If memory serves, I think Cameron DID say he would be resigning - nothing to do with Brexit per se, just that he wasn't gonna complete a full term. He never gave a solid date, so going straight after the ref, to coin a phrase, respects the original decision to resign!

I'm pretty sure originally he said he would do a full term but there were calls from others in the party to let someone take over earlier, rather than having a new leader just before a General Election.

Mostly Glasgow-ish. Mostly.

He suggested before the 2015 general election that if he won it that he'd only serve until the subsequent election in 2020.

In that case would have gone before the 2020 to allow a new PM time to bed in (and possibly to avoid a leadership challenge well before!)?

About kilometers in the USA from Wiki:
I-19 is unique among US Interstates, because signed distances are given in meters (hundreds or thousands as distance-to-exit indications) or kilometers (as distance-to-destination indications), and not miles. However, the speed limit signs give speeds in miles per hour. According to the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT), metric signs were originally placed because of the push toward the metric system in the United States at the time of the original construction of the highway.

The only people who seem surprised the negotiations are going badly are the leavers. Why are they in the slightest bit surprised. We opted to leave one of the biggest trading blocks in the world, they aren't going to make it easy for us as it is going to weaken them, less than it will us of course. I am sick to death of leavers saying we should stick with them to make the best of it. It's like asking me to buy a p*ss head uncle a pint to help him on his way. You voted for this mess, you sort it out. Am sure you will all be fine now you have real life Alan B'stard as Brexit secretary. Perhaps you want to look at what he has in mind once we are out of the EU.

Tory vice chairs quit over Brexit
Two vice chairs of the Conservative Party, Maria Caulfield and Ben Bradley, are quitting their posts in protest at Theresa May's Chequers Brexit compromise plan.

Both have warned they will lose their seats unless the Tories deliver Brexit.

Ms Caulfield supported Leave in the EU referendum, and Mr Bradley backed Remain.

Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson and Brexit Secretary David Davis have already quit.

From Ben Bradley on Thursday:

Whilst everyone gets very excited about Chequers tomorrow, truth is PM has been consistent with her #Brexit wishlist from day one - control of money, borders and laws. We should support her, get behind her and deliver precisely those things!

It’s a disaster.

We’ve been sold down the river by a weak government, and an even weaker PM, who couldn’t negotiate their way out of a wet paper bag. I (almost) wish we had remained!

I actually hope a GE is called, and Corbyn gets into power - this country deserves it, frankly.

If Corbyn and his Marxists get into power, you'll soon be calling for another General Election. But who left to vote for ?

70% of the Labour membership voted to Remain so unless some more leavers start joining the party they'll be a conflict of interest with Labour delivering anything but the softest possible Brexit.

Nope - I say let them in. Although, I might sell my property...

I wish I could reincarnate my relatives - my grandfather who flew night fighters in WW2. + Another distant relative who took a bullet in the head on the Somme.

Stand down lads - no need for your bravery - we are giving the keys to Germany anyway + as white heterosexual males your kind isn’t wanted in 2018 with our #metoo generation...

Where’s Jeremey? More importantly, where’s my £100k for 2 days per week as an ASLEF member? ;)

I must say I’m very disappointed with Theresa May, she really has proved royally useless. Seems like she is the classic case of someone who wanted to by PM at all cost, with no idea what she actually wanted to do when there, and got there simply by being “none of the above”.

I’d say this lack of leadership talent is the biggest problem facing our country at the monent, and the current Brexit debacle is just one manifestation of that. It’s hard to think of ONE single policy domestic that May has implemented since taking over, nor think of ONE reason to want to vote Conservative apart from “they’re not Labour” or “Stop a Corbyn”.

But, Labour is no better, but for different reasons. Plenty of policies, but a gerestric freak surrounded by similar freaks, pursuing policies proven to have failed in the past.

We really could do with Portillo at the moment.

