The doors are only a part of the debate - so far to date except for on HS1 South Eastern services the moves to DOO have resulted in the staff being stripped of all operational authority, training and responsibilities.
Consequently the OBS staff have no authority to require the driver to stop the train for any reason as a guard does, no route knowledge to respond to operational or medical issues and so on.
As a guard I can't adequately put into words how disinterested I am in effectively becoming a passenger checking tickets on my own train.
Even if you take the doors away I wish to remain in charge of the train when on board it and know I have the authority to make decisions effectively.
