had a look through my notes and 43093 was paired with 43161 on the 10:03 Paddington-Penzance on Saturday (confirmed by sight, and travelled on). That service does form the 15:52 back so it probably wasn't 063 on the rear?

Can anyone confirm please if the returning UKR Railtour from Edinburgh Tattoo that left Edinburgh around 10.38 this morning back to London KX is made up of 90029 and 67015?