THIS Micheal Portillo?
https://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/9...K-EU-Theresa-May-soft-Brexit-Michael-Portillo

Speaking on BBC This Week, Mr Portillo said that a version of soft-Brexit outcome will be the likely result of the ongoing negotiations between the UK and Brussels.
BBC host Andrew Neil pointed out that there appears to be little desire for hard-Brexit among the largely remain backing House of Commmons,
But Mr Portillo said that the division in Theresa May's cabinet on the issue is purely coincidental and that a soft-Brexit will be dictated by the growing globalisation of other countries outside of Europe.
I'll go with that.

How on earth can anyone say the young were barely engaged? I can understand the point about voting age (although I disagree with it), but lack of engagement?

Is this the same young who we've been told have become re-engaged with politics and were apparently so important in Jeremy Corbyn's leadership elections which have happened at the same time? How does that work then?

If you don't vote, your opinion doesn't count. Harsh? Perhaps, but it's how it works.

I feel a bit bad for May. She has to deliver something utterly ridiculous to a load of people who will never agree about what they wanted and at the same time try not to f*ck the country which is hard to avoid.

Where do you get that figure from? I'm a Labour party member and don't remember ever having to declare how I voted.

Opinion polling? I'd have hoped the past few years would have completely discredited those.

I'm bored of saying it, but you cannot extrapolate from "statistics" like that what the supporters of a party think or will do.

I've had a vote in every Labour leadership election since the 90s through union membership. Most voters aren't a member of the party they support, and I'd ignore any "stats" based on polling Labour members given so many of them are bargain basement ones who only joined with the give-us-50p-and-you-can-vote-for-corbyn special offer.

(I voted for Corbyn in both his elections)

Labour will not adopt an anti-Brexit stance. It's not a party political issue, no matter how many people seem to think it is.

The problems been the Brexiteers in her own party, squabbling, being unrealistic and using Brexit as a political game (aka Boris Johnson)

I disagree, as much as I think they've been utterly useless I can't think of any significant public squabbles, until now. What has been a farce though is it seeming like no one has been in charge. If you create a ministry to deal with leaving, the minister in charge of it should be the public face of negotiations. It feels like that wasn't allowed.

Shared by a Labour MP on Twitter.

So you go to Labour party meetings and don't say your pro-Brexit even though you post it on here? Or did you just join Labour to vote for a certain person as leader?

The YouGov poll made an accurate prediction for the 2017 General Election result, while exit polls have been found to be very accurate. A proper poll can be very accurate but there's too many media publications wanting polls done quickly and cheaply which give strange results.

It clearly was for some. Difficult to know how many because few would openly admit it. Sometimes though, their guard is let down for all to see. :)

Loving the liberal remainers claiming Michael Portillo and Kenneth Clarke for their cause and thinking they'd ever be anything other than Conservative. They clearly don't remember the 80s

The remain world really is joyless.

It is, but don’t forget that 17 million people voted to stick the middle finger up at them and won. That’s all it was ever about. A big F*** You.

Everyone who voted Remain who is wrestling with the constitutional crisis we find ourselves in, should reflect on the fact they got told to fornicate themselves by their countrymen.

If Remainers were a lot less condescending and superior, we wouldn’t be in this mess.

This thread is an exemplary piece of evidence of how dislikeable Remain were, even though I was a Remain voter. I know which of the two sides I would rather have a pint with.

The thing is that, courtesy of a certain Mrs Miller, Britain is locked onto a default trajectory out of the EU as authority from Parliament would be required to deviate from the Article 50 declaration. Many MPs in leave constituencies do not wish to be seen as obstructing Brexit by supporting the grant of authority to change, and would likely remain neutral if a motion allowing for it was passed. If no deal is agreed, it will damage the EU much more and for a much longer period of time - something that Monsieurs Barnier, Verhofstadt, Juncker, Tusk et al. do not fully appreciate it.

If a deal was to be voted down in Parliament, it would then become a no-deal situation. Although I would like to think that a minimal skeleton arrangement would be put in place so that no-one gets kicked out of the country where they live. As a leave voter, that would suit me.
